Happy Birthday, Heroes! =)

Hello guys and girls!
Allow me to disrupt the heated debates in beta-discussion thread a little. I would like to take a pause and say a "Happy Birthday" to the Heroes of Might and Magic (I will call it such in spite of rebrending), the series of strategy games that we all love and like, no matter whether we agree on it's current path or not. This "franchise within franchise" has captured our hearts and holds sway over them for 20 years now. I'm sure that majority here discovered Heroes in their childhood and mostly likely remember the countless hours they spent with their friends on the hotseat, or the epic adventures of such legendary characters as Roland and Archibald, Gelu and Gem, Crag Hack and Yog, Sandro and Gauldoth, Solmyr and Emilia... I can go on and on, for our dear Heroes have many, many remarkable characters, I just listed those I like, feel free to mention your own favorites.

Our "fanbase" is, without the doubt, one of the most dedicated and difficult one to handle. We have many "factions": the Ancients, who remember the game from the very beginning of the Strategic Quest and I doubt visit fansites anymore, the old-timers who're in love with H2, a legion of fans debating "which is the best: H3 or H5", a small faction that take H4 seriously, and, of course, numerous newcomers. I believe we can include developers as well, whether past or current, for I highly doubt that they created Heroes (even such as H4 or H6) without passion. We're many, we're very different, but what unites us is the love for Heroes.

I mean, hell, even if at the moment we're considered to be a "niche", can you point to any other franchise where there're people such as:
1) Galaad, Sempai and all others "Sandro revolutionaries"? Not all will agree with me ofc, but these guys do what they do with pure and good intentions, even if their methods are not welcomed by all of us.
2) "Fan developers" which give us almost full-fledged addons (HotA, WoG, NCF to name a few) years after game release and still continue their work?
3) Lore Hounds (both of the Old and New universies) who dug up every tiny little detail about the game?
4) All of the fans who remained with the franchise and did not abandon it after two cataclysms (!!!): H4 (after which 3DO exterminated itself) and H6 (it may be commercial success, yes, but to us it's not the main issue)?
5) Guys like Stevie, who, while being very dissapointed with the current state of H7, still test the Beta (remember who played the first Beta longer than anybody else? =P), still post the bugs?
6) Last but not least, such guys as Verriker, Lighty and JEmo? ^^

I wish Heroes a long life, stable developers (not new one every installment), healthy fanbase and the return of times when TBS were popular, thus, AAA budget!

To the fans: let's live long enough to see Heroes of Might and Magic X! And I wish you Epic (and Enchanting) Battles of Strategy and Honor!

To the devs: "Do or do not. There's no try".

EDIT: to the mods: I would like to propose an amnisty today for all those wro're banned. Return JEmo. ^^

P.S.: Yup, it's a big wishful thinking full of naivety + a bit of realism, but that's what "Happy Bithdays" are meant to be. ^^
P.P.S.: Sorry for not-so-good English.

It was for Ubisoft and Ubisoft alone.

Ah, what a wild ride it has been. From my 'first contact' with the Heroes-franchise around 2004, up until this very day, there has been many an hour dedicated to playing one of the glorious instalments, starting with Heroes III. I'm not going to recite the entire poem I wrote for the Fanday Challenge, because I feel like I shouldn't bother all of you with it, but I suppose a brief summary would be in order .

What is there to say when it's not done with artful words and epic rhymes? I never knew H1 and 2, it all started with 3. Then there was 4, even my bro played it. 5 was a breath of fresh air, and 6? A stranger from distant lands, but that is one of the Seven Works of Mercy: to shelter the stranger. Unless you want to use H6 for another Work of Mercy: burying the dead .

Those were (mostly) campaign heroes, but I have favorites outside that too.

For H3: Piquedram, Aislinn.
For H4: Baron von Tarkin.
For H5: Raelag, Zehir (before the voice change), Markal.
For H6: Anastasya, Sandro.

Just a few, but my list can go on and on too here xD.

I'd call us titans, because then we can label each debate as a true "Clash of the Titans". Although currently I feel like "Wrath of the Titans" will suit the majority quite fine too....

Oh, the joy that is SC/HC . Part of me wishes I had never logged in here and at the SC, to remain in blissful unawareness of basically everything that has happened on both platforms. Hate, rage, discussions, agreements and what not. Yet the other part of me is glad to have found its way into this community. At least it gives a much better and more concrete view of where our differences lie. And differences is what it is all about. We are different yet similar, for there is one thing binding us together: we all think what is best for the franchise. Heroes of Might and Magic is built on opinions and visions, those of the devs and those of the fans. And opinions are bound to clash . And the part of me that is glad to have joined is also glad for the reason to be able to share opinions, even if they are not always met with approval by fellow fans .

IMO, no game can be the best, for there will always be a handful that says it should be otherwise. For 20 years we've been busy, and there will be no end to it. Well...until the end of the franchise.

In that respect I'm glad to not feel emotionally attached to either one of the Heroes games. All of them, except 1 and 2 which I do not know, are good in their own ways. I play them because they have elements which I find worth spending time on . 3, because of the oldschool look, music and overall atmosphere. 4, because of the Hero's role, different mechanics and the like. 5, for its art, the stories, the interaction between characters. 6, again for the visuals, and for the bucketload of innovations never seen before.

Some elements are important in every one of them, such as the music. Where other elements fail, the music shines bright. Heroes of Might and Magic / Might and Magic Heroes is a series I have kept even when I uninstalled nearly every other game I own. And that's for a reason. It's because I like it, it grew on me. So, a little emotional attachment there, admitted. Now you're prolly wondering: "Marble, if that is so, then why won't you make sure you can play H7 properly? What kind of fan are you? Buy a new pc already ". I will play H7 someday, don't worry. Until then, the Collector's Edition will be kept safe and secure.

One day...

So yes, Happy Birthday to Heroes . Many thanks to JVC who brought us the first half. Thanks to the members on this forum and beyond, whose industriousness has kept the games shining bright with mods, tournaments and such. Thanks to Ubisoft for giving us 5, 6 and 7. It's an honor to share the passion for these games with you all. And despite everything, all our differences, I love you all .

Happy Birthday, little sunshine, Heroessss, my love.

Although you got cancer, your life until today may be still remembered by those who remember. I hope your last days or years don't make you suffer much more and you won't become a stupid thick adult with a serious case of slow thinking.

Heroes was one of the first games that I've played. I remember that it was Heroes 2, and we played on my friends computer (I didn't owe one then) and I sucked I think I was 10 years old back then, and I loved to play with warlocks (Dragons ). And here I am, 18 years later, still playing Heroes 2 , and 3, 4 and 5. I'm sad to see what happened with my game with Heroes 6 and 7. I still hope that future will be better, but only time will tell.

Happy birthday, old friend
