I don't see the point.

I would have been very excited for a Might and Magic 6, 7 and 8 remake.

But I am unsure the value HoMM3 is making here. I would understand if this is some sort of low cost AI Development experiment, which maybe it is.

However, I would give them credit if they go beyond this and for example create a new expansion, I mean something like a good quality campaign with new features. Then, they will have all my attention.

In the meantime, I was invited to give ubi feedback for the remake but I ended up leaving because of their censorship policy. It begun with channel bans without explanation, emotes being removed and then a rule was added that discussing their moderation in public is punishable. They suggested we use their modmail but anyone who's ever made a ticket in ubi's customer support, knows this is a dead end.

Here is my exiting message to ubi and the fans if you want to see first hand. The people's support made me feel happy.

I hope the game turns out a good for the sake of all the heroes 3 fans but I won't be setting foot there again until ubi changes their policy to critique. Fans should feel wanted and free to express themselves.

---

As for the game itself I don't have too much to say. Its gameplay is copy-paste with some QoL but imo ubi should have clear priorities on a number of things.

- Artstyle should have been faithful to the original, this is H3 we are talking about. You know that most fans expect that much.
- There is no confirmation it will have the original music and if so this is an absolute disaster.
- I expect any changes to UI or screens to be an improvement but hiring screen for instance shows less things than the original.
- The game looks too modern with those neon green movement dots and building outlines.
- No confirmation of optional rebalancing. Yes it's been hinted but it should have been planned from the start. It IS a 1999 game and not a well balanced one.

Yeah, this is so unsurprising coming from Ubi.

1. Ignore/dismiss core feedback from insiders.
2. Do the opposite of what should have been done: NOT faithful to OG art direction BUT faithful to outdated gameplay from 30 years ago

Sad.

I also hope they can manage to cook at least something decent at the end but I basically hold no hope.

I think I heard something about it, looks like it was quite a weird situation...

Tbh, that's the thing with their moderation, they really like to use modmail. Though, from my own experience on that server, the moderator (grzmot69) tends to be somewhat quick with modmail stuffs, for one.

Kinda unrelated but, ngl, I start to feel like not talking about Remake in their channel but instead in a general one or in H3 one was a smart move.

Elvin said:

I think they said they won't, but not 100% sure on that, since I don't exactly remember where I got that info.

That's because that's an often asked thing. They don't really want to get more angry mob (while they already have quite a fair amount of people not liking it). IIRC they do not plan rebalancing out of the box, at least from what I've read.
Edit: missed the "optional part". I think it probably would be possible with modding stuffs they plan, but who knows, currently the games on Snowdrop (the Remake engine) are not moddable without workarounds tbh.

I'm not its target audience, that's for sure.

First: no need for a remake, if the game is essentially the same thing, with bland, generic 3D graphics. Although Townscreens look rather decent, and the hero entering the town gives a ... belonging sense about it, that's all there is to it. It still looks too much like H6 installment, for example, which was when I got throroughly put out, given H5 was already making me give up.

Second: tendency to please some ... audiences. I don't expect the game to be dumbed down, but I wouldn't be surprised if they tweaked it behind the curtains to make it even simpler than what it already is.

Third: artstyle, even from AI fanarts, seems to focus on making it more realistic-looking, which makes me even less impressed about it. I would sincerely be engaged if the game presented an origami/Ori game (pun intended) mixture of art design, a 2.5D, colorful.

Fourth: considering decades of people working on mods, if they add modding support, it might do for some, but I also don't expect people to engage with it, after so much effort placed on something they like; whereas it would require time for them to transfer or try something on something they didn't ask for.

Fifth: it's a close-remake, looking like a re-skinned game. So, it won't have more depth or features which I would be interest, if the old style was enough, not to mention HotA additions at reach. Olden Era had some new things, which I found rather interesting, but even then, not hooking me.

Sixth: multiplayer. If there would have a single player designed game, and an alternated multiplayer one, maybe I would look into it. I mean, H3 it was when the game started to be forcefully balanced, which was a real bummer for someone who only plays PvE. H2 and H4 had their charm because they weren't balanced at all, and in that regard, more logical, because world/nature is not fair. There was a great sense of achievement killing a stack of dragons with your paladins, or finally having enough resources to hire a shining new Titan, after devoting a lot of resources with building its dwelling in H2. Or the flexible line-ups in H4, each creature having abilities, not even needing upgrades, heroes on the battlefield (which could have been better implemented, I agree).

Seventh: timing seems very counter-intuitive. It seems to be a competition between both Heroes games, Remake and Olden Era, and one of them is going to be outshined – imho, remake will be set aside, and Ubi will, once again, be blasé with the IP in future.

Lastly: Ubisoft seems to think they're Capcom.

Wish: a MM6-8 remake would be refreshing.

At this point, I genuinely don't understand what the purpose of asking for fan feedback even is.

Ubisoft has had this franchise for over 20 years, and the pattern has been remarkably consistent: they do their own thing, fans tell them what works and what doesn't, Ubisoft assumes it knows better, the result disappoints, and then somehow the lesson is that the franchise is difficult to modernize or that the audience is impossible to please.

No. Maybe after 20 years, it's time to consider the possibility that the problem isn't the audience.

Heroes V is probably the closest Ubisoft ever came to getting it right, and even that game had to overcome an art direction and lore that alienated a significant part of the existing fanbase, as well as plenty of skepticism about moving Heroes into full 3D. Yet the gameplay, especially once Tribes of the East arrived, was strong enough that the game succeeded anyway.

