Can this be played in windows 7?

Standalone or multiplayer-is it possible?

yes. just don't install it to the C: drive, you won't have rights to do anything if you do. i installed mine on the desktop.

Runs without a hitch, You may have to sort out some permission issues first though.(Default install location is fine IIRC)

EDIT: It sometimes crashes on multi-core processors, here's how to fix that.

I haven't had any trouble with it, but I only tried it for testing purposes, and haven't played it much.

1) Logged in as a non-administrator user
2) Inserted CD
3) Opened the CD and right clicked on Setup
4) Selected Run As....
5) Chose one of the administrator accounts and entered the password.

Everything else went smoothly.  I could run the game with no problem.  Haven't tried anything esoteric, though, I just played the tutorial and everything worked flawlessly.

EDIT: Note that this is with HoMM3 ver 1.1, directly off the CD from the HoMM Millenium edition.  Haven't tried anything else.

EDIT AGAIN: And I'm using Windows 7 64-bit Home (OEM - basically what came on the Dell I bought last year)

If running 64 bit you are likely to have problems. I tried many things and searched many forums, all the same result with the 64-bit distribution. The one thing that worked for me was to find the game in its installed version, so you just copy it to your drive. Made it run this way with no posterior issues.
