For This Metal, Electricity Flows, But Not the Heat

ICE +1, but can someone explain to me this stuff
Quote:
“The electrons were moving in unison with each other, much like a fluid, instead of as individual particles like in normal metals,” said Wu. “For electrons, heat is a random motion. Normal metals transport heat efficiently because there are so many different possible microscopic configurations that the individual electrons can jump between. In contrast, the coordinated, marching-band-like motion of electrons in vanadium dioxide is detrimental to heat transfer as there are fewer configurations available for the electrons to hop randomly between.”

Notably, the amount of electricity and heat that vanadium dioxide can conduct is tunable by mixing it with other materials. When the researchers doped single crystal vanadium dioxide samples with the metal tungsten, they lowered the phase transition temperature at which vanadium dioxide becomes metallic. At the same time, the electrons in the metallic phase became better heat conductors. This enabled the researchers to control the amount of heat that vanadium dioxide can dissipate by switching its phase from insulator to metal and vice versa, at tunable temperatures.
Is it somehow connected to the so-called high-temperature superconductors stuff

As always, in the article is lot of nonsense about commercial use, and low info about what the hell is this "heat conductivity, electron conductivity" and Wiedemann-Franz law.

I'd plagiarize myself and say the same thing which I said in another topic on the matter - if the world did not have the properties that it has, there would be no mathematics. You need something perceivable to wrap you mind around at first before you can drill down in abstractions.

Mathematics as a "science" actually isn't interested in the "real world". It's the sciences of the real world that found, mathematics can be used as a tool to describe stuff - and can actually be devleloped for that purpose.
Our mathematics are axiomatic, and the axioms (or the sets of them that are used) are inventions of the human mind (modern mathematics work different than the mathematics of old). Everything else is of course "discovered" in the sense that it's consequences of those axioms (that have to be proven).

There is quite probably a similarity between the real world and mathematics insofar that the real world might be "axiomatic" as well. The thing, however is, that there isn't just one mathematics, there are a lot of them.

Here is an easy example: Euclidian geometry. This is based on 5 axioms (and everything else follows out of those 5). However, for a long time there was doubt about the parallel axiom: through a point outside a line there is exactly ONE parallel. It was thought that this one might follow from the first 4 somehow (could be proven out of them). Ultimately, though, it can't, because if you change that axiom, the mathematics change: through a point outside a line there are INFINITE parallels! In this case you get hyperbolic geometry (triangle angle sums are less than 180 degrees). You can also say, there is NO parallel, and if you  throw out the axiom that a line can be extended indefinitely, you get elliptic geometry with triangle angle sums bigger than 180 degrees - which is, however, just a special case of the Riemann geometry.

So changing your set of axioms changes the mathematics, and basically mathematics is the set of all axiomatic systems using the mathematical language you can come up with.
The most baffling thing has been that you can prove that every complex mathematical system contains "truth" that cannot be proven (that is, the answer to question cannot be decided). Which would mean, that IF there was a structural similarity between the real world and mathematics, there would be things in the real world as well that cannot be decided/proven.

I have doubts about that.

Zenofex, JollyJoker -

Hello uncle Karl, again?

I don't think that such "materializing of Mathematics" is good.

1) Materialist guys few decades ago denied Heisenberg' Quantum Stuff, and Genetics, because those Science was "not materialistic enough" .

2) Idealistic guys, denied Einstein-relativity stuff, because those Science was not enough ideal like their "science" .

3) They both have a similar ideologies, in general, and they both have made a similar mistake.

To expose the Mathematics as a "only a tool" it is an unreal foolishness, <imho>. But the same I will say, if you will express the Mathematics as "the Whole frigging World".

1) You cannot say that the Mathematics is just a tool, because the non-zero possibility exist, for an example: In the World exist the insane numbers of Universes, our Universe including, that orchestrated by the Mathematics, every atom, every electron, every Galaxy, etc. - the all this stuff is defined, the every minute of life of this stuff is defined by the Mathematics. In this case, our World will looks like a bucket of an axioms and the results. And the Mathematics, actually will be our World.

2) You cannot say, that the Mathematics is the whole World, and was in the beginning, etc, etc. Why? This is simple - you cannot check it for truth. Because in this case you will need a toys, that can make observation far-beyond so-called "Plank'-volume" or even more... .

So I think both of your ideas, guys - sux. Of course, Mathematics is using as a tool, by the guys, but this is not automatically means, that a things is going on in such way.

Yes, but it's also interesting that the end of the article is coming round to commercial interests in publishing fake news - which means, it's back to step 1: nothing is inconceivable as long as it may be profitable.

The current situation, that RF has a lot amount of a skilled hackers, and computer scientists is not a result of the "work" of the RF government, education programs to computer science, or something like that, this is more likely result of the economical crisis after SU self-disbanded, but of course, I think the government will use this "resource".

His name and title were listed in the White House directory, for instance. - Washington Post’s ‘Fake News’ Guilt

*faceplam*, no comments.

This Robert Parry is no doubts a heroic investigator, a the true hero of the spy-games , a non-defeated legend he is.
About situation in the RoU - <imo> the situation in the RoU is a very difficult and a very dangerous. The author of the article, of course possessed some facts (of course he show only surface nonsense, but in general he point of view is not far from a truth. imho), along with that, the author expressed only a single, one-sided point of view, so this facts is almost totally useless to the any normal analytic, again - <imo>.

Simple - the article is nonsense. The article has been made by a guy, that a full bucket of a social protection, sitting in his comfort chair, and "bored" by his life, so he decided to play into "spy games" *facepalm". A friggin disneyland of the one man it is, the article looks like "two-layer" propaganda itself.
Perhaps some specialist can find the interesting facts there, but his facts is obviously will be curved due "world expression" of the author, and must be cleaned if you want to read about something interesting. When I am thinking about propaganda, I think the W. Post is a total n00bs - some a very good examples come into my mind:

North Korea Lands First Ever Man On The Sun, Confirms Central News Agency

The friggin Nicaragua, Neo-McCarthy, etc, cmon guys, what a noobish skill, I know you can be better Who will read such boring nonsense nonsense when we have a first man on the friggin Sun!  facepalm...
Or this one is also very good...

This is a really weird action of US-guys, but as always there is some reasons for that. What about EU reaction, it is predictable imho, and both EU and US well aware about that.
In general, is a sign of no good things - imho , but perhaps I am too pessimistic in this case.

Btw it is not an "interesting article" just a newsline.

Me too, but that was just before we find that Fillon -the candidate praising "honesty" above all, used public funds to pay about 1,5 millions euros to his wife for fixing 3 of his speeches and other minor stuff, for which he couldn't provide any proofs about. So now he is facing justice and will most likely drop the presidential run in the next days.

Researchers have isolated the brain circuitry that coordinates predatory hunting, according to a new study. Impressive, another wonder of human intellect in the process of discovering Nature. But I feared about the ways in which such kind of technologies can be used... But perhaps I am too pessimistic at all .
