He would get along well with Ned Stark and Jon Arryn, but the Lannisters would bleed him dry, if that's even possible for the death.

I'm in the middle of the third book, I find the series pretty easy to read, the story keeps me interested, the characters are - mostly - well though-out and... hm, "alive", all in all this is among the best readings I've had recently. It's my type of fantasy - more harsh, brutal and natural than "magic" and in this regard it comes close to "The Witcher" series by Andrzej Sapkowski which is still the best thing that the genre has to offer by my criteria.
Still, Martin uses some plot devices from time to time which almost manage to make certain chapters and even characters artificial. Some of lord Edard's moves in "A Game of Thrones" just look deliberately designed to kill him in the end so other events can be triggered; Catelyn's actions become more and more unbelievable with time (like all the drama around her make her dumber instead of smarter); I still have problems with the conduct of characters which are literally children but behave like 5-10 and more years older than they are - like Rob Stark and especially Daenerys; certain character decisions - like the "ambassador mission" of Theon Greyjoy as considered by Rob - are obviously stupid for everyone but the people who make them and their closest "advisers" and so on. These things are like a fly in an otherwise very well cooked soup.

Fantasy.  His Wheel of Time series is at what - 11 books now?  'course, Jordan died before he could finish it and it's been taken up by Brian Sanderson, and from what I understand the quality has improved and there's also a projected timescale for completion.  The first four or five were fantastic, but after that... well, I gave up.

There are 13, and the series is finished. Completely finished. I'm on the 9th... and mother of god did some awkward **** just happen...

I have received GoT and the three books that come after it, got them for christmas, but I have not had time to read them yet.I have heard that they are good from all sources, and I think that I'll be getting to them eventually...

gmmm I'm not so for so long series, 13 books. Which author can hold suspense, fun, ambience, connection and a "logical feeling" (=the things roughly make sense and are explained") over so many books? Most weaken after 2-4. Also it squares with the BBB-effect which is still present in many to most fantasy book series. (Anyone nows Markus Heitz, have the "Dwarves" books been translated to english? A good example for that)

EDIT: I now this is kind of necro-posting but I'm currently in the third book of the series this thread bears the name of (nearly done with, to be precise) and, well...these books are just AWESOME! I fell in love with the whole series both books and TV. and the Boardgame. I think I'll also love the cardgame, but I wait for it coming out in Germany since else I'd have noone playing it with me

If only GRRM would stop selling out with tv shows and board games and card games and get back to actually WRITING then this series might regain my interest.

I am currently reading the third book, a few chapters each day, I don't want to rush things like I did with the previous, I want to fully enjoy it.

I believe though that the story will become long-winded as I advance with the volumes, it seems that 2 more books beside a dance with dragons are planned.

I'm sure once the TV series gets a season or two closer the end of the books, they will light a fire under him like Warner Bros did to J.K. Rowling.

He is 63. If they never rush him... and with this speed - a book in 5-6 years... He said something about finishing his next book in 3 years, which I can hard believe...

Yeah, we get it, Lord of the Rings is not the only fantasy in town. Now mr. Martin could give it a rest, then again seven books and 7 kingdoms I suppose... sounds fitting.

That is to be proposed - and I fear it. I think the whole movie thing was very bad to the alter Potter-Books fore example I allways believed and still believe, that originally intended, Harry should DIE with voldi, but as that was suggested by so,me while rowling was in writing the sixth book, all the press got "Nooooooooo!" and "Think of the Children" and the companioes got "Noooo! Think of the Publicity! Think of the potential for a sequel! THink of the MONEY in it!" -.- map. sorry for straying off, but that annoyed me. And it would be SO sad if it happened to these as well
...yet I'm not sure why the games and such should be what slows martin down, I mean, he is not the creator of these, is he?! And I LOVE games

For the number of books...hmmm...am not sure. As I said before I think it very difficult to keep a series good above a certain number of books. and these are not small books, either...yet it seems not that 5 is the last book...I hope that 7 IS the cap, I must convince, since I cannot see how it shall be carried even further.
...for the third book: It's awesome, and the things happening just **** you while reading, imo!

That's good too. Maybe in the summer vacation I'll do some re-readings myself. You can get bored from swimming and playing games eventually

Actually the real reason for my change in pace was that I have to make some money to buy the fourth but I'm quite pleased that I slowed down.
