Poll Question:
Favorite set of campaigns

Which set do you like best and why, ranging from Heroes I to III and HotA?

I have to say I am still really fond of the Succession Wars, both Roland and Archibald had really nice dialogue and pretty decent missions and they really felt like you are going through a war, having two choices which mission to take at times, and even the choice to betray your king.

Maybe it's nostalgia, but out of these, I'd definitely pick the SW.

Arma because it felt complete somehow. Dungeon skirmishes, rampart guerilla, epic fortress, inferno and haven, magic-focused, dragon-slaying tower.. (Screw Kilgor's campaign though) Roe and H1 were simple and while I loved SoD it had some pretty annoying designs. Hota was literally an a-hole campaign, meant to annoy, harrass, troll you or all of those combined One hell of a challenge though. H2 was pretty good and optional missions was a great idea but didn't have much of a story. Sod and Arma are far superior in that respect.

I agree for the most part, except ... screw Kilgor's campaign? Why is that?

First sin, kill neutrals mission, just neutrals. Second sin, you are stuck with 3 secondaries that you don't choose and losing one ends the campaign. Both pretty terrible ideas.

Succession Wars for me, I never actually finished any campaign in HIII at the exception of Dungeons and Devils and the Krewlod-Tatalia campaign.
The story of Succession War may be a classic fantasy tale, but I loved the slow climb you had to perform as the followers of Roland to reclaim the crown, or the various tasks to fully subjugate Enroth as the general of Archibald. Although I have to admit I loved turning on them as well.

Plus I love the magic gameplay in HII more, so I arrived at points where I maniacally laughed at the end of some maps.

Well, I can agree on the not being able to choose your secondaries. That sucks pretty bad. However, the kill neutrals mission isn't so bad, because you're fighting a time-limit, rather than an active AI.

I would vote for all Chronicles if available, given the options Armageddon's Blade for sure, I felt the difficulty was a nice step-up from RoE back in the day of release

Warlords of the Wastelands. Yes, this one in particular. Not all Chronicles, they were mostly average or below.

But this one gives you a hero you actually connect to, a story that sucks you in, and many mature themes that make this even more fun. The mission where you slaughter innocent peasants fleeing from Tarnum's rebellion is unforgettable.

I will review everything else in detail in my HoMM3 thread I'm about to make soon.

Annoyance wise (usually tied to difficulty):

Price of Loyalty > Hota > Shadow of Death > The World Tree > HoMM 2 >  Homm 1 > Armageddon's Blade > Chronicles (other than World Tree) > RoE.

Special mention for "re-rolling the heroes" in Shadow of Death's "Unholy Alliance". Seriously? They couldn't actually implement a mechanism to pass heroes from campaign to campaign, instead you get a high level hero with random skills like Learning or First Aid? Forcing you to restart till you get a workable skillset? Thanks but no thanks! Never again!

Atleast Heroes 5 allow to build up your heroes, and even transfer experience and stats if you change class(like Ornella in TOE)

I would prefer Level 1 heroes, but with all +stat boosters from their respective campaings.

I never understood this either. It's fairly easy to fix, if you ask me, though it could end up annoying as well if you're restarting all the time. The fix would be to present the player with level-up screens as if the player is leveling the Hero from level 1 up to the level the Hero starts at, if not carried over from another mission.

They could've also modified the way "carry-overs" work - hell, it was their game. It's not like they were WoG/Hota modders. They had the source code...

It should be fairly trivial to code such a thing.

I disagree with this solution, because it lacks all the stat boosters and spells.

Naah, those campaigns were unrelated to the earlier ones thus thatís not easily done in the system thatís set up for H3. Firstly, theyíd have to save after a campaign. Which they donít do. Secondly if you have multiple finished campaigns those contradict or overwrite each other. Thirdly, You as a player would have to replay the whole campaign to get a new hero.

Personally I had most fun with Gelu, Mutare, Sandro, Gem, The Fire Witch and the Krewlod-Tatalia war. Points for both Heroes 2 and Price of Loyalty for the multipronged campaign progression, that was a great leap to take(which has been proven faulty later.) It gave an illusion of real importance for your choices.

By far the best one out of these is the Stronghold-Fortress war. Bringing up both sides and then making you pick a side and throwing you at the other side was much better execution than Heroes 2 approach. It still has the same problem that you have to load a mid campaign save to go back to play the toher maps but the connection to the other side is much better.

Shipwrecked was also fun.

In general good custom maps are just better than campaigns so campaigns have to give you an overarching storyline to compensate and most heroes campaigns absolutely suck at delivering this to the player. Heroes 4 did better than others.

Armageddons blade was such a hit and miss. SoD was all around solid aside from few stupidities. RoE was pretty meh in hindsight. Heroes 1/2/PoL I have no recollection of having fun with the campaigns, it was all just how to best cheese the map so those fail by default.

I wouldnít really want to play most of them again. Itís just running after AI pest heroes like thwomping digglets. I think I would rather play Sanderís folly.^^

EDIT: Level restrictions on your Heroes, REALLY?
Also maybe completionist but the need to visit every stat booster/max all the guilds on the map because not doing so hurts you later in the campaign...
...even that one +1 knowledge gives you two more slows or a lightning bolt for that start of five goblins so itís massive with level capped heroes.

And just hiring heroes you know have a chance to carry elves for the next map start...
...or a few basilisks.

It truly doesnít translate well to such a prolonged format. The only real positive being the power of Gurnisson at level 20 with expert Artillery without an army. ^^

How about heroes with 800 mana and SP 40+ with Summon Elemental in HotA campaigns?

Now that's just the "I win button". Nothing can stop you from day 1.

I knew doom would bring up the random heroes Good lord, so many reloads. Probably simplest solution would be manual levelling at the beginning of the mission.

If we are to get into campaign specifics.. Really enjoyed most in sod, esp Gem, Gelu and Sandro. Yog was also fun for its gameplay challenge but screw Crag. Cover of darkness everywhere, enemy towns you cannot access, one way near town so you can be invaded weekly as you explore. Basterds. Gem was hard but not.. annoyingly so.

In AB I quite enjoyed Arma campaign for map layout, short to large scale combat and seeing both sides. Adrienne obviously Mutare had such fun skirmish missions and Drakon was interesting if anything else. Christian's missions take the cake though, they were both hilarious and hardcore. That last mission man! Certainly a much better conclusion than Sandro's final missions in SoD.

The biggest problem with Arma was that the whole Armageddon blade campaign series is kind of bad. Why are your secondary campaigns so much better than the main one!

That is the thing with carryover heroes, if you have a good ballista or spells you breeze through everything.

Joonas, time to do the ballbreaking Hota "Terror of the Deep" mission 2 on Impossible difficulty. gogogo! And have fun with that ****ing Alkin. You'll see what frustration feels, lol. I mean, it's obviously possible to beat (since both Elvin and me beat it) but yeah... we cursed a lot during the playthrough.

And as usual, I urge anyone wanting to get brutalized to play "Descendants" campaign from Price of Loyalty and go for the SCEPTER in the penultimate mission rather than Elven alliance. Have fun with respawning heroes with dimension door and 100 mana that are back 1 turn after getting killed, with a full pop and DD'ing towards your nearest crap city.