And what lesson did Ubisoft apparently take from that?

Certainly not "keep what works and build upon it."

Heroes VI sold well, in my opinion largely because Heroes V had restored some confidence in the franchise. Then came Heroes VII, which felt like doubling down on many of VI's mistakes while somehow managing to make the gameplay experience worse. Again, years of fan feedback were available. Again, Ubisoft apparently knew better.

And now we arrive at an H3 remake.

This should have been the easiest pitch imaginable.

Heroes III. In 3D. Modern UI. Modern performance. Modern online infrastructure. Quality-of-life improvements. Beautiful animations. Preserve the iconic factions, creatures, silhouettes, atmosphere and gameplay philosophy that made the original timeless. Expand carefully from there.

That's it.

We're living in 2026, in an era where production tools, including AI-assisted workflows, make recreating, iterating on and modernizing visual concepts easier than ever before. And somehow the irresistible urge is STILL to redesign things that nobody was asking to have redesigned.

Why?

Apparently because we need to reach a "new audience."

I've been hearing variations of this argument for 20 years. Where exactly is this mythical enormous new Heroes audience that requires repeatedly distancing the games from the things Heroes fans actually love?

Maybe, just maybe, the easiest audience to sell a Heroes III remake to is the enormous audience that already loves Heroes III.

What a revolutionary marketing concept.

And then people wonder why so many H3 players are "stuck playing a 30-year-old game."

They're not necessarily playing it because they reject anything new. They're playing it because nobody has successfully made the better version they were waiting for.

There is an enormous difference.

Give people something worse for 20 years and then calling them nostalgic because they keep returning to the better game is absurd. It's like serving someone bad food repeatedly and concluding that they're simply emotionally attached to yesterday's dinner.

And this is also why I increasingly struggle to understand the point of insiders, community councils, surveys, Discord feedback, etc. If the fundamental creative direction has already been decided and the answer to major criticism is effectively "we understand your concerns, but we know what the modern audience needs," then what exactly are insiders there for?

To choose the color of the menu buttons?

You don't need insiders to validate decisions you've already made. You need insiders precisely because there is a possibility that your decisions are wrong.

That's what makes this so frustrating. Heroes III isn't some obscure failed game whose formula desperately needs reinventing. It is the game that survived while almost everything Ubisoft subsequently tried with the franchise faded away.

The market has already voted.

For decades.

I don't even think the remake will necessarily sell badly. The Heroes III name alone carries enormous weight, and curiosity will do a lot of work.

But I also don't expect it to become the gigantic revival it could have been.

And if it ends up doing merely "fine," I sincerely hope nobody concludes that this proves Heroes is a niche franchise that can't attract a larger audience.

Because once again, Ubisoft will not actually have tested how the market responds to a faithful, ambitious, modern Heroes III.

They'll have tested how the market responds to Ubisoft's latest interpretation of what Heroes III ought to be.

Those are not the same thing.

After 20 years, you'd think that distinction might finally have sunk in.

After a lot of failures, not only from Ubi, but many other studies for the last, what, 15 years? – they would've undertood one single truth: there's no modern audience.

What thrives is what keeps old gamers, and the kin-minded ones, engaged. That's that. That's where the money is; and it's the truth for all the entertainment industry.

If one chooses to make their game lose its identity, they're in a world of hurt, and no matter how much gaslighting they spew, words don't work on facts.

As many have pointed out, sometimes, just reestilyzing will do the trick, regarding graphics. This 3D-thing makes the game so bland, imho. It's one of the things that put me off completely.

For example, if they were to make H2 remake, I'd like it going for an art style of that of Ori and Will of Wisps game, for example. I took a screenshot from that game and the H2 phoenix model and made this below. It's not hard, as Galaad said, with current tools.

And yes, I agree with the absolute nonsensical dog-and-poney show of calling people to advice and test and whatnot, only to disregard everything in the end.

But, as they say, you rip what you sow.

If it's left to the player, it's pointless. The original balance is not meant for PVP, that's why hota became a thing. I'm not even saying they should follow hota, just.. fix the balance. Then you can play original if you want or have proper matches in rebalanced.

@Panda
I missed you man, good to see you
Yeah we're definitely not the intended audience and that's the silliest premise ubi got wrong. You hit the nail on the head in like all points.

Interesting idea to use ori as reference, I love that game's art so much. Though that above generation would look better without the white glow.

Hello, Elvin. Likewise, hope you're ok.

Ah, yes. But I've used a single prompt. It was mostly to show how fast it is nowadays. Ori is splendid, and I do think that if a H2 remake used that sort of artyle, it would be simply gorgeous, although it would look a bit childish. Which is why remaking H3 feels difficult, somehow. It has deviated from H2, but not far enough to be too realistic. H4 art was awful, with few exceptions. And the would be H5, the one leaked before Ubisoft had bought, looked kind of nice. I specially remember the Phoenix.

The thing is that they don't really say that the remake is an alternative to H3. I'd say in their eyes it's more of a substitute.
In that case having balance not being forced to be "balanced" (in quotes, since, in all fairness, different people have different opinions on balance), is the safest option. I mean, sure, they could've made different balance out of the box and have a mod that restores OH3 one, but that's kinda too much work for not too much gain, I'd say.

As for PvP people, I feel like the mod for their liking of balance will come out at some point, they'll make one likely. And then they would play their matches in rebalanced.

Also, I'd say HotA became a thing also because of the first actually new town (that wasn't a low quality replacer for WoG), tbh, it's a major thing after all.
