Is HoMM3 Restoration of Erathia incompatible with HoMM3 Complete for LAN play?

Ok, I've done some searching and poking around, and still really haven't found the answer - though I admit that my search-fu leaves a little to be desired.

That said, I have HoMM3 Restoration of Erathia, from the Millenium Edition package, installed in 2 different Win98 machines.  My son and I play on these machines.  They are on the same LAN, and run through a router (combination wired/wireless, but our machines are wired).  I use my Win98 machine as a host.

The only way I was finally able to get those two to play together networked was via IPX protocol.  If I used TCP/IP, they could somehow get the idea that they were connected, but once the game data started to transfer to start the game, the non-host machine couldn't get all the data from the host.

My girlfriend has a Win7 machine which has a wireless connection to the same router mentioned above, and is running HoMM3 Complete, downloaded from gog.com.

She believes she's installed IPX protocol on it somehow via some research on the internet (involving copying some IPX-related files from her World Of Warcraft installation?  I'm not clear on this).

However, her machine still acts like it can't see my or my son's Win98 game if one of us is hosting.

We have also tried having her host it - at which point neither my nor my son's Win98 machine can see the game she's hosting.  In general, I always host though.

Is it a problem with compatibility with the 2 different versions of HoMM3, or are we having network communication/connectivity issues?

Only game clients with the same version are compatible.

Examples: HoMM RoE v1.1 (out of Millenium box) is compatible with original RoE patched to v1.1 using official patch v1.1.
HoMM RoE can be patched to v1.4 (latest version) and will be compatible with another RoE client patched to v1.4 using official patch.
HoMM Complete v4.0 is only compatible with another v4.0 HoMM Complete Client.

Ah, gotcha.

I think the 9x machines are running RoE 1.4.

Eh, maybe I can find the 9x-compatible versions of the expansions and turn them into the equivalent of HoMM3 complete?

I have to slightly disagree here.

ALL updated versions are compatible with each other!

Means:
RoE version 1.4
SoD version 3.2
Complete version 4.0

are able to play with each other.

The problem you have described sounds more like a connection / network issue.

You can easily check that out by trying to play through gameranger.com

You can sign for free, open a room and just connect. gameranger "ignores" router issues, which cause the most problems.

You may want to read my helping guide for online playing which I have created just for those issues.

Hm, well, we put an installation of HoMM3 Complete on my son's and my WinXP machines, and are able to play each other with IPX.

My GF's Win7 machine, well, that's a different story.

She and my son played via GameRanger, though it's a slight hassle dealing with having to play it through an Administrator account.  That is:
- My son's XP machine lets him play HoMM3 in his own account if he runs HoMM3 as Administrator.
- However, with GameRanger, he has to log in as Administrator.  In his own account, even running GameRanger as Administrator, HoMM3 will fail to launch, complaining about a missing disk (or missing files? can't recall offhand)

It's sort of bizarre.  But I could've sworn ONCE that we got GameRanger with HoMM3 to work without being logged in as Administrator.

Might try seeing if I can open the appropriate ports in the router - I'd really rather play without the need for extra software if at all possible.
