Homm: a doomed world

Ok, I've been away for a while, and whilst I really did enjoy working on "War in Heaven" see here, I began thinking of how dark could a heroes setting possibly go. Also, I began to read alot of late 19th century/ early 20th century fiction, sci-fi and fantasy, just so my influences are out there.

so, a bit of fluff to get people interested.

The chapel door burst open and Lord Kurst marched in, the rain outside keeping his hair plastered to his head. Deacon Parno turned to meet him. The two old men looked at each other, one tall, robust and covered in scars, the other frail and meek, the tolls of their respective careers plain to see.
"Father Parno," Lord Kurst said, "I seek you're Guidance."
"His Most High has not spoken to me in quite some time," Parno returned, his glowing golden eyes glittering in the darkness of the chapel "the Celestial mind is quiet, I fear the worse. But, if you wish to consult, I am here for you, my son."
"Our forces face the Vampire warbands coming from the north," Kurst said, briskly "They seek to take the city and everyone in it. And I fear they might. We have barely survived the attacks from the creatures from the forest and the galvanic dead without those parasites coming here. We have barricaded the city as much as we can, but our rations are slim."
"I'm afraid, Lord Kurst, if you want military advice, you come to the wrong man," Parno said, hobbling around the alter with his staff, "dealing with the elven exiles, the galvanic dead, the frost dragons or  the thirsters of blood has become a daily occurance for us, and men far wiser than I are available to council you."
"There is something else," Kurst continued, "Despite my best efforts, I have been unable to reach the legions of the high elves. At least then, we would have some hope, but as it is, I fear we may be outnumbered."
Deacon Parno nodded sagely.
"Can you keep a secret, Lord Kurst?"
"My word is my bond, Father Parno."
"The High elves will no answer anyone. they have retreated to their island home, and are plotting something. They are a dying empire, Lord Kurst, a desperate people. And desperate people tend to seek any way out."
Suddenly, everything went out of focus. Kurst clutched at his head, a deep, throbbing pain embedded into what felt like his soul, as though something primal had awakened. He saw Father parno collapse with a cry, blood falling from his eyes, the old man contorting and spasming. The statues of the saints cracked, jagged lines criss-crossing over their features, revealing something ugly. The sky seemed to turn a black colour, and Kurst felt like he was being watched.
"Father Parno!"
"Kul T'gan Malise." the deacon said, his eyes darting around the room.
"Father Parno, can you hear me! Damn it, Erik, Listen!"
"Victor..." the deacon looked at Kurst, his face white with fear. "Victor, listen to me. The Elves... They've doomed us all..."
"It's Alright, Eric, We'll get you to the infirmary. Whatever devil the Elves have summoned, we will deal with."
"Not Devil," Parno said, his voice cracking with laughter, "Not devil, nor angel, spectre, sprite or goblin, Nothing we know of. They have summoned something that should not be, they have brought something from beyond what we know, and I fear that we are looking at our last days.

Factions

Sanctum- The Human faction

We've been driven into corners and hunted, our children snatched away, our food poisoned, our graves pillaged and our cities lade low. Endurance is something that we do and we do well. However, I say it is not enough to endure, and that we must strike theses monsters away, and wipe out these creatures that dare make us cower in fear. Sacrifice for the good of all humanity.- Pastor Logan Dullriech

Grove- The first elven faction, the elven exiles. monsters from the forest and living trees.

if you go down to the woods today, you're sure a big surprise,
if you go down to the woods today, you'd better be in disguise.
the elves will come and rip out your eyes,
steal your face and tell you lies,
today's the day the elves will to hunt you.
- childrens nursery rhyme.

Necropolis- The Galvanic dead.

All we want is to be left alone! We've been persecuted for our choices and been harassed by mobs for all our lives. We are trying to make things better, to turn back the tide, but instead, we are treated as monsters. We've resurrected the dead, created defenses of lightning, all to save you people, and instead you've burnt down our laboratories and killed our assistants! Well, that's gratitude for you!- Nercomatrist Joanna Welburge.

Keep- the Vampires.

When human life lasts for a mere fraction of a second, why consider it important? they're just sheep, cattle. They can be considered more, thralls and servants, maybe, but like all living creatures, they are just prey for us. Do humans care when cattle are slaughtered? no? then why should we care if humans die? - Blood patriach Edgar Malkov

Citedal- Frost dragons and their Ice golem servants, out to make the world into a frozen tundra and live in it.

Haven- the second elven faction, the high elves... and somethings from beyond the stars...

Desperate?! we are not desperate. Our civilisation has weathered 3 thousand years of hardship, and it will do so again, human. I remember when... besides, look around, we are living in opulance and... what were we talking about again?- high diplomat Eldreth Longshadow, a day before he started bleeding from the eyes and jibbering.

I hope everyone enjoys.

Interesting composition. and unusual! Like the fact that the humans seem to be rather overwhelmed and such, less a power than the rest of the factions.

I wanted to get a real sense of desperation playing from some of the factions. I wanted it to be that they are doing some of what they are doing to survive... but the other stuff is for sh*ts and giggles.

Take the vampires, for example, they need to prey on people to survive as a species. It's nothing personal, it's just genetic. However, they're other actions can't be justified like this and is really done because they're powerful and like to abuse it.

edit: Also, Humans have gunpowder and specialised killers who are able to deal with some of the monsters... granted, the killers tend to be insane or worse, but still.

I'd suggest not using faction-names that are too heavily associated with a specific race.

For example, the High Elves' faction is called Haven, which makes everyone think "zealous goldy humans".

Sanctuary and Fortress have a bit of the same issue... might be worth it to come up with some new names for these ones.

none of the faction names are for definite, simply place holders. if people have some better ideas to suit with the themes of the factions, then I am all ears.

edit: Faction text up for the humans, vampires and necropolis.

I agree with adrius on Haven.
Fortress has allready 2 meanings, so I think it is no longer "reserved".
And sanctuary, I think, is not really reserved either, not as haven. and it fits quite well.

For other names, a bunch of suggestions:

Humans: Spire, Cathedral, Sanctum (not so close to sanctuary), Harbour/harbourage

NEcropolis could imo also be renamed, since it has a very different style seemingly. Something like Labratory, or Asylum maybe?

Fortress: If you want to change it, maybe Tower (was a snow faction once), Bastion, Citadel(I just love that for a town name^^)

Haven: Citadel (could also fit here), Tower (dito) or Palace, maybe? Not sure, how the high helves wil be, they seem less "enlightened" than one's used to...

The humans are not identified as their, I wouldn't put them as the Cathedral and so on. They are defined by their desperation and their need for survival, so I thought they would want to see Sanctuary. Admittedly Sanctum is a better name for this. Bastion would work well, too.

as for changing necropolis to laboratory... possiblity, it would fit with the theme just as much as necropolis. Asylum... not so much.

Changing the fortress to Citedal might be cool, but I could go either way.

Changing the high elves from Haven to Palace would be good, but really, I wanted to set them up as the dark mirror to the human faction, religious and determined to hold onto their glory.
