What is 3DO thinking?

I've read some stuff lately, saying that 3DO is in financial straits and are dependant on income from HOMMIV and so on.

In that case, shouldn't they try to lure (bad choice of words, perhaps) new players to the game in any way possible? Since that would improve the income, I'd assume.

With this in mind, I can't fathom why or even how they've managed to produce such a dull and butt ugly box cover.
A mustardy yellow background and some completely lifeless and uninteresting pics of the towns?

If I was a kid going to my local game retailer looking for a neat game to spend my not-so-hard-earned allowance on, I would've never even rested my eyes on a box that ugly and boring.

The shot for HOMMII was great, and the one for HOMMIII was even better, but now this? The cover of Ocean Trader (a great game, by the way) is a helluva lot more exciting, and having seen it, that says quite a bit.

So Aerial or someone, please come up with something that won't make me ashamed to have the HOMMIV box in the bookshelf.

What do you think?

You're right.  When I buy games, I don't care how good the game is as long as the box looks good.  I like to stare at my game boxes rather than play the game.

Edit: sorry, I was in a mischievous, sarcastic mood when I wrote this.  No harm intended...

well

Pherhaps a bit sarcastic there,
but it's true. The box cover does
look very boring.
When I enter a game shop and
I look at games the first thing you
see is the box cover....
A kid that has never heard about Homm IV
before doesn't run to watch at the boring
box, the kids goes to the game that seems
bost exciting to him, wheter the kid
likes that kinda game or not;
The first thing a kid sees is the
cover of the box, it is a simple as
that, and if 3DO had made a better cover
they would have sold a lot more games,
at least to kids/people that have never heard
of this game before !

The box cover for HOMM2 was just a shield.. The same one was used for its expansion. That's less dull than HOMM4's box?

Yes, cause it was a cool shield, with a lion on, it could be associated with a clan or some sort of allegiance. It is a crest (is that what it's called? You know, those images that represent the family, and which would be used as flags if we were in the 16th century and were at war with another family)

It tells you something about the game (not much, but still, more than a yellow box with a couple of buildings on)...

The Armageddons Blade box was nice !!
I really liked it, I didn't buy it cause of it's looks,
but some other people that doesn't know anything about Homm probably got a bit more interesting.
Well at least until they saw on the minimum requires;

3DO seems to be managed by real morons.Look at the official site, about most or any products.Infos are very rare or just dont say much to "lure" new customers.

If i had financial problems,i wouldn't keep same stupid habits. It's good to keep surprises for the game. But there is a huge difference between too much infos and none at all.Especially when you have 20 fan sites with more infos than the official site.

People here won't look at the box of HoMM4,but joenoob....who never heard of heroes will,if the game doesnt look cool from the cover,he'll spend his money on a crappy game with a good cover.

I don't agree. When I go into a store and check the game boxes, I don't look at the front, but I look at the back, at the screenshots and the text.

The hell with the cover box. Screenshots is more important, especially system requirements.

Certainly the verso is more important than the front, but the front actually tells a lot about the creativeness of the producers. Usually you can foresee what a game is like only judging it by the cover: something that usually is burdened with heroes and swords and mages, and cool women-warrior that usually are large-breasted is a certain indicator that the game is ****.A more austere cover with few but representative elements tells there might be something good behind it; while the comparison between the covers of h3 and h4 tells: what was, now it's gone.

Sure the verso is important too,but i dont know anyone taking each box on the shelves to look behind. They will take a general look of what is there, what's new then take a look at what caught their attention.

If the cover isn't attractive,a person might just overlook it and check the next box, look behind and buy that one instead.

For myself,i could care less how is H4's cover.Could be plain pink with yellow dots,i'll buy it anyway.I know the game, been following it for months now.

But you need to attract new customers, first thing they see isnt the verso,it's the cover. On a shelf with dozens and dozen's of game, you need a cover with something special.

At least they have "hot" colors, red or yellow isn't that bad.

Thorman, congrats, you get the point (as can not be said for all posting here...)

The point is, 3DO needs more people to buy their games, and they don't seem to be trying very hard. By following Vlad's tips, they would sell the game both to aquainted gamers (who, as has been pointed out, don't give **** about the box cover) and to young kids buying the game because of the big breasted amazon warrior fronting the box (this works, I've been that little kid).

Yeah, I do agree that the Box(while it does not necessarily need a he-woman-she-man b**** or whatever on the front) could be a bit more exciting. Perhaps a close up view of one of the towns even(if anyone has seen the Heroes IV add in the March edition of PC Gamer, that Preserve picture looks extraordinary)?

I actually like H4's box.. Nice and colorful. It shows some of the towns in it. I've seen better, but I've also seen worse. I forgot what H1's box looked like, but I like H4's box better than all the other Heroes boxes apart from Armageddon's Blade. But AB's box wasn't all that either. NWC doesn't seem to ever have made really striking boxes that compel you to pick up the box and look behind it. The M&M, Crusaders, Legends, all that stuff wasn't really attractive. Heroes 4 is of about the same quality.

I hope..

The box is SO ugly that nobody buys it over here(when it finally comes out in about 3 months in holland) So nobody buys it and There is finally one for me left! I'm always to late...

Till that time.. i'm forced to get myself an illigal copy... EAT that 3DO! That's because your ending relationship with dutch companies and the game comes here about 3 months later! That's not fair and everybody here will get pirate copies!   I have SO MANY MONEY! And I can't spent it on anything! And all those stupid games get themself delayed about 10000 times.. It makes me sick!

But again.. The box has to be ugly!

Well, I preferred the first view of the box - this one with Titan and Mage in the battle. On the other hand, do you remember the HoMM1 box? Only the picture of book of some sort (probably a spellbook). The only box I liked was the Armageddon's Blade box (and maybe Shadow of Death was nice, but not THAT nice like AB).
