where do people play multiplayer these days?

Well, I was an avid StarCraft gamer back in the days... 1999-2018.
But nowadays, it's mostly single-player! Vs the CPU!
I do however want to play some more real-time strategy and I think my next best option would be Microsoft's Age of Empires IV. It has been in development for almost four years and I expect it will be out in 2021! Hopefully!

play multiplayer by living with a rommate or family member and forcing them to play :V
"Yes honey, I will do the dishes this weekend... if you play a game of Heroes 3!"

I actually used to do something like that a few years ago but the other person was not very motivated during the game which sucked. I wonder why

It's actually really easy to find a match in the online lobby of Hota. Although this comes with the danger of having an opponent that just leaves for no reason, which is terribly annoying and ultimately put me off playing online.
Best thing would be to know someone personally to play against or at least to have some trusted online pal where you can be sure he or she will play until the end.

Just played XL map from 23:00 - 4 AM to find out the guy has been AFK what seems to be from week 2 or so and just had the turn timer run out

Once you collect some points and people will start to care about their rank situations like this won't happen
edit: actually how is this even possible? After all after every turn player must confirm that he is ready to go by clicking on the tick button of the box that pops up

Thats not what I mean. After your opponent finishes turn you need to confirm that you wamt to start yours.
