Architecturalism

I would really want to see what kind of architectural wonders are out there in the world. So, what kind of pictures of buildings do you have to share? Does it have any notable past?

Here's the famous national theater in my city.

Apparently, about 110 years ago, some students have revolted against a lord (so to speak), just as the construction of the theatre was finished. They even burned a flag of Hungary, which was atop the theater, for that Hungarian lord wanted everyone to speak Hungarian, rather than our own mother language (among other things). The rebellion made the political forces chase them away, all the way to Austria and Czechoslovakia, at that time.

Can we also link architectures we are ashamed of?

Opera Garnier, Paris:

And now, compare to Opera in Lyon;

Well anything that is notable, that is. Even something ugly can be notable.

Hm, the Lyon one looks more modern. But that's basically the stuff that gets constructed in these years, I say, to reduce the costs.

Yeah, "modern" is now the word we use when we don't know how to fix stuff.

Jesus, that Lyon opera looks totally disproportionate on the outside, and the inside looks like something from a horror movie.

Around where I live, I guess this is one of the more famous buildings.

Not anywhere near where I live, but one of my favorite buildings in the world:

The opera house in Lyon is not modern but rather post-modern, trying to combine two different styles with an eclectic approach. I wouldnt say it's successful at doing that but it's not a complete disaster. The old opera house in Lyon can be called modern (in style), especially compared to the 1861 building from Paris. I think the old Lyon building is better than the new one:

Most of the good looking buildings in Belgrade were destroyed during WW I and WW II (thanks to both Axis and Allies ), but some are remaining.

There are a lot of excellent buildings in Lithuania, most of them are religious buildings (catholic and orthodox churches)

One of the most beautiful pieces of Gothic Architecture in our capital Vilnius.

St. Anne's church. built in 1500. There's also a little legend that Napoleon was really impressed by the church, that he wished to take it back to Paris.

We also have some wooden mosques, but I can't find any hd pics of them. In total we have 4, 3 wooden and one brickbuilt.
Here's a pic of the brick mosque, built in my home town.

Ah, quite nice.

This is the place where a lot of theatrical performances and concerts are held. Nothing wrong with this place, quite elegant in certain spaces. However, it's sad that some buildings around it are deserted. Probably junkie dens or something. What's even more sad is they are deserted for more than 25 years or such.

The building in OP is in the middle of a gorgeous historicist square. So, I accept Salamandre's suggestion and post a building that I'm ashamed of.

This is Academy of Music in Zagreb, and it has been marring the abovementioned square for two years now. The students complimented its technical aspects, and it is fine when you're on the inside, but on the outside... yuk...

Btw, EnergyZ, are there any plays or operas currently in HNK that you'd recommend? I sadly have never been inside, and should fix that.

This Tuesday the "Three Wives" are going to play there. It could be worth watching.

Anyway, this is not from my city, but it is quite mind blowing.

This is my birthplace's castle. Unfortunately most of the ancient architecture of the city either was submerged by mount Etna (I still love you Mongibeddu), or crumbled during the catastrophic earthquake of the XVII century (It did gift us a huge baroque wealth however).

As for the eyesores, I have given it much thought and I say this is just bad. It's the headquarters for the TV and radio media called HRT, which has one of the most dominant channels in this country.

Sad thing is, I pass by there nearly every day.

Ok, this is not from where I live, it's the Kansas City Library, but it just had to be here. You can say the idea isn't very creative, even a shallow cliche but it still looks so lovely anyway.

I actually like the interior of the Lyons opera house. It's very sleek. Like an onyx.

The ugliest architecture I've ever seen is in Warsaw. At least the 20th century architecture.
