ISN'T THAT ENOUGH OF A LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT?

To be honored by a flag flown at half mast?  Not even close.  None of that was done in official service to the country.

Allow me to disagree strongly. I do NOT think that you have to do something "in official service to the country" to be honoured by it. That said, let me direct your attention to this part of the quote:

Quote:
With America entangled in the Persian Gulf War, Houston performed "The Star Spangled Banner" at Super Bowl XXV at Tampa Stadium on January 27, 1991. Due to overwhelming response to her rendition, it was released as a commercial single and video of her performance, and reached the Top 20 on the US Hot 100, making her the only act to turn the national anthem into a pop hit of that magnitude (Jose Feliciano's version reached No. 50 in November 1968).Houston donated all her share of the proceeds to the American Red Cross Gulf Crisis Fund. As a result, the singer was named to the Red Cross Board of Governors.

Her rendition was considered the benchmark for singers and critically acclaimed. Rolling Stone commented that "her singing stirs such strong patriotism. Unforgettable", and the performance ranked No. 1 on the 25 most memorable music moments in NFL history list. VH1 listed the performance as one of the greatest moments that rocked TV. Following the attacks on 9/11, it was released again by Arista Records, all profits going towards the firefighters and victims of the attacks. This time it peaked at No. 6 in the Hot 100 and was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.

And to give an impression about what we are actually talking:

CLick Me

So - don't you think SHE deserves the anthem to be played for HER now, flag flown at half mast?

And as a PS to everyone: Please abstain from jokes in connection with drug abuse of stars working in the entertainment business. Thank you.

Yeah that's great and all that she did some charity work.  So what?  Should the church canonize her as well?  Perhaps the federal gov't should make her birthday a national holiday?

Anyway, I know the value in further argument.  I think it's a sham, a publicity stunt, and it's sad to see the flag used in such a demeaning way.  I've stated my case and stand by it.

Don't you think you are getting polemic now? I mean, dropping the flag is a TEMPORARY thing - it's an official salute, not less not more. the other things would be permanent.

Yeah, except that I don't see a "case".
"Insanely inappropriate"? Come on.
Debatable? Certainly.

A sham? A stunt? Do you really find it more appropriate when the flag is halfmasted because some poor kids died in an idiot war who fought there because they couldn't get a decent job and the recruitment officers did coax them into signing?
Isn't THAT the stunt? The sham?
As if anyone were interested in them except maybe their relatives and friends.

But sure, it may be "appropriate". Did I say that I do not like the meaning of that word (not to mention "INappropriate")? Usually, if something is called "appropriate", it's also completely devoid of any real meaning - a ritual.

Anyway, sure, no value in further argument.

I'm so glad that a singer's death over-shadows the deaths and noble deeds of certain members of the armed forces who did not receive such honours. I wonder what happens to soldiers who fight for a country that holds a celeb's death as a more important national pride than the ultimate sacrifice of a soldier for his country. (and lets face it she probably died from an over-dose so it makes this situation even more jaw-dropping)

Besides, if a flag can be offended, it damn well can be sad as well. If she sang a song about me at the Superbowl, I'd be down too. Let the thing mourn. It'll get back up tomorrow.

Call me ... unpatriotic, but don't you think that all these "appropriate" honoring actions are actually more of a glorification of the state and the government that sent the people into a senseless death, than of the dead soldiers?
It is ABSOLUETELY NECESSARY to honor fallen soldiers, especially when it's difficult to see why they actually died in the first place. No one did it better than the German Nazis, mind you. Of course NOW, we - Germany - are more ashamed than proud when the coffins of dead soldiers come back from Afghanistan, because we are not really sure that we are doing the right thing.

Anyway. Would you really want to live in a country that honours only people who died in a war for their country?

Russian soldiers deserved honor, millions died to liberate their country. American soldiers dead at ObamaOmaha beach deserved honor, they died for others freedom. USA today soldiers are just soulless mercenaries, working unconsciously for business powerful lobbies. It is sad when they die, specially when we know it is for others money.

About drugs and famous people being constantly confronted at a terrible stress: I will not judge them by my standards and claim I hold the truth. There is drugs for drugs and drugs for surviving at specific situations. I have no idea what effect has on one's nervous system to be at top 250 times/year, singing in front of million persons, being watched and judged constantly. Did any of you experienced that?

Cause of death is still not official...

Not that it would be important - I mean, I could also ask, do you like the idea of honoring people because of their DEATH only, but not because of their LIFE? After all, we ALL die, one way or another, right? Aren't people usually remembered for what they accomplished in LIFE?

Absolutely she can be honored.  But half mast, I mean really??

Concerts, tv shows, blah blah.  And we are bound to get those for many years to come.   That's how she will be honored, that was the industry she was in.

Lowering the flag, which is a national/state emblem is of major national/state importance, not some pop culture overblown show of grief.

Honestly, I don't really see what the issue is. She was a huge role-model for a lot of coloured Americans - not for all the bad things in her life, but for the good things. Since there goes nothing from anybody by honoring her, I don't really see the problem if it meens a lot for some people.
