CPU fix

Hello there!

I've had problems with running HoMM3 on my Windows 7 envoirments and after lots of googling, found that I could stop Heroes3.exe from crashing by opening Task Manager and setting affinity to CPU 0 only. This fixed my crashes, but was tedious to do every time I felt like playing my favorite game.

So I made a compatibility fix! This is extremely easily installed:

1. Download from here
2. Unzip
3. Run Heroes3fix.bat
4. You can just delete the files afterwards, no need for them.

The only thing this fix does is making sure Heroes3.exe and Heroes3 HD.exe run in CPU 0 only. Note that the .exe files need to be named exactly that and must be version 4.0

Let me know if you appreciate this!

Haha, I can understand that.

I am not completely new here, though.

You could trust in the good of mankind! But if you too are using Task Manager to set affinity and whatnot, running this and then posting that it's safe might help a lot of other users.

Somebody trustworthy on this site could also install it under Sandboxie and then see that it is completely safe.

Lastly, I'm pretty sure people who want to spread virus and mayhem use spambots and prey on pr0n downloaders, rather than the very small H3 community.

You can also run the HD mod with every option turned off except for the CPU patch that's included within the mod .

I thought HD mod didn't work in GameRanger? This prevents a GameRanger game from crashing, then.

I wouldn't know. I never use GameRanger myself and it's the first time you mentioned it as a requirement, in this thread .

I'm curious, especially since my little gaming group is suffering from H3 crashes too, what is the generally used and accepted way of fixing it? I mean, surely a "compatibility fix" must have been considered before this thread was created...?

many of the newer computers have problems with HoMM3, because they run on multiple processors. if you know(or can find out) how to run off of only one processor, HoMM3 will run fine. what you're looking for is "affinity", when selecting the program/details in task manager, if using newer versions of microsoft windows.

Which is exactly what my compatibility fix does. And only that.

Oh it was! It was considered by Evaline. Unfortunately, I don't think anyone before me uploaded this to the net, but here it is. I strongly recommend it if you're getting the random crashes - or set affinity to avoid them.

Could you please re-upload this? I'm having random crashes with Windows 7 64-bit and Windows 8 64-bit computers :/ I'm also running the latest HD mod, but I'm not sure if that matters as I still get crashes all the same

I'm sorry, I had forgotten all about this thread. I'll reupload it as soon as I get the internet back on my PC, it mysteriously dissappeared today.

Alright, I had completely forgotten this thread.

I have reuploaded it to my Drive, so it should stay up forever now.

I have not tested on Windows 8 or 10, but being such a simple tweak, it probably works.

I hope this makes life easier for somebody.
