cleglaws inferno mod

hi everyone.

as some of you know, i was playing around with some sketches for a while.. but now i decided to go serious about this. i will no longer work alone. in animation+3d objects stage(late stage) i have 2 volunteer friends to help with me to make this into a mod. currently im still painting town screen but as soon as i finish this, they will join me to make it acctually live and playable... so i thought to myself, why wont i introduce this to you by a new topic, dedicated to this: "cleglaws inferno mod"

this gif shows my progress. i spent something like 18hours in last 3 days. before that i just only had sketches of a few buildings.





i plan to update this topic every week to share progress by editing this post.

main purpose of me opening this topic, is to get feedbacks/opinions/suggestions from you and sometimes maybe even getting help in technical questions i may have... this is my first attempt to make a mod and i dont know much about technical stuff.



about concept

-alien demons who enslave, torture and use ashans everything to their selfish needs.
-they have some mechanical knowladge. they(acctually most of the time their "slaves") build  mechanical portals and call more demons. mechanical portals are enabling traves across planets so they are much more complicated then regular portals. this is the logic behind them.
-a realistic look... as realistic as it can get. i dont like cartoony style that h7 town screens have. in the end i want flowing rivers, moving clouds and other stuff like that combined with photorealistic view. the way i see it, h3 had a realistic approach to its time and i like them very much.
-they are colorful... as i see, community doesnt want to see %99 percent red-black with inferno anymore. personally i agree with that. after seeing Zdzislaw Beksinski's works, i believe in this more.

I have been working on Inferno a bit for Ashan to the trashcan mod, already got most of creatures. I believe that it would be better to join forces if you want. Just that I won't be able to acess my pc for 2 weeks at least.

i acctually tried to avoid that. seems like i emailed instead of properly using Hc messenger(offline user/online user confusion).

nevertheless, thats indeed quite an achievement lol.

I do like it. but can I recommend you do some buildings bigger/more noticeable and try and fill out the area? right and left upper corners are annoyingly empty. and I think the little building furthest to the left could probably stand on the mountain in the background.

try and use all the available space and some building don't take up the appropriate amount of it.

i was thinking same, but it seemed like a minor issue to me. now that you mention it, i do take it as a important problem.

for the left corner i got 2 ideas, i will eventually end up choosing one.

1-maybe bigger mountain in left? that smoking building will turn into a resource providing building, so it may be logical for it to have a bigger mouintainback... or maybe on it as you suggested.

2-as a warfare unit, im thinking of adding worm. as for its building, i thought maybe it eats up mountains by digging tunnels here and there? so a mountainside full of tunnels and a cnnected building to it.. may fill that left corner.(this idea may apply to different part of town screen. maybe in center mountain, thats a possiblity too)



for right corner, i have two options currently and i hope one of them works good.

1- make a ruinlike special magical area, and identify it as one of the special buildings to inferno. then, maybe it shoots beams to sky or some effect like that to pierce through clouds.. openning a map of stars in sky, visible to our sight. after all they are aliens right? maybe i can connect this to concept somehow. didnt thought on this much yet.

2-or maybe just make it empty lol. that right side may serve as a depth increasing landscape to townscreen. laying mountains, forests and stuff like lays down till horizon meets the sky.

or maybe you guys have better ideas?


btw about sizes...
in current version some buildings are indeed bigger/more noticeable now(juggernaut +efreet buildings). i also try to enlarge buildings when i cant scale them. for instance walls+castle part growing bigger and more complicated. i like how far they are so instead of scaling them, im adding more part to it.

btw, if everything goes good with my life, i ll move on to making every factions town screens, including sanctuary. you see, i like this whole thing! its a perfect hobby for me and it acctually gains me some skillz architecture meets painting meets game developing. its like a dream job heheh.

If it's any help, try segmenting the picture into 9 areas: foreground, midground and background and left, center and right. that way you have 9 squares that all needs a building., making sure no area is empty.
This is probably the biggest problem with the H7 screen: there is a lot of dead areas with nothing important on them while some areas are too packed with stuff.

Buildings also don't stand out or look important enough much of the time (sylvan is particularly bad at this) where some important buidings like champ dwellings are overshadowed by stuff like the resource silo or just civil buildings. Avoid this as much as possible and make sure buildings related to each other stay close/linked too each other.

I'm sorry to open my mouth when I don't have the smallest clue on modding, but shouldn't that be quite easy? I mean, aren't the Sanctuary and Inferno factions aready done in HOMM6 with the same engine as HOMM7? It should be easier to implement them, or am I wrong?

I'm not in much better situation than you are as regards modding new creatures As I have understood, there are some problems with animations (check the modding thread for details).

I am looking forward to Sanctuary one - my favourite! Also if you could manage to do TS also for "swamp fortress" that would be nice

No, this isn't correct. For HoMM6, they used a game engine they developed inhouse. For HoMM7, they used an Unreal Engine (3 I believe?). They can port over the textures and models relatively easily, as I understand it, but the animations basically have to be redone from scratch. And that's not a trivial thing to do, if I understand LizardWarrior correctly.
