Magic: The Gathering Strategy and Discussion
Well, it may be a little late, but Morningtide's preview cards are flowing in on Wizards. So, what you think of them so far? I believe Morningtide will follow up Lorwyn nicely and close the first two set block for a long time rather well.
Cards Looking Forward to:
-Oona
-Any Treefolk or Merfolk.
-PLANESWALKERS!!!

Yeah, Colfenor will most definitely make an appearance. Wizards said that Oona MIGHT make an appearance. I hope so.

I've heard rumors that Oona is actually Liliana Vess in disguise. Also, apparently the storyline more or less rules out Colfenor's appearance. Either way, I'm pretty sure we'll have some fun champion shenanigans, like enchantments or artifacts with the ability, or spells that champion more than one permanent.
Also, the coming of Morningtide will likely be te beginning of my warrior deck, complete with Sosuke, Son of Seshiro.
As to the specifics of what's actually in the set, I'm more curious about Shadowmoor than Morningtide.

Oh Yeah My Soldiers will Be Back
Oh God that Stonybrook SchoolMaster is going to make the mill summon the school decks rediculous in draft and sealed formats
Also like the Preeminent captain is going to make my Soldier deck even better! Think of it attacking and putting Storm Front Riders into play with itself?!
I Have already requested the day off work so I can goto both Days of the Prerelease

Of all the creatures... Stormfront Riders?
Also, Preeminent Captain looks fun and all, but the problem is that it summons soldiers.
Soldiers.
We're speaking of the traditional white weenie tribe here.
You start getting an extra creature out per turn on your fourth. At which point, if you're dropping creatures from your hand, you're either overextending or losing.
Just how much play does Elvish Piper see?
In casual multiplayer he'll be heaps of fun, especially if your group doesn't run much mass removal, but in Standard it'll hardly cause a ripple unless Morningtide comes with something really splashy and expensive for Captain to fetch.
EDIT: At least it doesn't need to go unblocked like Ninjas did. But then you'll likely be losing it unless... Temporal Isolation?

Show me a changeling in Lorwyn that's faster to drop with Captain than hardcasted. I'm not aware of any.
As for Morningtide, the awesomest changeling has probably already been spoiled - Chameleon Colossus. Of course, it is a four-drop and putting him into play via Captain accomplishes nothing you couldn't have done hardcasting, except perhaps pumping it to 8/8 on your opponent's turn to block, but that raises two questions:
a) why wouldn't a 4/4 blocker be enough at that point
b) why are you playing a double green creature in your soldier deck?
EDIT: Okay, there's one competitive deck in Standard that can make use of this guy. Pan's Labirynth (built around Cairn Wanderer in case you didn't know of the deck yet). Cairn Wanderer can be dropped a turn earlier than usual with Preeminent Captain, and thanks to said shapeshifter, the deck is the only aggro build that doesn't care about opposing mass removal that I know of (mention Ichorid and die).
Still, there aren't many soldiers worth putting in Pan's Labirynth, and green has better means of accelerating into Cairn Wanderer at least a turn earlier.

Not that I would do this but heres a Play.
Turn 1: Play Forest (or anything that can produce Green) use it to play either a BOP (Birds of Paradise) or a Llanowar elves.
Turn 2: Play a Forest or Plains(if you played the elves), Summon Preeminent Captain (PC).
Turn 3: Any basic land, Attack with the PC Use ability to drop Chameleon Colossus, Activate his ability and hit your Opponent for 10 Damage if unblocked.
I like it how about you?

3 Lands at least 1 producing green and either the birds or elves. I count 4 and at least 2 of them can be Green.
I would really have liked it if you were my opponent last night at sealed.

Oh, i thought you played Preeminent Captain on the same turn then, heh, that was stupid. I'm a dominant Blue, so I have to question everything. The question I'd like to ask is what opponent would let that 10 damage go unblocked. I probably would have counterspelled the Captain before any of that went about. Again, sorry for the discombobulation.

"Can be countered" is as bad an argument as "dies to Wrath" and you know that.
EDIT: And back to Morningtide - are you as disappointed with the set's keyword abilities? I mean, Reinforce? The heck is that supposed to be? Second Channel rehash of the block. An unoriginal and badly designed one, too.

I must admit, they are rather...uninventive. But, kinship seems to have promise, but not a very good name. Reinforce can become rather fun, but not for the time being. That Supreme Exemplar looks really good right now. The Mechanics of the cards so far are a little iffy, but it'll pull together by prerealease.

I've got a feeling that I'll be skipping this prerelease. Or at least not participating. If my classmate decides to go, I'll probably tag along to, as it is said, show him the ropes, and perhaps trade some.

Well the thing is if I went first you wouldn't have been able to couter spell the captain, Unless you play the white Mana Tithe (memories of Force Spike), as you only have one land out. That is if I went first.
If you went first would you really waste a counter spell on a 2/2 guy? Keep in mind you would probally play mass removal like Wrath or Damnation which u could use to mass wipe my board ounce I over extend. Mind you game 2 you would certainly counter my captain if you could after you saw just how much he could hurt you.

As the Kithtkin don't get really big in the first place, and its ability can get very tricky in finely tuned battles, and I see countering as a sort of early shield, yes. I would counter. Another thing. Wrath of God and Damnation are too reckless for me EVER to use them. I said it before, and i'll say it again. I'm blue. It's what i do.
PS: If i sound edgy, i'm not. its just my voice.

Okay, so I went to the prerelease.
Before we received our packs to fill in the checklists, I said someone that I was willing to bet that I'd end up with a Colfenor's Plans, because that's just my luck. Then as we got our packs and when I saw a Garruk, I went "damn, someone's gonna be lucky".
Then later I received what I'd end up playing with. My rares were:
Vendilion Clique (sold shortly after)
Dauntless Dourbark (played)
Chameleon Colossus (played)
Reach of Branches (played)
Thoughtseize (sold at the end of the event)
and my number one star...
Colfenor's Plans. Damn.
