another novel idea of mine... !!

In my experience, having internalized the formulae of the original HoM&M and appreciated the evolved adaptations of HoMMV, if HoMMVIII is ever to be made, it could benefit from a new statistical system, explained as follows:

How about merging the attack and defense rating of each Hero, into a single, novel to the series... COMBAT rating! So each hero has 3 basic quantitative values: Combat; Spellpower; and Knowledge. Not a fundamental change, but more of an evolution of the HoMMV design, for the sake of even better game-play. Blending the contrast between Might and Magic Heroes, where combat would be the Might skill, Spell-Power the Magic skill, And Knowledge as Mixed/Miscellaneous.

I will reference an earlier topic, one that I liked:

Is using the Knowledge stat for spell learning a bad idea?
http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?TID=45902

It would be further evolution upon HoMMV, wherein there are a variety of Might Heroes, Magic Heroes, and Mixed Heroes.

This could streamline the Heroes Formula, and ease the excessive complexity which plagies the series(after HoMM3).

For HoMMVIII to become viable, the tbs would have to be streamlined and intuitive, like HoMM1. The redundant complexities of HoMMV and HoMMVI would have to be reduced and transformed into depth... and intuitiveness - like how popular HoMM3 is to this day - a good quality for a strategy game. Such a compromise would permit the fabled tbs to attract a broader fan-base; and more customers!

What do you think?

I understand what you want to do with it. I personally would actually rather see the hero stats diversified more, than merged into 3. But thats my taste, mainly. Depends on the hero role in the battle mainly.

I think that sounds almost exactly like Ubi's reasoning behind their "innovations" to H6. H5 isn't redundantly complex. I've been playing it since I was 6 or 7 and while I obviously wasn't a master strategist, I could understand how it worked enough to beat most of the campaign on easy mode.

Same for me. I already think the game is so ... streamlined already. Since ... ever? H4 added battle stats to them as well. Might be the most complex one regarding Hero's stats. Then it retreated a bit with H5, with refurbished skills. And from then on, things felt like dumbing down, not only heroes and skills, but overall gameplay along with them.

That's not the path I would take. But also, personal taste, as Jiriki9 has put.

Bruh, just change Knowledge into another thing called "Mana" (just like in modern King's Bounty) and you got rid of a stat. GG.

More Bruhs... Not even a real word...

Knowledge is however a useful stat, that has evolved in function. Applicable to both Magic and Might. The troop generation artifacts from HoMMV come to mind... I would even suggest that it can play the role of Diplomacy, in soliciting neutral troop stacks to join the hero!

Same for Attack and Defense, they are useful stats which have evolved in function.

I always thought Might Heroes should not be able to cast mass spells, and should even be limited in the spells they are capable of learning, simply because they are not magic oriented. Similarly, Magic Heroes would be restricted in some skills that are more combat oriented.

Other than that, I also agree with Jiriki.

@Panda

As much as I like h4's skills and magic systems, I still think h5 had something nice going. Community did pinpoint the issues it had, and it could have been corrected in further titles.

TBH I'd rather figure out a new way to calculate a hero's magic reserves, and remove Knowledge from the equation.

I think we need big depth of hero development. More choices. Its fail in H1-3 you have no choice how stats you add. Since HII you only have 2 skils to choice. Its parody of choice. And rather more stats eg. at or def, kn or pow, luk or mor. Hero rather as in WoG. One is fighter as HIV  second spellcaster and stats booster as HI-III. Make two version of Heroes is possible too. One more RPG as HIV but not with mistakes and bugs! Second as H I-III more strategy.

Oh, that was what I meant actually. I was speaking mainly that HIV had heroes on battlefield, so they had to have battle stats of their own. H5 had not, but a more complex skill system (which I did like back then); and heroes could attack monsters as well.
