As the subject matters and there is a lot of opinions, I suggest to centralize the discussion under this poll :

What sort of skillwheel system would you like to be implemented in H7 and why ?

In my opinion the skillwheel is a great idea that can make you build your perfect hero. I hated when i had only four random options of skills after each level up and sometimes i didn't like any of the four. I am completely in favor of the skillwheel, but i understand that the random system adds fun, the surprise element makes everything new, no game is the same. They should introduce the skillwheel but with a Random Skill option, just to please everyone.

Voted for "Both systems implemented". I like H5 version of the skill system, but situations similar to H3's "Eagle Eye vs mysticism" were also common . THAT was something I hate.

It's so funny to find so many comments "H5 was awesome" or "It was great in H5" when you still remember how much hate (because you cannot call it "feedback") H5 used to get after release. Almost every choice of developers was questioned . Now we all look through rose tinted glasses called TotE at a black sheep called H6 .

Voted "both", because while I do want some random elements, I want a different sort of randomness to the traditional system.

Random all the way, 'eagle eye or mysticism' style!

Actually great skills for secondary heroes (they don't have to be too weak though) !

When you get to chose between Eagle Eye and Navigation for the main hero(or something along those lines), you really get a feeling that it is better to just uninstall the game.

Of course H3's system is not perfect, neither is H5's. Though fixing issues like "banning" Nav skill on non-water maps, make all perks good, or rework the system to get H5 "ultimate skill" still looks to me a way better call than suppressing completely the random.

I guess that having a system where all skills and perks are good wouldn't make random a problem anymore, don't you think ? It would just be a matter of improving the system patch by patch and game by game.

On a more personal touch I think random must have some impact in a HoMM game.

I prefer random skill trees, but I assume it would be very interesting if skill probabilities varied depending on your faction, game actions and playstyle. For example, it would be awesome if probability of getting Diplomacy were decreasing every time you didn't spare lives of fleeing creatures. Or, if you care about your troops and win battles without casualties, then you get better chances to pick Tactics, and so on.

As close to H5 as possible, after, well, ten years or something, its still a thrill to see how the hero will develop when multiplying. I have a plan, sometimes it works, some times one has to create plan b, c .. etc.  The balance between randomness and planning in the H5 wheel is just awesome :-)

Definitely random.

If you're not slamming your fist into the desk over the injustice of the game, then you have failed at making a good Heroes game. You need to force the players to adapt and to make the best of circumstances. The Heroes 5 system of randomness was perfectly satisfying for me. They don't have to mirror it with whatever H7s system is, but just as long as it forces the player to choose from limited options.

If they choose completely random , I hope they ll give us a bigger choice, like 6 instead of 4 per lvl up.

It couldn't be too random with 7 magic schools and mage guilds, right?

I mean, think about it, and imagine Academy: there is no way, academy's spell selection can be limited, so they must have access to all schools and all spells. Random skill picks from SEVEN magic schools? with classic Mage Guilds? Random ability picks, even?

The problem to solve is how to deal with magic schools, magic skills, spells/mage guilds and magic perks/abilities. That's the hub the whole wheel turns around.

Well yes they shot themselves win the foot with the whole 7 schools of magic thing. Luckyly there is a simple way to make sure you get your preferred spellschool by making them perks instead of skills and making only skills randomly gained while perks choosable.

How is that supposed to work? One perk for a whole school? 3 skills, then, one Might, one Magic, and one Neither-Nor?

Lets say a third of the schools belong to the sorcery skill while the other two thirds to enlihtment/wisdom. Or sorcery gains the elemental schools, Enlightment the Light/Dark and Wisdom the Prime schools. Basic skill sets the mastery level and perks open up the schools. That leaves space for a reasonable number of spellschools and/or bonus skills.

That makes no sense insofar that it would simply amount to a different spell organization: Your Enlightenment would basically be "Twilight", giving Perks Light and Dark Magic (an idea I also had with Twilight, Steam, Horizon and Prime skill (Prime being the most powerful), only that you don't need Perks anymore, because once you got Basic Twilight (randomly) you were also eligible to pick T1 spells and you would also get Advanced Twilight easily.

So with spell reorganization into "meta schools" amounting to considerably less than 7 we have no problems in the first place - however the question was, if there are to be 7 schools of magic, how is a random pick with traditional mage guilds possible?

That is why I said they shot themselves in the foot.
We can't. Not with the traditional anyways, unless you consider the H4 way traditional...
Say you want a prime/fire/earth specialization with your academy hero. Academy mage guild gives a random selection of light/dark/prime(or whatever). You get to build 2 extra(3 for academy town speciality) buildings unlocking 2 more spellschools H4 style thus you get to have your prefferred build and the spells you need for it.
