Meanwhile, nobody bothers to station 2 cops in permanence at each school.

If you pay each cop 2500 dollar a month for 120.000 us schools then your solution costs: 7.2 Billion dollar a year.

But those two cops already patrol the area and drink coffee while munching on a donut anyways, so it wouldn't cost any more from the government. Not talking about hiring 2 extra cops per school, merely relocating 2.

Well, it is sad to hear there are currently 240.000 cops in America who could better sit in a schoolyard all day than doing what they are currently doing.

I don't think that's at all fair towards cops: the idea that the average cop spends all day doing nothing is simply completely made up. As for cops shooting people, it's unfortunate, but it's an inevitable symptom of a country that is grossly overarmed and grossly obsessed with firearms for protection (which is pointless since it simply makes everything more dangerous).

Criminals (serious criminals) in the US are armed. They're not in a lot of other places, but they are here, because guns are everywhere and they're poorly monitored. If you're a flesh & blood human being with a nervous system, and you have a job where you know there's a significant chance somebody that you're dealing with is armed, there are going to be more fatalities and more jumpy reactions from the police. There is nobody here that can truthfully claim they would do much better in the same position. There simply will be. It's not something that is ever, ever going to go away until the firearm addiction subsides and the US sobers up, or until we replace flesh & blood police with Robocop. One of the two.

Regularly posting soldiers/cops in schools or arming teachers would be indescribably pathetic. I would take pictures so I could someday laugh with my grandchildren about how stupid we were in my generation.

I wasn't joking ( this time ! ). Cops, Firemen, etc, it's an unsteady job. Some days you're gonna be called upon. You can also not be called upon for two weeks straight. The nature of those jobs requires people to sit on their butts and wait until they're needed. That's just how it is. Those two cops could always be called on a scene if the need arise.

To some extent: yes, moreso true for firefighters than police (seasonally, I did outdoor firefighting this past summer for cash & fun). Your average cop, although maybe not always having a "full day" of work, still has some routines to do. If you're doing absolutely nothing but are "on call" you're not being paid until you're on the job (and then you're getting paid around the clock, including during a 3 day trip to Alaska with restaurants & taverns all along the way).

That is like saying US soldiers should not be armed because enemy soldiers will have arms and the US soldiers may not see the enemies coming.

If a jihadist or maniac enters a room where you are feel free to curl up into a ball and sob until he blows your head off. But don't demand that such a response is the only one that a person should have available. I'll take my chances and pull out my gun and exercise my right to self-defense.

@blizzardboy: I was only pointing out the implication of kaynas post, not saying it is true.

Police will always get many small calls and also entirely pointless calls. After a while a ratio cop/population can be found at which they will always have work to do.

Oh, and "gun free" zones are shooting galleries for mass murderers.  Most mass shootings occur in gun free zones.

Such as churches. Church shootings are way too common but strangely underreported.
