New X-Com game coming out. By Firaxis!

New X-Com game coming out, not the crappy first person shooter one but a real authentic x-com game!

It's going to actually be a turn based strategy game like the old ones were!

Who else would be looking forward to this. I honestly didn't play the game until my hubby introduced it to me and even in that old, old game the atmosphere is downright creepy!

Edit: They removed the info from their main page and placed in on its own webpage now. Looks like one hand doesn't know what the other is doing at Firaxis. Oh well, as long as they stay fairly true to the original.

I'll definitely be playing it. They have big shoes to fill with how much I loved the classic, but we'll see

I had no desire to get this game.  I tried to play the original but without a manual, I was lost.  I was also too lazy to look up a manual...

Anyways, I downloaded the demo.  I purchased it immediately after.  I LOVE turn-based tactic games.

Watching a gameplay video right now. It's so beautiful.*wipes a tear*
I can't believe the old X-Com game now looks like this.

The whole thing reminds of how Katauri took the old King's Bounty game, added a snowload of abilities, improved the visuals and created an instant classic.
If it's going to be something along those lines, I'm already in love with the game.

I preordered it as soon as I saw it on Steam as the XCOM series is one of my favorite. It comes out the 9th in the US.

There is another xcom remake game (Xenonauts) in the works by an independent developer called with the beta coming out about the same time as the XCOM from 2k. Like most (but not all) independent games the graphics are "subpar" compared to the big guys.

got it yesterday. It is considerably dumbed down than the original when I first touched it. Still, the guys at firaxis seemed to know what they're doing, and it looks like quality game right now.

Been playing it for 8 straight hours today... I wonder how much time it takes before the aliens blew me to tiny bits, like in the original game...

Started playing yesterday... got 20 hours played already, on manmode, impossible.

Anyways, I'm a big fan of the old X-COM and I've played the Original and UFO Defence quite vigorously. I have been very exited and anxious about this game for quite some time, expecting it to be very much dumbed down and have losts it roots. Well... it certainly is "dumbed down", but I completely see why, and in a way I hardly miss moving every single guy one step at a time, just in case there's an alien over there, and then ending my turn when I have half my action points left to not enter their view without having at least a snap shot left. In the same way I hardly miss recruiting 20 soldiers only to fire 15 of them as soon as I have a look at them or equipping soldier poorly and putting them in exposed positions, just to practice their reaction value and accuracy and I especially don't miss that cyberdisc on the first terror mission on one play through, that on the first round went up the ramp on my ship and died to reaction fire, and of course exploded all over my dudes, leaving but the two furthest into it alive.
A lot of the old XCOMs was just about exploiting the game mechanics to optimize the progression of your recruits, and even though I don't really miss it in one way, I totally miss it. When you had a twelve man squad and you had to transfer that one item to that one guy and had them throw it to them, every time hoping that they wouldn't miss, because it was such a hurry. Knowing that if that item didn't arrive, your guy could die, and you'd have to hire another 20 and work for an hour just to get a decent dude... But I totally see why they slimmed it down, streamlined it. The new one is a lot of fun and it's not as tedious as the old one. I can see myself coming home from work or school and just taking a seat by the computer and enjoying myself. It's not necessarily a project to work on for weeks. I often think that I should replay the old games and try the ones I haven't played through entirely, but... I usually feel like I don't want to get into that huge time investment to do it properly.

There are however some things that I think are just plain better in the old ones. First off, the fear. The old games scared me, with that music, with the slow plasma shots coming from nowhere, going straight towards your best soldier, oh so slowly. Oh! And the utter panic when you see the first blaster launcher of the playthrough! How I almost scream when it happens and often take a few minutes break, looking at the battlefield several times before deciding what to do. That and the maps are a lot more straight forward. Especially the terror mission and the large space ships aren't huge, complex maps to navigate, long missions taking a couple of hours at times. And the menus are a bit wonky at times, and there are some bugs and glitches (yeah, I expect most of it to be patched out within a month or two).

Besides, the game is still kind of ruthless. My assault guys in heavy armour can just barely survive one good plasma shot and less sturdy guys will go down in one. So far I've made three bad mistakes, and they have all resulted in some pretty bad stuff. The first one was when I hid one of my guys behind a car, whereupon it exploded. Well, well. I didn't know that they did that, so I don't blame myself. The second time was when I was a bit greedy. I have eight main guys with plenty of experience and equipment for them. This means I can have two guys out and still have a full squad. One time I had two guys injured and two guys in psi training. I took a couple of squaddies in and one of them, of course, died. Well, I don't really care about the squaddie, but it would've been cool to play through without any soldiers dying to actual battle. The third one... made me facedesk hard and curse. My two stunrod guys were out, and I forgot to get one for the squad I sent out to a story mission. Jeesh, I'm dumb. Also China got mad at me, but that wasn't really my fault, the circumstances considering, but apart from those I feel like I've been playing without making any real mistakes outside of some small missteps in battle. So all my mistakes have screwed me over, and now the enemies are getting tougher too. My troops are keeping up fairly well, but I have almost no upgrades and my interceptors are too weak and I don't have any reserves. If these guys die I'm completely screwed. My Mane Squad is what I put my hopes to. Anyways, I think I'm quite close to the end of the game, and I'll save it for tomorrow. I'll probably need time and bit of sleep for it.

All in all, this game is a lot more pure fun than the old ones, with all the good and just some of the bad that comes with it. It may not be exactly what I wanted, but it certainly will do and I feel like it is a worthy successor. Besides, this just means that I have an actual XCOM game that I can throw at people and actually expect them to play more than ten minutes.

So just two comments after the release? Come on, this is not some underground indie game but a sequel of well-known title (among the older gen at least). I'll add my bit shortly.

Been playing it for a while now and I absolutely love it. It's got the basic idea of the originals but flows much faster and to my taste more enjoyable.

Edit: Just finished it on Normal. Will probably go straight away for a second playthrough on Classic. My biggest and possibly only beef with the game is that it's shorter than I expected and wanted.

Finally got around to starting the game.  Really mostly just through the tutorial to get used to the controls and such. I'll be restarting so I can build the base my way.

I've been having fun though I can't say I like the whole enemy dropping troops out of the sky thing. At first I thought it was just the Thin Men who did that, then I did a mission involving doing stuff on a [stationary] train and more troops dropped from the sky.  Bleh.

So any tips for building the different classes?  It looks like with the limited inventory the Support Class will always need to take the ability to use a medikit 3x instead of one time. I like the Assault class being able to sprint and still shoot his shotgun at the end.

Oh, I love the customization of the soldiers too. I give my soldiers different colored armor based on their class so it is easy to see at a glance who is what class.

For me the tactical combat is dumbed down too much. The levels are small and narrow, so most of the time you do a frontal assault with some minor flanking. After 10 combats it gets dull.

About the classes: snipers can be so freaking awesome. My best soldier was a sniper and by the time I maxxed him out and gave him the best gun he could devastate anything... twice in one turn.
