Isn't Heroes 7 basically Heroes 3 II?

A really, really buggy Heroes 3 II

It's more H5 than anything else. That's why I had said H7 should have followed H5, not H6. It has interesting combat ideas like flanking/obstacles, a truly turn-based H5-H3 hybrid combat system, a skill system that can be random or deterministic, an interesting caravan system, etc, etc. Problem is, it's all half-baked: not only not coming together well, most things are flat-out buggy.

Only thing that I really didn't like in H7 (obviously other than the half-bakedness) is that creatures have too few abilities. There are issues in skill/perk balance but that's part of the half-bakedness. If they had invested 3 good months in this game, it could have been a gem. FYU.

Somehat surprisingly regarding most comments, Heroes VI is being considered worse than VII

I guess veterans didn't like the wide ranging gameplay changes and "town conversion"

Personally I hated how similar all the faction line ups felt after the core/elite/champion tiers. Seemed like they all had the same general kit and were relying on the heavy amount of passive skills to differentiate the units. The core tier was especially bad imo and they were the most Op. Every game just mass your Faction’s core units, especially the ranged one, pick up the elite ranged unit/strike and return unit later because the melee ones just die. Take towns and continue to do more of that. Get champions cause they look cool but don’t use them or they die

H7 is a bloody mess of bugs but it was a step up from h6 in game design for me. I like less passives on creatures with a larger variety of stats between them.

I've replayed both recently and found it way harder to find any joy in H6. While H7 even though bugged/unfinished had me at least somewhat interested in it's towns and units.

Some more points in favor of H6 winning this poll is biggest reliance on conflux parts (for example 5th bonus trait thing doesn't work nowadays because online support has ended and its too "minor" of an issue for them to fix).
Skill system in H6 is (IMO) worst in the series as well (bar H1 which didnt have it at all, i think even H2 is superior to this abomination).
Leveling which follows some extremely weird line (you get stuck at level 6 for no reason whatsoever). Only 6 factions total, with units that feel very similar even though being filled to the brim with non-meaningful abilities.
Let's not forget that if there wasn't an outrage of fans about town screens after release (the people in charge of developing/designing this were the ones claiming town screens arent integral part of the Heroes series), we wouldnt have gotten them in later patch.

All in all, I wish we had gotten more H5 expansions instead of both games though . Or at least H7 style game with H6 budget/poolish.

H6 was all about streamlining things for MP gaming. Creature pool, town conversion (optional), Heroes to recruit with only 5 levels less than your best, no randomness in the hero development, less (and therefore more valuable) mines ...

Biggest problem: Not enough different map objects, making map-clearing somewhat boring.

Which was one of the worst design decisions they made. Imagine playing a game where factions are so streamlined that there's no room for players to tinker their own identity and playstyle. It is bound to get boring and repetitive after a while. Less choices to be made, less tactical thinking, less strategic depth. Just build & go and that's the game.

The design decision wasn't the worst (although 3 resources would have been too few anyway); they just didn't compensate (by creating more map objects, more "rewards" to fight for. Should have taken a very good look to the way H4 fills the map with stuff.

After my extremely heretical thread about H7 a few weeks ago, I'm inclined to say that H6 is the worst in the series because it's just so... static and repetitive. The story was decent, Sanctuary was cool, but virtually everything fun about heroes was stripped down to the bare minimum.

At the end of the day it's all the fault of Heroes V for making the franchise 3D unlike the real NWC isometric Heroes 5 assets

HoMM3 was my first of the series and I immediately fell in love with it.
HoMM4 was the 2nd, but I never managed to like it.
HoMM5 was the 3rd, but I did not like the 3D graphics and cartoony art style so whether the game was good or bad, I did not remain long to find out.
HoMM6 was the 4th and I already knew I won't play it more than 1-2 hours and then uninstall it for good.
HoMM2 was my 5th and while I found it to be playable, I could not stop comparing it to HoMM3 and how superior it is in terms of QoL features, I never played it for more than an hour, because having HoMM3 made all the other versions pointless for me.

I don't think I've played HoMM1 and I won't play HoMM7, because there is no reason to do so.

At the end of the day having HoMM3 as the best is enough for me and IMO to play any other version over HoMM3 is an outright lunacy and a waste of time.

Ah, but for other people there is a reason. For example, in H4 to play with fighting and combinable heroes and make an all-hero party.

And with no functional AI at all

Shame though, lots and lots of good ideas there. In fact, it had the potential to be Heroes III's worthy successor

Heroes VII is the worst. And I can say it without any shadow of doubt after beating all campaigns including the expansion's. But yes, I must agree it had potential.
