I must admit that Haven looks promising. The one unit I was really afraid of was that Guardian/Justicar, and for good reason. It actually turned to be a full time Damage Dealer, which is unfitting and redundant. I was expecting something else entirely, something more DoC like. Shame.

^ Yes, I can think of a million strategies with the Guardians/Justicars already. Which is a shame because I probably wouldn't care enough for the unit to make them anything else besides canon-fodders.
Yeah, the art sucks that bad.

Aside from the horrid Justicars, I think I would generally enjoy Haven. It's a great improvement from all the "Haven is the basic faction" gameplay in H5 you know.

Because of Maeve's rule...

Now, we have amazon warriors for Vindicator like for swordsmen.

Say, are the Crossbowmen women now? That would really confirm my suspicion about Maeve making the warrior women join the military 'en masse'.

I think that the Seraphim Champion unit is on the female dominant side, this time around. Thanks to Maeve's rule, again.

I wonder if the Cavalier unit will be as expensive as the two previous titles of Might and Magic Heroes. Maybe the cost of elite troops will decide the choices of players as for their favorite line-ups of battlefield units, this time around.

What surprises me though, no griffins and, I do not seem to feel like being in a rut about it. Sieges of enemy castles will be for Seraphims to make the main assault, this time. Hope there will be good spell-power gaining along the maps of this title, because, the hero will need to use a lot of destructive spells to back up the crossbowmen attempting to help out the Seraphims, once these champion holy soldiers get to be within the Castle walls of the enemy City.

The Juticars can still easily be made more interesting if they only got the First Strike ability. I still remember the awsomeness of the H4 pikeman/dragon golem all because of that ability. That would make them suddenly not just glass-cannons but a serious pain to take down.

To be honest, I expect them to be the toughest to bring down out of 3 elites from Haven. As Protolisk said before it feels like that Haven has 3 defensive units(Legionnaire, Justicar, Seraph), 3 offensive units(Dire Wolf, Horseman, Swordmaster) and 2 ranged units that support both of these types(Crossbowman, Chaplain).

Justicar has that opportunity retaliation which is most likely the same ability Sentinel from H6 had, and that makes them great at defense together with Legionnaire, building up great defensive formation. It just doesn't make sense to give them opportunity retaliation and make them glass-cannons because that completely the opposite. If you make them glass-cannons, opponents will focus them and it will make their retaliation ability useless. But if you make them tanky, then opponent is forced to attack other units or just do a lot less to Justicar, and if he attacks someone adjacent to Justicar, he is getting retaliated by both units. Kind of win-win situation(depending on what unit opponent is attacking of course).

Now, I am pretty sure that they also can hit hard but I don't know how fast they will be. I doubt that they will be as fast as Dire Wolves/Horsman/Landshnekrtgsdfs and I think that they will slow them down or will waste few turns to catch up, but who knows we will see them in the actual game. I expect them to be more defensive than the rest of Haven elites, that is for sure.

Legionnaires with first strike would be fun Uber-defensive upgrade that also hits first? That would be priceless.

I didn't say they had to be glass-cannons. They can easily be steel-cannons but the thing is to balance out a unit it has to have a flaw. Since it has proper armor this time it can not be defense so it is probably HP. I wonder how fast they will be though. I hope they have high initiative atleast.

uhmm Justicars can't be tanky. Just look at them.
This is a fantasy but it still resembles real world physics.

It's true that they aren't bulky, but did you see their armor?
First of all they don't have a boobplate (which gains points in resistance in my book and IRL), second they have a full plate armor, the only weak point is having the neck exposed, maybe a chain coif would have been great.
Maybe they cannot be as tanky as squires were, but they will surely have a good defense rating.

And they still can have some holy aura that protects them.

When we are at it, you might as well explain why Mages/Disciples have more HP than Golems, and hundreds of other illogical things in Heroes games.

They seem to favour lighter armour for mobility and their abilities seem to confirm that. Their shield and armour no doubt protects them nicely but it can't be very heavy judging from the way they move. Then again Ashan has starsirver that is lightweight but incredibly hard and dragonsteel that is easily enchanted so appearances could be deceiving

You didn't play much H4 in recent time did you? First strike is simply that. A strike that hits before the enemy attack, a pre-emptive strike.

Well if I'm not mistaken first strike also allowed you to attack a defender before the defender retaliated, but maybe my memory fails me, it's been ages since I played H4 after all. Either way, I'm relieved that they haven't made any disclosure of simultaneous retaliation returning.

Group Attack and Group Defense + Group retaliation...

...is quite in the strong possibilities as for this newest title.

Flanking and rear attacks suggests all battlefield possibilities will be mostly implemented. It will entice the player to be really careful at both attack and defense of it when it comes to battlefield's land gain. A lot of Chess board strategy will be put to good use, now.

Remember how a player gets surrounded in a Chess game by the opponents pieces and, how difficult it became for that surrounded player's army to both defend itself and do a proper counter attack in order to re-gain its own side of the board or, maybe, the enemy's side while at it? I defeated a lot of players doing so. First, smash the opponent's corners and push it towards the center of the board or, make a very strong penetration in the middle of the board to seperate the enemy' army while weakening it too much for it to surround and choke my own army.

So, this battlefield experience will now, activate all of these complex tactics and strategies plus the real life effects of the flanking and rear end attacks that seriously diminishes defensive abilities to counter attack. Therefore, a good battle formation will be necessary to avoid these, really, uncomfortable situations.

As I've just arrived home, I have been able to see the animations and I must say I'm in love with Justicars. Even the shield/sword is no problem as they are not standard sword and shield. I can't believe I'm excited about Haven. All thanks to this unit.

What made it so good? I thought it lessened strategy and not improve it. And first strike + counterstrike is so meh it's not funny...
