The group went back to the corridor and went directly for Marcus' bedroom, once they entered they found a sickly man, his hair and beard longer than usual, stuck in his bed.
-Marcus! This isn't time to be loitering, the castle is being attacked!- Screamed Lucius snickering -Disregard him, brother, look at you, what in the bloody hells happened to you?- The man struggled to sit up in his bed and spoke: -I see... I recognize you two, Lucius and Adrian, I also see some other men I never saw in my life... You... You with the Armet, come to me- -Brother, it's not the time to act like this... It's me, Francis!- -You... You've returned at last... Father would be so happy...- -If I may ask the same question as Adrian, what happened? They told me you were forced to rule the castle...- -Indeed brother, the shackles of the usurper bound me to her service, but I continued to work against her, and this is my prize, a month ago she came here and... She spoke some words and that same night I fell in my bed... I feel like I'm slowly dying...- he coughed, then continued: -I'm happy to see that at least some of my kin is here with me, but I feel an horrible pain... I saw it... Our castle, filled with undead wretch, I fear the same will happen to me, sooner or later...- he then fell on his back on the bed, and started sleeping again...
Lucius then spoke up: -Fiddlesticks! Is he dead?- Adrian then came close to Marcus and answered: -No, he's still alive, for what I can tell, he may smell horribly of sweat, but he doesn't smell of putrefying flesh...- Francis then spoke: -I like how this is our family's prerogative, to sweat profusely... What can we do to help him, besides taking him out of the castle?-

Drago nodded.
- Let's scour the dungeons, maybe we'll find some of his men- He said.
- Before you go, take this-Halfman handed a flask with a faintly glowing liquid.- coat your weapons with it. The blasted undead will be easier to defeat.

Magnus observed the situation on the walls of the besieged castle. The defenders' number was dwindling greatly. The burning pitch did it's work, as well as flaming arrows, of which volley after volley was loosed at the defenders.
The gate was torn down, and a large group of defenders gathered in the gap.
- Now lass! Fire the blasted thing at the gates!- Magnus said to Elena

Modified to burn to the projectiles faster than normal, A volley flew towards the gates, impacting right on target. Multi-coloured smoke filled the entrance and there was plenty of shocked screams coming from within it as the projectiles exploded, thickening the smoke.
"Quickly, load the second charge!" she shouted to Mikolaj, who grabbed it and handed it over. Carefully they placed it in. Igniting it to watch the second salvo fly into the cloud, this time half of them collided with the entrance, bouncing harmlessly off and spraying thin smoke outside it. Either way, the defenders would be softened up or confused enough by now, a charge should be enough to easily break them. She had no intention of following up herself however.

-She will pay for this, I swear it in the name of my family!- Francis screamed in rage: -Let's go then, thank you Halfman, at this point I wouldn't be surprised if we could even find my father...-
The group managed to go in the dungeons pretty easily, the ointment that Halfman gave them was extremely helpful in killing the guards.
There were some familiar faces here and there, some were squires of the Calandries others were guards that nontheless were known in the castle, while in other cells there were criminals.
In the farthest cell there was an old man, balding but with a long beard, shorter than most men and with thin legs, seated on a wooden stool, leaning on a table doing what seemed counting money... with pieces of rags.
-I see a pattern here... I think we have found the other sick man in the castle.- Francis entered the cell. -I understand that I was a lively force here, but still, I thought you all would have been fine, and really, this is a rare vision... I never saw you without money on your hands, Father...-
-Oh, I guess you think I'm having a bad time, counting rags like a mad man? Indeed, it's horrible down there, but still, I do have to maintain my brain fit, else, my son, how could I ever return to my duties when this lunacy ended?-
-You seem pretty lively, I mean, forced into a cell, but still you seem like you didn't ever exit the treasury... And you seem fine?-
-That witch tried to kill me, I wouldn't ever allow somebody to take me before my time, and indeed, unlike what your brothers think I didn't stay in the treasury while the castle was burning. While we are at it, could you please tell your brothers to enter? We need to have a little family reunion.-
Francis gestured his brothers to come, but stopped Dragomir and the others when they wanted to enter: -Just give us some time, we need to see what he wants to tell us.-

- Sure- Drago said.- but first tell me where I can find the keys to the cells here. I bet the locked up squires are itching to get out and take the fight to the enemy if there is anything left to fight.

It looked that the morale of the defenders was broken. Even them being undead didn't help.
- Let's blast em all to pieces- Magnus shouted, as the bowmen loosed another volley of arrows. He lifted his own crossbow and started shooting, encouraging the others to do the same.
Within moments the number of the defenders shrunk even further.
Magnus asked John to lift him onto the giant's shoulders. From this look out point, Magnus was looking through his spyglass.
- bloody good show lads!- He said.- the buggers are no more! But just be sure, ready the trebuchets! Fire on command unless told othervise!- he said as John helped him descend on the ground.

- No matter. What I saw that many of 'em are eitheir dead or heavily injured. Tis be undead. All of 'em. And if ye been listening to Halfman on the subject the buggers never yield. Let's go finish 'em off.

