The Bad, The Bad and The Ugly
I think Erdogan and his government has finally upgraded to “pure evil.” They restricted Twitter after the earthquake, claiming it was to prevent disinformation. They did this while thousands of victims were still under the rubble and trying to communicate, give their locations through… Twitter. People were detained simply because they wrote about how unprepared the authorities were and how even new buildings failed to stand up to (pun intented) construction regulations. The official death toll is at 12 thousand and they are busy arresting people protesting on social media. I’m speechless.
Oh, and I just heard they refused clothing aid from Efes Pilsen and Tuborg. Why? Well, apparently, the clothes these companies sent were originally made for promotion and they had logos of alcoholic beverages on them. Big sin! Hundreds of thousands of people lost their homes during a freezing winter but we cant have people walking around in coats that promote beer now, can we. Islam at its best!

As you know Artu , I am not a Muslim or a Turk, but what exactly is "pure evil" about what they have done?
I disagree... Not saying censorship is okay either.

Cant you read? They blocked Twitter while people under the rubble used Twitter to get saved. And why, because people blame the government and post it on Twitter.
Imagine you are in a collapsed building; little air, plain dark, no food and water for hours, chilling cold, you are most probably injured, bleeding in dust and dirt. You have your phone with limited battery, you try to post your address, let them know you are still alive and the platform you are using is banned without you knowing it. I read tweets from people under the rubble and most of them died even when they could communicate.

I am not sure I get it. Why people under the rubble can only use twitter, I mean if you can connect you can use tens other applications, phone call, whatsapp, email etc. If twitter is not working, you will be notified, censure is not you posting but the others not being able to read, is a closed service.
I would like to read the arguments of the ones censuring it.

Their official reason is that it spreads too much disinformation which distracts the work of rescuers.
It doesnt matter if you can post elswhere, the mainstream communication platform is Twitter, it’s like saying if BBC is out, broadcast news on a local network. Your twitter feed has a chance to be seen by many followers, mails have to be checked, and its thousands of people under the rubble.
Dont expect any logical explanation, Erdogan will do anything not to lose an inch of power grasp.

What do you mean, quakes are seismic activity, that’s why you have such maps around after a quake.

It’s not a matter of what app you can use to send, but a matter of how likely that it is to be recieved by many. Besides, it’s not like you are comfortably sitting by your desktop, choosing apps, getting the news of a Twitter ban etc.
It is a stupid thing to do, no matter how you look at it. It’s not just people under the rubble, people organize aids on Twitter. Anyway, the reaction was so severe, they backed down in a day.

I recall Twitter suspended all accounts of those "spreading disinformation" about Covid in France. Where "disinformation" meant every piece of critical attitude towards french government health strategy.

Most governments will try controlling public opinion, some are just more straight-forward about it .. think 1984 vs Brave New World in terms of population control. Akin to China/Turkey/Russia vs Europe/Usa/Australia.
