Dungeon, Fortress, Tower and Conflux. The rest are meh.

I do have a soft spot for the Sorceress town of H2 as well, and Rampart is wonderful aesthetically, but I fear it started the genericization of the faction by having to many elven creatures and heroes, that Ubi took to new lows.

Fortress easily then comes Conflux and Stronghold

Easy to remember if you think of it as a 3x3 schematic, Lawful - Neutral - Chaotic from left to right, Good - Neutral - Evil from top to bottom.

genius

Inferno would be lawful though, Devils are known to make pacts

I'd actually argue that Dungeon should be Lawful Evil, as it's governed through pacts or enslavement of different races. Inferno, as the town of a malevolent spices traveling from world to world to bring destruction and death, would be Chaotic Evil. Necropolis on its hand, clearly governed by nothing else than power (over the undead) as shown in the campaigns, should be Neutral Evil.

i voted fortress (I do hope it's the H3 fortress we are talking about here), but I like rampart just as much, too.

husham you are a good guy, but including Kronwerk, Cathedral etc., but forgetting Conflux is a fail, you should check your stuff before posting it, just saying.

I always liked the underdogs so my favorite town is Fortress and I also like Inferno. I play all 9 (10 with Cove) towns though, but Castle I always found kinda boring.

I think you mean Town.

I don't have one favorite...

But I like Rampart.

And Dungeon theme is good too.

Fortress has endured as my favorite H3 castle no doubt! When the game was still young, I think fortress didn't enjoy near as much popularity as it does these days, as indicated by these poll results and the nostalgia for its uniqueness in the series, which I've noticed is especially H5 fortress-driven!

I used to play Tower and Rampart exclusively. Now I'm really getting into Necropolis, so that's my current pick.

Conflux is a great secondary town.

Also because of the undead disregard for emotions and conscience guiding action.

necropolis and forge, in that order. the rest are target practice(when my Forge project is finished, anyway).

is that the alignment system from WoW? if we were to go into deep analysis of homm3 factions it would be different from what you said. Inferno is an evil organization with an internal hierarchy (Arch, Sultan, Lord) and it should be opposed to Castle => Lawful. Necropolis line up is made of undeads, that is death, and death is chaos and it is opposed to Rampart (the living chaos of nature). So what is left for dungeon is neutral evil. You were right about the enslavement of races part, but it s about their experiments. Medusas, minotaurs, beholders and others are living experiments of the warlocks. They toy with life and create their own army just like mages create golems (gargoyles, iron golems and titans) and ofc, they are in opposition to Tower => Neutral.

and about the neutral towns id give lawful to stronghold and chaotic to fortress

My dad played Necropolis all the time, be it H2, H3, H4, even tried H5.

edit: I think it's the D&D alignment, and to me, Tower isn't Good and Stronghold isn't Evil...

I would say Conflux are the True Neutrals, other than that, factions like Inferno or Necropolis under Sandro could be described as Evil. I don't think Chaotic, Neutral, and Lawful work as well for HoMM, it depends.

hehe, i just found out that it's blizzard alignment, lol

it s a matter of subjectivity here. I dont think Conflux is neutral at all. We all know what they did in AB! they helped the humans and the elves against the demonic invasion. They cant be evil because they fought against them and they cant be neutral since they are taking sides with the Holy Alliance. The devs themselves said that Forge is the evil ending and Conflux the good ending of M&M7 (dont know exactly which M&M). The elementals also created Enroth so that the races could have a place to live in, so their ultimate goal is good and it makes me wonder which faction should be neutral since Conflux is kinda...good. Tower? Cove?

@ dj: is that how the lineup goes? necropolis is opposite rampart?

that makes me wonder. would this be correct?

castle/inferno (good vs evil)
rampart/necropolis (life vs death)
tower/stronghold (magic vs might)
conflux/forge (natural elements vs manufactured machine)

...which leaves...

fortress/dungeon (damned if i know. maybe someone can fill in this blank?)

I understand forge to be the evil ending of MM7, where you mass produce advanced alien technology for a deyja themed faction to take over the world, but how is conflux connected to the good ending where you discover the world you've been playing on is only one of countless others and you now have a free passage way to zounds of those? To me conflux ties more in with the MM8 storyline.

About the whole 9 alignment affair, I think it can be twisted to whatever one likes. E.g. the rivals could also be said to be Tower vs. Necro (good wizard vs. evil wizard), Castle vs. Inferno (heaven vs. hell), finally Rampart vs. Dungeon (good dragons vs. evil dragons perhaps?), finally Stronghold vs. Fortress (offensive vs. defensive). Assuming rivals have one of the two defining alignment treats identical, then I wouldn't mind any of these:

Castle:     LG / NG / CG / CG
Tower:      NG / LG / LG / NG
Rampart:    CG / CG / NG / LG
Dungeon:    CE / CE / NE / LE
Necropolis: NE / LE / LE / NE
Inferno:    LE / NE / CE / CE

With the neurtral towns being Stronghold as chaotic, which is a strong trait of powerful offense, Fortress as lawful, and Conflux true neutral to this world. Which also explains why they went against the invading armies from another world, basically the world defending itself, not taking sides on conflicts within, but defending against invaders.

you have a good point here! but i have to disagree with this:

you re missing one vital information from the game: devils hate angels and titans hate black dragons. From this we can conclude that castle is opposed to inferno and tower is opposed to dungeon, which it leaves rampart to be opposed to necropolis and it kind of makes sense. Gold dragons VS Ghost Dragons (the necromancers of deyja are pretty close to the capital of the elves, AvLee, so they could animate the bones and spirits of the deceased dragons from the graveyards).

i actually didnt play any of the M&M games because they kill my eyes graphically (i know, so sueperficial of me) and M&M 1-5 dont even work on my pc, but i ve tried to read timelines and summaries of events

@Fred: fortress and dungeon dont have anything to do with each other. fortress would be opposed to stronghold because they re in adjacent territories and they have always been at war there are also lizardmen on Regna Island (where pirates are, to which they have always been at war too) so fortress/cove ? you can also see pirate - lizardmen conflicts in the HotA campaign
