All-time town line-ups

Here are mine:

Knight/Castle/Haven

Peasant/Militia - the classic level 1 creature for the humans
Archer/Marksman - the must-have shooter in HoMM
Pikeman/Halberdier - a classic creature neglected by Ubisoft
Swordsman/Crusader - Crusaders are a big part of the Knight faction
Griffin/Royal Griffin - thanks to H3 and H5, the griffos are the emblem of Haven
Cavalry/Champion - another must-have
Angel/Archangel - what would humans be without divine intervention...


Sorceress/Rampart/Sylvan

Pixie/Sprite - I'm all for these little but so effective units
Dwarf/Battle Dwarf - a constant presence in the first three games, impossible to ignore
Wood Elf/Grand Elf - must-have shooter for Sylvan
Druid/Elder Druid - a reliable unit that was sadly given hero class status in H3 and H4.
Treant/Ancient Treant - iconic units for any elven faction
Unicorn/War Unicorn - same as above
Firebird/Pheonix - I like dragons as much as most of you, but the Pheonix was first, back in the days of the Sorceress town.


Wizard/Tower/Academy

Gremlin/Master Gremlin - Gremlin rush certainly had an effect on my choice but I wouldn't have Academy without these guys
Boar/Wild boar - I've always liked the Boar of the Wizard town and feel they've worked best there.
Iron Golem/Steel Golem - must-have for those wizards
Mage/Archmage - same as above
Genie/Master Genie - a constant figure in the Academy towns
Naga/Naga Queen - sory to H5 fans, but the Naga reigns supreme for me
Giant/Titan - needs no introduction


Warlock/Dungeon/Asylum

Centaur/Centaur Archer - As with the boars, I always felt centaurs worked best alongside the walocks.
Harpy/Harpy Hag - I liked gargoyles but harpies I liked more.
Medusa/Medusa Queen - another mythical creature which has become iconic to the Dungeon
Manticore/Scorpicore - they weren't all that great in tier 6, so I downgraded them.
Minotaur/Minotaur King - What would those warlocks be without the minos fighting for them...
Hydra/Chaos Hydra - One does not simply ignore the Hydra...
Green Dragon/Red Dragon/Black Dragon - Right where they belong.



Necromancer/Necropolis

Skeleton/Skeleton Warrior - the essential part of any Necro army
Zombie/Mutant Zombie - The H2 version kicks ass which is why I chose them
Mummy/Royal Mummy - Same as above
Vampire/Vampire Lord - Couldn't play without them
Lich/Archlich - needs no explanation
Black Knight/Dread Knight - same as above
Bone Dragon/Ghost Dragon - same


Barbarian/Stronghold

Goblin/Hobgoblin - Love em or not, they can't be ignored
Warrior/Berserker - I like the idea of Berserkers among the ranks of the Stronghold
Orc/Orc Chieftain - same as goblins
Cyclops/Cyclops King - an iconic unit, but I had to put them lower than the rest
Roc/Thunderbird - Always one of my favorite units
Troll/War troll - Same as the Roc
Behemoth/Ancient Behemoth - same


Inferno

Imp/Familiar - self explanatory
Gog/Magog - same
Hellhound/Cerberus - same
Demon/Horned Demon - same
Succubus/Succubus Mistress - Because female demons are always welcome
Hell Charger/Nightmare - I love these creatures!
Devil/Archdevil - a unit that has had many designs but in essence it's still one to be feared

What is there to explain? I just chose the creatures that I felt were the most fitting for the respective factions, that is all.

Forgive me if I get names wrong, I don't feel like looking them up.

Knight/Castle/Haven
Peasant / Militia - Gots to have some arrowfodder that pays for itself over time.
Crossbowman / Marksman -I love crossbows and crossbowmen are iconic, both for medieval times and for HOMM
Footman / Squire - Gots to have some footknights in there and they were the best
Griffin / Royal Griffin - Cause griffins feel most at home with knights
Monk / Inquisitor - Cause they remind me of sigmarite Battlepriests
Cavalier / Paladin - Cause these protrayed the upgrade from mounted soldiery to knighthood best
Angel / Archangel - Angels are an iconic part of the faction now, but they are pretty much interchangable
(Basically the Heroes 5 one, that one was great)

Sorceress/Rampart/Sylvan
Pixie / Sprite - Cause the faeries fit so well with the Elves
Blade Dancer / Wind Dancer - Cause you gots to have Elves that DON'T fire bows
Hunter / Master Hunter - Cause you gots to have Elves that DO fire bows
Pegasusrider / Silver Pegasusrider - Cause they are basically flying unicorns
Unicorn / Pristine Unicorn - Because Unicorns
Treant / Ancient Treant - Cause they are walking bad-@ss trees
Green Dragon / Gold Dragon - Because upgrading green to emerald ain't no upgrade and phoenixes don't make no sense

Wizard/Tower/Academy
Gremlin / Master Gremlin - Cause you gots to have pointy-eared underlings
Stone Golem / Iron Golem - No Academy has been without them and no should
Mage / Archmage - No Academy has been without them and no should
Djinn / Master Djinn - Don't realy know why, other than they fit well
Rakshasa / Rakshasa Raja - Cause Naga are on their own now and cause they are lions with swords.
Dragon Golem / (never had an upgrade, but it should've) - Because Dragon Mech
Giant / Titan - No Academy has been without them and no should

