Well... I'm aware of picking what I want in Single play, but my favorite creatures from Asylum are these:
Medusas - Ranged, unilimited shots, no melee penalty, DEATH STARE.
Nightmares - High Health, Terror, they are qute...
Black Dragons - They are stronger then Hydras, they look cool, but they cost more and weekly growth is lower, but they are much better, so I choose them over Hydras

Medusa and Nightmare. 'Nuff said.
Hydra is good, but having Blackies is a must. It is the very meaning of this game. It is the meaning of life!

agreed regarding medusas.
But I would go for the efretts because of the damage they do when they are hit.With nightmares, you can cast fear only once so...
Also regarding dragons and hydras.
The choice depends on the opponents:
- If I am playing against good heroes with magic skills, I choose the blackies.Easy: because they are imune to magic.
- If I play against might, I choose the hydras because of their ability to bite more than one target.
However, the above strategy can prove itself wrong if in the first situation the opponent has some kind of artifact that negeates imunity to magic.. etc..

personaly i take
madusa (stone gaze)
efreeti (super fast)
black dragons (my battles dont last long enough for my hydras to do anything)
usualy once i get strong enough all i take is dragons and maybe efreet so my guy can move more  it all about the speed of course i play single player, so i dont really get challanged

Interesting,I read here everyone saying mah cute blackies bein more expensive than hydras....realy?U get 2 hydras weekly,how much do they cost?about as much as the 1 cute blackie u get every week!So there!
I usually choose medusas on this level but minotaurs can also be very useful,especially against a death alignement,in which case the medusa death gaze has no effect,but it still kills heroes and demons,so its usually a hard choice.what makes it even harder is that minotaurs are among mah favorite fantasy creatures!the mino heroes look stupid though,I want the homm3 mino hero faces back
on 3rd lvl I usually choose nightmares but efreeti are pretty good too,they are faster and on the whole do more damage.
on the 4th lvl loltake a guess!blackies of course!!!!a lot faster!is not addicted to spells(lol...not possible to be)+I just loooove dragons!

Of course Black dragons are better than Hydras! Hydras are very slow and do less damage than BD..

I actually choose hydras rather than black dragons close to 75% of the time, although I'm an Order player so I may not know what I'm talking about.

I always choose Medusa over Minotaurs; the stone gaze and range abilities of the Medusa leave the Minotaurs far behind. I preffer Nightmares over Efreet and Black Dragons over Hydras,

The Medusa seems the obvious choice over minonaurs.Godd shooter,Stone Gaze,Unlimited Shots.Most of you choose the Nightmare over Effreti.Their Terror ability can be easily counter-attavked with Dispel or Exorcism.I don't know why do you like them so much.The Effreti are fast flyers,immune to fire,and Fire-shielded.
The Blackie seems the obvious choice over the Hydra.

I take:
Minotaurs because they are a good melee unit and Medusas death stare won't work on Death troops anyway.
Effreti because they are fast and have those fire abilities. Nightmares Terror can be a pain, but in the end Effrets are stronger.
Black Dragons. Do I have to say why?

The way I see it, the efreet have a true advantage over the nightmares in one aspect only - their greater maneuverability, meaning their superior speed and movement, especially when the nightmares are hindered by rough terrain. In all other fields, the nightmare is superior. And what's all the rage about the efreet's fire shield? Sure, it's relatively annoying when you are battling them, but when you are the one controlling them you have to be assuming you'll be taking large amounts of damage for it to be effective at all. And immunity to fire? Yeah, that comes really in handy when you're fighting the few creatures that actually have a fire based attack.

I agree, black dragon with 2+ stacks of nightmares and medusas = deadly combination, especially against armies with hero(es).
Of course, against the death, efreets are more useful than nightmares.
