Texturing, adding-removing questions by konterr56

Hi everyone!I've wanted to make a thread where people can help for (currently) noob modders like me, in everything we want know about modding. I do not think about what is in the Modding wiki or something other thread.

I think the most helpfuls will help us in this like:          SimonaK,Fauch,Hayven,Radar, etc.

1)  I think we should start with the textures. There are much threads about how to retexture a creature, but there's no one which can show or explain us how to remove or add weapons or masks to creatures. I think it can be good to know about if somebody can do it to make his/her own imagined being with that equipment that he/she wants.

  2) The 2nd would be that how to retexture a creature as good as an advanced modder, I mean in some threads are as good retexures what I don't know how could they do it. With Photoshop CS4 or with what, cuz i don't know what's the best tool for that retextures like this:

http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?TID=32731
and this guy moreover didn't make theese downloadable

For 1st thread i think it's enough so i very hope you guys can help us.

Great

1) To make a part of texture (model) invisible - like if it was unexistant use alpha channel while editing texture. Use eraser or something. In GIMP if you mark a part of texture and press delete, it becomes "empty".

WARNING: If in the .(Material) file (it can exist alone or inside the .(Model) file) texture is said as:

AM_ALPHA_TEST - everything's OK
AM_OPAQUE - change it to AM_ALPHA_TRANSPARENT as the game will 'see' empty parts of texture as if they were never erased in the Opaque mode
AM_TRANSPARENT - the transparency of the model will depend on the alpha channel 'strongness' - it can be half-transparent, quarter-transparent and so. Otherwise the game will make only fully transparent parts of the texture transparent in the game.

To add weapon or ANYTHING to the model - check my tutorial on joining models in H5

2) The only way to do that is to become familiar with your graphics program. I cannot tell anything else as you can see that I'm terrible texturer

You'll need something in kind of the GIMP or the Photoshop. I'd prefer the GIMP as it's totally free. However you'll need some time to get on well with it. To "erase" part of texture in the GIMP you'll have to:

1. Use 'eraser' tool in 'drawing' section OR
2. Mark unnecessary part of texture and press Delete or Ctrl+X

The alpha channel is already made so you won't need to add it.

To be honest it's good in modding to know basic keyboard shortcuts such as:

Ctrl+Z - back
Ctrl+Y - forward
Ctrl+C - copy
Ctrl+P - paste
Ctrl+X - cut

In the GIMP you can use 'magnifying glass' by pressing Ctrl and moving the mouse wheel.

To open .dds textures with the GIMP you'll need to download plugin. You'll find it easily.

His axe in included into his body texture. You can find blade and handle there. If I see correctly the handle is in the top-right corner and the blade near the head - on the right side.

Tip: If you don't know what part of the texture is this that you want to erase, use brush in a intensive colour such as cyan , paint a part of the texture, save and reload the Map Editor. Check what has changed, use Ctrl+Z (in our polish keyboard there are 2 keyboard style and when we press Ctrl+Shift(+E for exporting images), the style changes so that Y replaces Z, Z replaces Y and some more weird things happen so that Ctrl+Z works like Ctrl+Y - I don't know if you have similar problems with hungarian keyboard but if you do, just press Ctrl+Shift), erase a part of texture if you made sure that's it or paint another piece and reload until you find out where's this thing in the texture.
Very useful during 'cleaning' when there are 'bugs' left in texture and they float around your creature

<AlphaMode>AM_OPAQUE</AlphaMode>

to

<AlphaMode>AM_ALPHA_TEST</AlphaMode>

I don't see any transparence in these pictures. I should be able to see the grid under it. when you erase your image, you should see a grid under it, not a white page.

I hadn't checked it before reading your message

Oh damn it. What a stupid mistake. Sorry, it was mine. Just change

<Scale>0</Scale>

to

<Scale>1</Scale>

so that the axe will appear. The rest you made is well done. Only texture is cut quite wrongly but it is possible to correct. And... you don't need Material 3.0, 3.1 and AIGeometry in it You have only to put the modded files - SkelAnims (e.g. T5b_Executioner-arena-idle00.xdb), Effect.xbd, Instances, textures and so on.

The Scale param changes the general size of the added model. 0 makes it unexistant and 1 is standard. Some bones change size of the glued model. Rotation also does that (if more than 0.5) - but it warps only one or two dimensions and the model becomes long and thin.

The "<Scale>" is very useful, as well as Placement and Rotation.

X is horizontal axis (left -> right)
Y is vertical axis (near -> far)
Z is height axis (down -> up)

However, the placement may be different for different bones and animations.

ok but it takes me too much time, because when im editiing the position, the editor is on too.So, if the editor is on when im editing than i clicked on the save of the xdb file and than it cant allow me to save it to the pak file because it writes(like this):"it cannot save because the map editor is on!"
So im so angry of it!!

You don't have to pack it. Just put the unpacked 'Characters' folder in /HoMM5/data/ and the Map Editor will read it.

Just to have MapEditor on and reload it each time you change something in the Characters (or any other) folder.
