Asalah/Masfar OTK with Pao deathseekers would be cool!

I must say after playing a bit of every faction in standard, my favorites:

- Inferno -> Deleb 5/1/2
- Orc -> Acamas 4/1/4
- Necro -> Ariana 4/6/1
- Academy -> Masfar OTK 1/6/3

I don't play the other two factions in standard cos they are just bad.
So for open:

- Sanctuary -> Ishuma 5/1/1 (can't live without Sayama variants)
- Haven -> Sandalphon 4/4/1 (can't live without glories & w/captains)

EDIT: @ RedEmp: I also got 1 wildcard for second week now....hmmmm seems like the norm (they say it goes up to max 5 wild cards).

As Haven is a dead faction in standard, I feel sanctuary comes pretty close to that in open, the strongest deck I find it to be Akane s which is nothing more than a weaker Myranda; Takana and Yukiko cannot compete against top decks, and Ishuma got so nerfed, I mean the pao and da alone is enormous but making her ability cost 1, when it was so vital for her to use it in turns 3,4,5 just wrecked the hero; a very bad move in my book from ubi because I always enjoyed playing her, and it took more skill to play her well than people gave her credit for; anyway my point was that Sanctuary has become now the weakest faction in open, because I find Adar 4/4/2 quite strong now.

Yeah Ishuma was my staple hero, and agree with you, turns 3,4,5 were important to use ability and it wasn't such an OP ability, I still play her if it's 5 Sanc wins I need for daily.

Had an all out necro swiss last night and it was nuts! The whole 3 duels took the full 45 minutes! Long duels with tit for tat turns, mostly Ariana's.....I won the 3 duels but on the skin of my teeth.

I keep thinking of building a passive demon deck for open with fortunes and creatures that deal damage to enemy hero....hmmmm.....what do you guys think?

yo Dub, congrats on the swiss dude - that must have been crazy difficult all nec - kinda reminds me of duel of kelth when all i saw was orc players.

passsive is a good idea in theory, however with rush being so strong at the moment i am not sure you will have enough defense and time to allow passive to really begin to work, that being side lets test build it

Played DotA 1 since 2006, and followed Pro player since then through all these years, and I am still playing DotA 2 now so I follow it a lot and know a lot about it.

1) Prize pool will never be that big for a card game.
2) Even if it can be that big somehow, Ubisoft really knows nothing about marketing, the game just isn't that popular and since their changes in DoC economy, it is just going downhill.
3) If game as good as DoC was made by Valve or Blizzard, then we could talk about it. Just look at Hearthstone, it is game that is worse than DoC in almost every aspect, and still every tournament that has Starcraft 2/DotA 2 also has Hearthstone there, and from what I've gathered, there is already a lot more money involved in Hearthstone than it was EVER in DoC, and DoC is like 2 years older...

So yeah, one can only wish, but I am afraid to say that if Ubi don't change something, DoC won't have bright future.

I would have creatures for attack/defense too (especially the passive Caller of voids and Thrall of hatreds).
Combining the following enemy hero damage in a deck just seems tempting:
- Altar of destruction (2 damage) (potential 8 damage)
- Hall of torment (3 damage) (potential 12 damage)
- Ur-Jubaal's call (3 damage) (potential 12 damage)
- Mana burst (2 damage) (potential 8 damage) (situational)

Anyway, but be cool in theory but practice might seem weak....

It isn't, it is completely free.

The thing is, first 2 internationals had fixed prize money of 1,6 million $ IIRC. After that, they had one amazing marketing move. They had created the compendium for International 3. The people that buy compendium will get 1 out of 5 Legendary items that were created just for International(items that you use to change the cosmetic look of certain heroes, and being Legendary means that they are the rarest items), the same people could then collect the cards of their favorite players and put them into compendium etc. a lot of small stuff.
Most important thing is that a lot of money that Valve got from compendium went straight into the prize money for international 3.

And from the prize pool of 1,6 million $, they went up to the 2,8 million $.

But still, that is not that surprising considering that Gabe Newell is genius when it comes to Valve.

so the big question is how do you attract new players to the game - DoC has unfortunately appeared to loose players rather than gain players - which in my mind doesnt make sense as of course i really am stoked to be playing this type of game.

has anyone else played a card based game here? and what was that like, did it follow a similar lifespan?

A rather played Real TCG (No major beands, but rather small ones) These usualy had a niech market but a strong cult. I've seen single cards that have been sold for over 1000 Crowns (40-50€), for a game that was 10-15 yours dead, and those were not even in the local language.