Warlock/Dungeon/Asylum
Troglodyte / Infernal Troglodyte (Hate the name Infernal, but I still liked them) - What would make better cave underlings than blind toad things
Assassin / Shade - Best Assassins yet (heroes 6 one, but you guess that already)
Evil Eye / Beholder - Cause these were actually Beholders, Shadowlurkers and heroes 4 evil eyes were nice, but these were best.
Dark Raider / Grim Raider - Because riding dinosaurs
Minotaur / Minotaur Guard - No Dungeon has been without them and no should
Manticore / Scorpicore - What's not to love about manticores
Shadow Dragon / Black Dragon - No Dungeon has been without them and no should (shut up about the purple dragons from heroes 1, they were the only dragons so they count as black ones)


Necromancer/Necropolis
Skeleton / Skeleton Archer - No Necropolis has been without them and no should
Ghoul / Rabid Ghoul - Cause zombies suck and ghouls don't
Ghost / Spectre - They just make more sense to me than Mummies which I considered
Vampire / Vampire Lord - No Necropolis has been without them and no should
Lich / Archlich - Cause no Liches was one of the worst mistakes from heroes 4
Tie: Lamasu / Putrid Lamasu <> Black Knight / Dreadknight -Can't decide cause they are both awesome
Bone Dragon / Ghost Dragon - Better than Spiderwomen

Barbarian/Stronghold
Goblin / Goblin Hunter - Stronghold would not realy be Stronghold without Gobbos, I'm looking at you heroes 4
Wolf Rider / Wolf Raider - Cause Gobbos need something to be better
(Orc) Warrior / Mauler - Stronghold would not realy be Stronghold without Orcs, I'm looking at you heroes 4
Dreamwalker / Dreamreaver - Cause they were cooler than Shamen
Centaur / Centaur Marauder - Cause Centaurs are basically Huns/Mongols (I.E. Barbaric Horsemen come to kill and loot and pillage (Which they are likely based on, Horseriding nomads, not Huns/Mongols specifically))
Slayer / Chieftain - Cause I never liked Ogres. Who needs Orges when you already have Orcs
Cyclops / Bloodeyed Cyclops - Because Cylops should shoot burning deathbeams out their eyes

Inferno
Imp / Familiar - Underling argument again
Tie: Succubus / Lillim <> Gog / Magog - Demons throwing fireballs, check. Male or female? Hmmmmmmm, ah, who cares.
Hellhound / Cerberus - Because Cerberus
Juggernaught / Ravager (upgrade should be called Dreadnaught) - Loved these guys
Efreet / Efreet Sultan (needs a better upgrade name) - Because I loved these guys
-Empty place, cause I cannot think of another demon that I liked enough.
Pit Fiend / Pit Lord - Because the Ashanian Pit Lords rule. Devils should be heroes in my opinion

That's good. Looks like you really liked the Dragon Golem. I liked it too, but it didn't make it to my list. And neither did the Efreet.

Yes, I found the Dragon Golems and Efreet very enjoyable. More so than many others of the NWC era. Which is not to say that the Ubisoft era is the be-all-to-end-all, but I generally find their racial approach to the factions better than the loose thematic aproach.

I like it that Ubisoft made Dark Elves be the Dungeon faction, it gave Dungeon a real identity that I felt it lacked. While I don't really like the new Dungeon troops, I appreciate what they did.

PS: Don't take this personally, forums are for people to talk. I'm only pointing the fact that we are in another "no news whatsoever period" just like it was at the beginning of 2013 when we were waiting for SoD and the H6 thread showed little activity...

seeing as how the ubisoft pressrelease has already been and there was no talk of Might&Magic at all as far as I've seen/heard, I doubt there will be any E3 news.

@Drakon:
I agree with you and I don't. I agree that the Dark Elves gave Dungeon an Identity and that is a good thing in itself. However I disagree with you in the fact that it is Dark Elves, where I think Minotaurs would have made a far better race. And I disagree that despite my dislike for Dark Elves, I kinda like the units, in 6 more than in 5, but then 5 had Raiders which I loved.

- when I think about it, it feels like Academy has had the LEAST variation between H3 and H5. So yeah, H5 line-up. Strange, considering that I didn't really like the faction. But I loved the aesthetics in H5 Academy.

Rogue / Bandit / Assassin
Medusa
Beholder
Minotaur
Manticore
Hydra
Black Dragon
- I think Dungeon has always had the most interesting monsters. This one was the hardest to choose creatures from.

- But tbh, I think all Necropolis champions have been weak over all games. H5 Wraiths would make cool Champions.

- Another faction with tons of creatures I have liked over the years: It was so hard to decide between Centaur, Shaman and Ogre Mage.

Nah, I wouldn't be so sure. Heroes is not a blockbuster franchise (no conference worthy if you know what I mean), so if there will really be sth new, I think they'll save it for the booths.

Or they will solely focus on those online spin-offs

Enough with the off-top though. I won't be original here, but my best line-up is simply Heroes III one with minor changes (some nice units from other entries like maybe Rakshasas instead of Naga etc).

I usually don't like ordinary animals being turned into creatures but I just love big cats and the White Tiger was one of the better looking creatures in an otherwise very ugly game.

I agree with both of you here.
I liked the white tiger, I liked it a lot. I always chose it over elves. But Drakon is right that it isn't iconic enough for it to have made my list. That being said, if it were possible for factions to have more than 7 creatures I'd bring it back in an instant. I did so in my Tiers & Coherence thread a while ago. Sometimes, 7 creatures can be incredibly constricting.
And I agree with Xerox, that generally speaking, animals as non-neutrals is a bad idea. But the White Tigers were well executed.
