You might say, that it doesn't compare at all. It's not your "fight until one side is annihilated" kind of battle, since engagements take only a specific time and do not last until one side has been destroyed. So battles may be quite ongoing affairs, lasting over more than one turn, and the same is true for "invasions", that is, landings to conquer.
The good thing is that you will build ships, and you will build quite a lot of them, actually.
In my opinion the game beats the boring GalCiv II by a mile. I still think that the first MOO is the reference 4X space game because it did a lot of things right. I also think that Stars! has been a great game, Furthermore the exotic Emperor of the Fading Suns has been the most interesting one, especially when you like ground battles.
Endless Space has a lot of interesting concepts and plays like a charm. You can't go wrong with that game.
Also, the support is exceptionally.

It's really a very good game if you like 4x sci-fi with great 3d graphics.

The trailer is terrible, looks like a random 3D artist advertising his work rather than something which is supposed to promote a game. Bad start.

I am still playing MOO2, there is an awesome mod released recently, Icemod. Techs redone, AI redesigned, galaxy editor, race picks editor, one click to set all planets to your choice size/atmosphere, really great. Then in last battle, there are 50 antaran ships with cloak. Thrill.
