Poll Question:
Most used Heroes 3 platform

Hello Community,

So it's been quite a few years since the mod platforms were first released...

...Im really curious what platforms do you use to play Heroes 3 and why?

If it's VCMI, which mods do you use?

If you don't play Heroes 3 anymore, vote for your most preferred one and let us know why.

Even if this has been asked before, i think it s relevant because time has passed.

Thanks!
Star_Mage

The question in the header is a little misleading, since it will predispose people to choose the platform they *think* more people play, as opposed to the one they *themselves* use more.

I think no version is more used than H3 complete, many people doesn't take the time to look for mods even in the "great out there". I myself, didn't know for years that H3 even had expansions, times were simpler back then (no ADSL, only phone internet).

But as of today, I most often use VCMI, since it is clearly the most moddable platform, and its also open source and free software. You can even play HotA in VCMI if you like and mash it with any other mods and new features (which is a bit of a "take that!" to the developers since they didn't want to even make it compatible with scripts in HD launcher and removed the feature, even though it is actually natively compatible on the code level).

I voted for hota as vcmi developer since it clearly has built large recognition over years, while VCMI got into really playable state this year. For my personal gameplay I would probably pick H3 complete this year, due to lots of maps that rely on original AI behavior to function properly - I accumulated map pack for that and also published it as Dydzio's Map Pack VCMI mod

As NimoStar said, realistically, most people play vanilla H3.

Otherwise, HotA is probably second to it, and by a good margin compared to the rest.

As far as I go, whenever I'm not playtesting DoR and the likes, I normally just play HotA on the go, usually a S map. If not, I am checking out stuff from other projects like ERA and VCMI.
(And this is excluding actual organized matches with friends, where we play whatever we feel like playing).

First ofcourse complete because its basic game in sell.
Probably simply install Hota and play is most popular mod.
Second Era/WoG because its first mod-addon.
And third vcmi because its still work in progress.

And HD mod is option too!

I play all of them except VCMI. I really like the idea of VCMI, but it doesn't quite work as well as any of the others for the moment. Back in 2015 I played VCMI way more often for the variety, but lately I've been finding myself craving elegance, polish and a degree of balance.

I would have said I play ERA II the most until very recently, because I like how easy it was to mod and there is a huge amount of mods and wog options for it, but I've been having loads of fun with the base the game plus plugins/MMAarchive editing, and slowly learning what I can do there.

Hota is a work of art, probably the best mod ever made for any game out there, but the thing holding it back from being my go to is that they, a mod, don't support modding for some crazy reason. (I know it's for competitive, but still. How many people are truly playing Homm3 competitively, and if they are, how many are actually going to cheat against their friends?)

Honourable mention to Ah3m, whose design document is one of the best game design reads I've ever had. Unfortunately it also guts the game, stripping it of its fat, and, for me at least, removed some of the magic along the way.
