Poll Question: Surrender specialty in HotA
HotA recently introduced a new hero specialty, surrendering.
A hero from Factory and one from Bulwark comes with it.
This is a specialty that takes effect, when you expect to lose a battle and wants to surrender.
Note also that this specialty is completely useless to AI, since it can't surrender.
What do you think of this specialty?

I don't understand it. The only use case I can really see is the occasional poor man's town portal, but you are losing a speciality for that.
I'd rather it was something like "You can still cast a spell a flee" or "You may surrender before the battle starts".
I guess on a really tight close quarter's map where you don't see other heroes coming it might be good on a scout with a large army? If Homm III had fog of war it would also maybe make sense, but visibility is rarely an issue and even if surrender is cheap, if you have an army that needs to constantly surrender the game probably isn't going your way anyway.

Do scouts have large armies though?
I usually just give them 7 level 1 units and then possibly they can get more from free level 1 dwellings, but they never have large armies.
It's just weird to me, to specialize in losing battles.
If you need this specialty something has gone wrong...

I'm glad to see you came to sense, years ago you argued that Miriam staring with Offense wasn't detrimental.

There is two strategy..
A). The main hero in the town near the strong enemy.. When you've TP and DD.. You take fast creatures, you split 7x 1 Phoenix, for example, and you attack against enemy, you cast a spell something.. It after you go to your town back, and you attack the enemy again.. Remember hero's movement, if you've another town..
B). Eagle Eye.. When you get spells, and you go to your main hero.. Remember Scholar..

The first strat is a decent use, except that you can't retreat anymore if you are the offensive hero and you cast a spell.

Remember I always choose random starting hero, so if I get Miriam as main hero, she needs Offense, like any other main hero.
If I get her as a scout, she does not need Offense.
If I get her as a town defender, she needs Offense, but Scouting skill and specialty is pretty wasted on a town defender, so that's not a good job for her.

Yesterday I randomed into Serena and I went full mages - because there were millions of mage towers. When I play single player, I always play random. It is fun to adapt.
What I feel about Melchior and Oidana? First it is good to have more heroes for Clash of the Dragons-template, where you usually pick a Diplomacy-hero at the start. For this, it is nice they start with leadership too because morale is a problem after time. Their specialty wasn't ever important for me. But I can imagine a custom map with huge enemy heroes where you have to surrender to have a chance. Mapmakers can maybe utilize their specialty.

I don't like it in the current form. The Diplomacy specialty should also lower the cost of gold for the neutrals to join your army.

This I totally agree.

Offense is wasted on a town defender. You want Artillery, Tactics and Armorer, maybe Archery or Interference but not Offense. You will try to fight as little as possible and let the towers do the job, unless we're talking about huge armies that won't fall to simple arrow towers. In that case good luck for a level 10, 12 town defender...

Well ironically town defenders are often not needed for town defense, at least not when your main hero has Advanced Town Portal.
It is more for fights you are sure the town defender can win and to save time on the main hero.
I agree with Artillery, Archery, Armorer and Resistance/Interference and maybe Tactics for a town defender, but also Offense as AI probably has Ballistics and destroys the gate fast. It might also have fast flying/teleporting units, so you will probably have to engage in melee pretty soon anyway.

But in that circumstance you defend, not engage, at least it's what I do.
Guys in towns are often more useful as carriers of artifacts and generators of wealth then town defenders but when I have to defend, this is generally the scenario. Ideally he has Artillery, Expert Fire Magic and Berserk but then I had too much time to spent on him (mostly in WoG maps).

Personally I think that since there's around 200 normal heroes, every skill and spell should be represented, no matter how niche the effect.
And surrendering is most definitely not the same as losing as the the skill ends up reducing the cost for up to 90%, which is quite huge. Surrendering gives the player the option to regroup and try again, and gets around elemental summoning spam, something that doesn't have really good counterplay otherwise. So yes, it's certainly not the most flashy ability, but there's nothing wrong having two heroes with such ability.
Still waiting for heroes with Scholar and Tactics specialty, since having them seems quite fitting and wouldn't be like overpowered or anything. Ballistics could also be one, just add yet another rock. Runes specialist I imagine we will get, when the Bulwark campaigns will be released.

I'm not against a surrender speciality, but I'm not sure I like the current implementation. There is a lot of other ways it could go.
Like making surrender free from the get-go, or allowing you to pay to surrender against neutrals, or allowing you to surrender before combat starts etc.