This was a great occasion to try and uncover her machinations, but then somebody talked too much, and I had to convince them that I was actually a prisoner and died of illness here. That meant not being able to roam my castle anymore, and Marcus was actually scolded by that wretched witch, and since then I never saw him again. The guards also became more hostile, and suddenly decided to wear perfume, but, I guess they were just undead abominations, as I saw earlier...- He took a brief pause: -I see that you attacked the castle, were you contacted by my friends? Did they collaborate?-
Francis replied: -No, 'tis is the company I belong to, and the others are the men my brothers managed to raise for this siege. I don't think anybody knew of your connections...- Adrian then continued: -Indeed, we didn't know anything of them, we were actually brought here by his commander, to try and save Marcus.-
Titus then replied: -I see... You've proven useful Francis, at least you're not a complete disappointment, anyway, since we are taking the castle back I guess the war is over?- Francis then said: -What about the barony of the Black Crow?- Titus continued: -What can we do? At least we had a claim here, but not on their territory, we could do that if you decided to marry Guinevre, you bonehead!-
-I think we can arrange that...- Lucius interjected -I mean, we found Guinevre, we found Francis, let them marry and we could free the territory of the Corneille Noire.-
-What about we look for that kid... Arthur, her brother, I mean, he has a claim...- Francis said. Titus slapped Francis again: -Oh, don't you try to escape again, that poor lady fled her home because of you! Don't escape your duty again!- -But Dad!- -No buts! You're going to marry her pronto and we will liberate her barony!- Lucius then said: -She's in your company, how long do you think you can escape this marriage?- Adrian then said: -Besides, what will you miss? It's better to have a wife in this world.- Lucius continued: -Besides... Women are all the same under the belly...- Titus slapped Lucius, then Francis slapped his brother and so did Adrian: -Come on! It's true!- Titus then spoke: -But you aren't a lowlife, such things shouldn't be said by nobles! Anyway, my sons, we have to go, help me get on my throne again and we will arrange the rest...-
To which the brothers replied in unison: -Yes Father!-

"Well, maybe we'll just secure the gate and wait for the signal there... anyway, let me make certain that the way is clear."
John put his shield in front of him and moved forward toward the gate. When he was about ten meters away from the opening a group of defenders came into view and shot a volley of arrows at him. He ducked behind his shield taking no damage whatsoever and just as he raised his head above the shield he saw the figures take cover behind one the wall. The half-giant kept creeping to the gate with his shield at the ready. When he was close to the entrance he raised his massive crossbow and stepped in facing the direction where the archers fled. There was a group of armed men in front of him. They rushed him. He pulled the trigger.
The stories that the Piecemaker could decimate even steel armor turned out to be false. It did not have the piercing power of a crossbow bolt. Neither did it have the destructive power of an enchanted hwacha. But John had to admit it was the scariest anti-personnel weapon he had ever seen.
The first thing that the cloud of arrow splinters did was to knock every on their backs using the incredible force with which they were flying. The second thing John saw was the damage. True, the splinters did not pierce the armor, but it didn't have to. Instead, they penetrated every little gap and tore right through the enemy flesh. Leather and other light armor was complete useless. So was chainmail as the splinters went through the rings. Everyone on the ground were covered in what constituted for blood in the undead beings. Most of them were blind because the splinters got into the eye gaps of their helmets. John realized that if any of them would be alive and survived the shot, they would have been in agony right now. And even though the undead don't feel pain, the guards just lay on the ground, shocked and trying blindly to get some use of their shredded arms. All that was left to do was go from one to another and smash their hearts. Which is what John was doing when the rest of the assault force caught up with him.

I got to work immediately and unlocked every cell in the room. Nothing really special about it, except one iron door which I just couldn't seem to open. It was thick and sturdy, so it must've had something interesting behind it. Family secrets, I guess.

- Anyone caught looting well receive 25 lashes and will have his rations cut to a quarter for a month!- Magnus shouted as he and the others poured into the inner yard of the castle. There were a lot of maimed bodies, but many were still alive thanks to the magics of necromancy.
Drago noticed that Francis and his kin were done talking, and were heading this way.
- You've done? good. They're no longer throwing stones or firing upon the castle, so it means the undead garrison is done for. judging from the noise upstairs, the company's here. I'd better go on and check on them.
His eye turned to Lord Titus.
- Also, my lord, we are not measly mercenaries. Francis is a member of the Last Free Comapany, and we are cut from a different cloth than the lousy sellswords the Miner's Guild employs. I'll see you all in the throne room- He said and departed to the yard.

Elena grabbed Guinevre's shoulder as she started to move towards the castle. "Wait. You never know how many are left alive and i'd rather not take any chances. You're not moving in there until I'm certain it's safe. You and Mikolaj will help me get this back to camp" She said, gesturing to the Hwacha. "Wouldn't want to lose new recruits to some freak snow playing dead"

Dragomir was walking past the throne room when he noted Isabella sitting on the throne
- You might wish to stand up and leave the blasted thing vacant. It's owner is on it's way.- He said as he walked towards the exit.
Outside he saw the company desposing of the corpses. they were thrown into a large pile, and there were several containers full of pitch, ready to set ablaze the pile of corpses.

Dragomir- Titus uttered trying to recall the name of the commander -Don't you know it's not pleasant to know that your conversations are overheard? And by the way, he's my son, I can call him whatever I want, the little rascal has always given me problems... Until today, he has proven his worth once in his life...-
Francis whispered to Dragomir: -Don't mind him, he tends to hide these things in public actually, he's just extremely proud of himself and would want me and my brothers to be more like him... But normally he doesn't speak so lowly of us in public, let's just say you made him say that...- He then started snickering beneath his moustache.
-Ah, it's good to see my seat again, we call it the "Throne" because I spent a lot of money on it, but it surely makes a dramatic effect on the visitors.- Titus said as he seated on his throne, then continued: -I trust your men cleaned up these rotten abominations, where is my son Marcus?-
-But I want to see Francis... Is he okay?- Guinevre said to Elena.

- It was by no means intentional, as milord's voice was echoing through the whole dungeon.- Drago said.- Your remaining son is in his chambers in this very keep. As we speak, our resident Samann wizard is lifting a curse which was placed on him by the 'duchess'. It'll take some time to complete. The remains of the undead garrison are being prepared for mass cremation and my officers are overseeing it.
