Poll Question:
Would you like to be able to play the music themes from the previous game?

An idea popped into my mind: why not allow the players to choose the music in Heroes 7? For instance, after you finish the Haven campaign, some secondary quest etc. you unlock some of the themes from the previous games. Than you can make a choice of e.g. the Haven town theme from any of the previous games. The themes do not need to be part of the game, but a downloadable content.

Would you like to be provided with this option?

I don't remember how it was in H6 but I always used to change the mp3 from the music folder back in the day. Should be easy to organize the folders like that.

Heresy!

You do not change the themes of Heroes games. EVER.

I don't see a point in this. Composers put a lot of work into a games soundtrack not for players to play older tunes "cus they liked it more". Soundtrack is a part of games identity. There are ways to play different music in the background if you like...

In H6 you had to get a tool in order to access music files !

You can turn off the in-game music (but keep the sound effects) and play whatever you want in the background. No need to implement anything in the game itself.

Players should be allowed to do whatever they want just like it was in Heroes 3. Don't like a tune ? Replace it.

Why should I even care about the amount of work put into a music if I don't like it ?

That's why I said there are ways to change it, for instance by playing music in the background via Winamp, Foobar etc.

It's a matter of your own views, how you treat the work of others etc. The composer either doesn't give a f* as long as he is paid, or he feels sad about not appreciating his work.

And like I mentioned, there are ways to do it, and besides, aside from, I don't know GTA III (if I'm not mistaken you could insert your own radio station), I can't remember that many games with such a function...

We cannot use the tracks from Heroes 1 to 4 in the game. The deal Rob & Paul made with NWC ensures they keep the rights on all the tracks they composed back then. So if we were to allow using the good old tracks in H7, Ubisoft would have to license them from Rob & Paul (which is what we did in order to use them in H6, but that licence was for H6 only).

If we have to spend money we'd rather spend it on new, original music. Especially since the original sourcefiles of most of the old soundtracks have apparently been lost, so we would be stuck with the compressed files, which would probably not sound that good (the few licensed tracks we used in H6 had to be redone from scratch by a composer named Rick Knight).

What about the tracks from H5, or the tracks that were original to H6?
And this still leaves open the option to put all the music in mp3 files that can be replaced.

They could always make a folder for the music with mp3 files and let the fans do the dirty work, if they want to.

I think it depends on how Unreal 3 packages its data. IIRC it stores everything into .upk files.
The good news is that since U3 is a widespread and popular engine it already has a big modding community with lots of useful tools.
