I was writing an essay on America's separation of powers, and whether checks and balances hinder government. Before I began I already made up my mind that the answer is "but of course it does", but now after hours and hours of independent study I think I see the glorious intelligence of the founding fathers.

The founding fathers of U.S. are cool but in this case the credit goes to Montesquieu. The U.S. constitution owes a lot to the Enlightenment and especially French thinkers of that Era.

I think I'm going to write my college essay about the difference between the division of power system and the parliamentary sovereignity system in the Nordic countries. It's interesting how the EU is now pushing our countries towards more division of power. A great example is how the only reason Swedish people can buy alcohol from foreign countries on the internet, and thus circumvent the monopoly, is thanks to ruling from the European Court of Justice. The EU is also expected to punish Sweden for not changing its archaic and laughably disfunctional gambling monopoly. (again, thanks internet!)

That sort of stuff has made me a lot more EU-positiv. Or perhaps I'm just being indoctrinated into the party I'm a member of which is eurofanatical.

lol wut?? I thought all the power was concentrated in Brussels? or maybe that's a way to make individual governments even more inefficient and dependent on Brussels?

in another hand, I think I heard you are one of the few countries in the EU where it isn't a complete disaster. I think the majority of UK and France would like to leave the union for example. might be true of Germany as well.

There is a democratic deficit in the European Parliament, yes. Though the parliament's influence has increased, the eurocrats still have to much power. Of course Sweden has had its economy damaged by the crisises in other european countries. There are people that falsely blame that on the EU here too.

What I was talking about was how the EU has empowered individual liberties and rights in the Nordic (and Baltic) countries by weakening the parliamentary sovereignity principle in favour of more divison of power. With an all-out parliamentary sovereignity system, courts have nothing to say when the state makes bad decisions or steamrolls over individuals. This has changed since Sweden and other countries with the system joined the EU. Courts and lawyers have got more to say against politicians. People can now appeal to the European Court.

the EU isn't responsible of the crisis, but its answers to the problem have had quite disastrous results so far.

Well, it's wrong to assume there's a singular european crisis. It is in fact a number of crises in different european countries. It can not be the EU's responsibility to solve the crises of individual countries. At most the EU can set domestic economic reforms as a requirement for loans.

I now identify loosely with the present day irrelevant Christian Democratic National Peasants' Party in Romania. If I have to vote, it will be for them, even if they can't hope to win a majority.

I'm a "it always depends" and don't like how ideologies seems to merge things together or resuming things with but a few words. I think even the dreaded dictators can offer a good political system with enough transparency and a good will.

I agree. And I don't trust those in the current majority enough, they've proven to be more ineffectual than positive.

BUMP

Okay, now that I've made up my mind, and since it varies a LOT from country to country, not to mention regions or Europe-USA, I'll just say I'm a liberal conservative for Europe, and Nixon Republican for USA. His policies, not his illegalities.

So, I'd have no change for a change in the Republican or Democratic Party today, even if I were American, best thing I could hope for would be a fringe Party in Romania. Not gonna do it.

Not if you think in terms of the system's functionality instead of individuals. Even if you have your idealist, good-hearted dictator who wants nothing but to improve his country, a life-time means nothing when it comes to such matters. Any totalitarian regime will turn corrupt much more faster and heavier than a democracy and all you have to do is look around the actual world to see that. When power abuse gets easier, it becomes the rule rather than the exception.
