That's not surprising - who's still dating after 40? Divorcees and women who haven't yet found a long-term relationship. (I'm excluding polyamorous people because there are so few of them.) That's different from the population of single women at 25-30, and I'd expect them to be less desirable on average (and not just because of their age).

My dear, you appear confused with biology. Male sperm doesn't carry all the cells needed to create life, it needs to fuse with the egg carried inside the woman. Those two fusing then start the building blocks of life. So no, it never has been M = No.1 and W = No.2 at all.
There is no such thing as self fertilization in humans. Tut tut, silly boy. Put the Dunce's cap on and go and sit on the silly billy chair.

I don't know about America (probably less as a majority there are religious and conservationists), but in Europe it is very common to be single/divorced at 40, I would say 70% from total. From all the people I know, only a very few made it past 10-15 years marriage, as the family as foundation of the society is obsolete. This has nothing to do with being less desirable, people are under new social pressures and have harder and harder time to get along, accept the other, become happy.
No surprising, seeing how all solid and long time established moral values are being constantly pulverized: Islam impact, gay marriage, genders confusion, white race culpability and so on. Basically today everything is done to make the normal person feel guilty.
