I might be seeing what you mean now, Darion. It can't be like Heroes III, I'm sure, but perhaps if it showed some lava pools and burnt rock around the Efreet Dwelling, eventually melting into the snow, swamp, or whatever terrain? I dunno...

Sorry... my last post was a little too harsh xeno.

Don't drink coffee.. not only is it bad for you and makes your breath stink, but it makes you incredibly irritable

Zombies getting a tan in their castle! HP 500 sunscreen for the vampires.

Well, thanks for your support, RobinHood. Who said necros and ramparters can't be friends? ( are you a ramparter?).
About your questions with the mix of creatures, we agree again...it's not a good idea. For multiple reasons.
First the IDEA itself is fragile: a necro is something else  from a demoniac; you might call them relatives, but they're really not brothers to put them together.
Second, the creature problem: they have together so many interesting creatures that it's really a shame to exclude some of them...like they did with the lich or the dreadknight; also demons should be back perhaps with a changed image.
The game lost much of it's evil part, as Inferno was removed, Necropolis lost it's darkened atmosphere and Dungeon-Asylum has a decrease in quality too( in my opinion, of course, and yours I hope).
I say again, replacing Vampires with the cactus is an abominable deed. Shame on them.

Hey, I'm amazed to see this thread revived after so long.

I haven't been posting or even keeping up with the developments of HOMM4, simply because it has lost it's appeal to me.  Please, don't think I'm one of those guys that goes around screaming "If the game dosen't have <whatever> in it, I WILL NOT BUY THE GAME".  However, the truth is that I will most likely not buy this game...  and if I do it will only be after it winds up in the bargin-bin.

It seems that all the great innovations of HOMM4 was just a way that they could get away with doing less...

The towns are now organized by different schools of magic!  Wow, Great!  But, there are now only 6 towns...  Couldn't they come up with a few that used 2 schools?

You now have a choice of which creatures you want as your troops.  Excellent!  But, you only have a choice of 2 creatures...  and there are only 4 levels.

The town screens are now easy to navigate.  Whopeee!  So what if they all look like cookie-cutter collages with a predictable pattern.

The only real improvement seems to be with the heroes themselves...  but that is not enough with all the other downgrades to really inspire me to rush out to the store and buy the game on the day it's released.

The truth is, that the game will sell...  and it will make 3DO a lot of money...  the reason is because it is part of the HOMM legacy, and that alone will spell success.  But that legacy will end with HOMM4, and will spell the demise of the series.  Age of Wonders 2 looks like it really holds promise (it seems to be a modern day version of Masters of Magic), and I strongly believe that AOW2 will become the leader in the genere after what I predict to be a rather mediocre showing by HOMM4.  AOW2 might be a while longer before it's released, but I have Civ3 and will have MOO3 to keep me occupied...  I'll wait for HOMM4 to drop to $20, I don't want to spend more money than it's worth.

Moreover, it really bothers me that such a great game (HOMM1-3) will be cast into the shadows of mediocrity by it's so-called inovative successor...  when it had so much promise.  I will grieve the loss, but I will move on.

Ramparter for ever !

I never said you that I had a secret passion for vampires lords. They are my favorite bad creature. I hope they will stay a mid-level in H4, they don’t need too much HP if they want to regenerate quickly. That’s paradoxal, but the vampires lords are the only creatures I know who don’t need to have a lot of HP.

I know you’ll be disappointed if dreadknights aren’t in H4. They are powerful (perhaps too much...), their double damage and in their hidden face make them mysterious and terrifying.
However, the developpers of H4 may think they just look like a hero on his horse. A knight on his horse is not really an original unit. The champions exist for a long time and the Nightmare should take the place of the Dread Knight (in the gamer’s hearts, not in the Necropolis).

I have my own idea about the necro creatues. You noticed certainly there is dominant colors in each town (talking about H3 creatures and structures). The Castle is blue-white-gold , the Rampart is green-braun , etc... The Inferno is only red and the Necropolis is black-grey. These colors CAN NOT be together. If the red infernos belong to the Necropolis, it means that life,  is introduced in it. All the undeads have decomposed flesh, there is no life in them.

On the screeshots I saw (hmm4.com), the infernos are still red. That’s why I think they shouldn’t belong to the Necropolis. Moreover, the Necro town wouldn’t have any shooter? It’s not possible. I’m persuaded the vampires will replace the ugly venom spawn, and another shooter will be found. If the mummies come back, it will be in the necro too.

In the Necro, I will also put : Skeletons & Zombies (1) – Ghosts (who look nice) & Mummies (2) – Liches & Vampires (3) – Bone Dragons & a new UNDEAD creature.  The Venom Spawn should be a swanp creature, or shouldn’t exist...

I’m happy but sorry for you, the young French footballers have just beaten the Rumanian. But perhaps you don’t care. How is the weather in Transylvanie today?

Raining, pell...
They made an oponent for angel - the devil, and an opponent for genie - efreet; why shouldn't remain the opponent for the champion - the dreadknight?
I would hate to choose between vampire and lich (venom spawn is an easy choice: I would never pick it even if it would be the best creature in town!)
Let alone the graveyard which acts as a dwelling, nothing else to feed the necros in the town, right? Perhaps some green grass so the nightmare wouldn't die of hunger....