The reasons I see DoC losing to such games as Hearthstone is
1: Brand/Distributor: Ubi may be large, but it can not match the cult status of Blizzard and their WoW. An entire generation of player grow up on it, You could say the samo about MaM, but that generation was not that strong, and it is a bit more back in the past.
2: Promotion: Whyle you hear about HS everywhere, DoC is still a small project, without much effort given into it. Ubi does not have such major events, and I've yet to see them promoting other brands inside an event dedicated to another brand (MaM on AC event? or WD event?)
3: The fan base: As much as the MaM fanbase is dedicated we have a strong habit of insulting everything new that is added. Most of the people crying how their favorite game from 15/20 years back is so supperior to the new instalment etc. We constatntly want changes, but we hate them, when they are not to our liking.

How to fix this?
First of all Ubi has to make a move to boost their brands (in general). They have to realize what their true potential is, and make some investmants.
Make a better model that motivates players to invest into the game. (Example Alt. artworks are nice, but they are cards. I would rather pay 500 seals to change all of my DA/WM to the alt artworks, rather then to re-buy the cards for cash. Just change the skin, I don't need another spaceholder in my collection.) Make  it as a key related feature. Yey I like Ishuma, and if I pay 5€ I get a much cooler version of the pic, why not. But No I wont pay 30€ for a card I already have.
The fanbase must shut the hell up on thy cry side. Sure some card combinations end up beeing to much of an exploit, but acting like bu.h.rt children because my favorite deck got nerfd/owned? This is a CCG, their are dozen of decks out there, you should try something more.

I have my issues with the game, but in the end, I did not se a deck in the standard meta that could not be beaten, and/or is was to much of an easy win (but yes I have 4 decks that hit the top ranks in beeing more ore less the best in what they do)

well DoC is sth inbetween a CCG and an online game. The thing with online games is that they have a limited time when they are popular and then they often become a niche game.
there's a very interesting presentation about F2P online games (AoEO case-study) if you interested: http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/203965/Video_FreetoPlay_the_Wrong_Way_in_Age_of_Empires_Online.php

a few words on HS
HS is actually a good thing in the long run, imo, since some HS players may seek similar products and try DoC for example. The problem is that when a new player bored with HS creates a new account in DoC he will have the experience of HS' Arena so he would think oh cool instead of Arena we have Swiss tournies - Let's try it out. He starts a swiss and he's losing to a much better deck and then he start again and he bugs out (let's be honest we still have bugs sometimes). Well, no comments are needed...

I think one thing has changed: previously DoC, as one of the first F2P CCG used to acquire players that were new to the genre, now a big portion will have some experience of HS or similar product. In general people do NOT grind twice in the same type of game (unless they are hardcore lovers of specific type of games), so DoC absolutely needs to implement a mode that let new players to enjoy the game fully (= access to almost all cards) and let them learn the game at the same time without grinding first especially that after the new economic changes the game is very grindy. Draft is the simplest answer but a simple arena won't work b/c DoC is different than HS.

Enclase was right when he left DoC for HS and said that "Sophisticated gameplay doesn't matter when basics aren't done well" - or sth similar i'm quoting from memory.

btw: i played casually HS for a month and stopped

Agree pretty much with everything above.

I've been saying this for a long time, but the only reason why I've found HS more fun than DoC was arena(draft). Even if I didn't have all cards, I can always play arena, every time with different hero, and when it is the same hero, it is always different deck. If I am lucky, I could even see how it is like to play with some strong legendary cards, I could test everything.
There is no metagame in Arena, you always play against different decks and matches are almost always different.

DoC devs said that they were gonna make a draft mode but in the future, they have no time for it now(lol?). I guess it will be a too little too late.

All I can say is that since Feb 2013 I have been playing DoC all most non-stop, give or take a week here and there to play some game in between.

That's the thing, playing games like Crysis, Far Cry 3, etc. lasts for a week then I finish the single player and move back to DoC!

Besides Heroes V, it's the game I have put the most time into.

The only thing I would change to DoC: option to have a 20 second time limit...I am quick thinker and fast off my feet, don't need alot of time to make my turn (even with fortune heavy deck).

So. I just faced the most interesting Necro deck in standard for a while: A plague bearer based Ariana.
Somewhat similar to my Myranda, this deck focuses on creating a one time burtal power advatage by deploying one or more very strong creatures thank's to their cost beeing lowerd.
I think I might give it a try :-).

@ Nameless:
I have great respect for you as an open player, but I must ask this. When focusing on mid game rush decks with spell support, why did you chose Ishuma over Yukiko? I know Ishuma has a great abilitie, But yukiko's starting values are  more Peddler friendly, plus she has access to Air magic, where cards like Lightning strike are, and the Wombo Combo.
