My Zone Experiment As A Newbie

Hi all, I'd Just like to say that I have been into MSN Zone as a newcomer under a new name, I found it impossible to get into a game, be it allies or 1vrs1 also any tournament, I get zone messages saying "I can't play the game cause I suck" also some things this board will not allow me to say, basically I was cursed at and belittled.

People mocked me in the main chat lobby and others join in as if its the fun thing to do.

I know people want players that will finish the game or play a tournament game but in my opinion people need to be given a chance and/or directions to a few tournament sites

A few things I'd like to ask opinions on:

1. If you want more activity on the zone, is this the way to treat players?
2. Have you ever tried this experiment yourself or have you ever been the newcomer?
3. should people be treated in this manner if they are newbie or not in any tournaments?
4. Would it not be the correct way to help these players, not only to increase the zone activity but to be friendly ?

I suggest maybe a 2v2 subtournament with 1 newbie and 1 experienced player vrs the same, What are your veiws on this ?

Has Anyone else got any ideas to improve the zones attitude towards newcomers?

Ive tried it b4...

and actually could find lots of games, but this was maybe 5-6 months ago. usually just depends how you act, cause obviously Id react 2 different ways towards an immature newbie and a mature newbie.

as for the 2v2 tourney with 1 newbie and 1 experienced player...its been tried b4, and it may help a few, but since the numbers are so small for heroes, people quickly forget about it, cause they dont want to wait forever to play the game or if u set bracket matches, half wont show up...but maybe im just negative cause ive tried in the past and its failed. never hurts to give it a shot tho.

I know what you're talking about.

My first Zone experience was about three weeks ago, and I'd like to say it was my only disappointment, but there have been a few. I did end up getting into a game that night, with an ally who did nothing but dis me constantly. Not my idea of an ideal evening.

Not so sure about the maturity angle -- I think the majority of Zoners that were behaving badly were anything but mature. But there's definitely a clique aspect to it. I know how to play the game -- well -- but don't know all the lingo yet, and that's what seemed to draw fire, not lack of skill or maturity (and generally seem to be the same people there who are constantly dissing TOH).

I don't have the patience to "lurk" for a month and learn the answers to questions because I'm too afraid to ask. I have found the occasional *nice person* (!) there who just wants to have a game. A comparatively rare experience until you find some regulars, I think, so treasure them.

Hiya JB Yeah 5-6 months back it would have been much easier to get a game as a newbie as there were 100+ players hangin' out in zone, still there was abuse back then too, elitist jargon but yeah was alot easier

As for 2v2: If newbies LIKE the game I think they will turn up for their game, also I would think there would be an added insentive as they would be playing with a more advanced player whom they would learn so much from and In my opinion would then be more enthusiastic towards playing in the future, trying out their new found skills and such.

@Newbies: what do you think about the idea? I'm pretty sure if theres a good few of you out there that wanna learn the game at a more advanced level, I think there might be something the tournaments could do to make your gaming experience more fun.

@Crazy_canuck: yeah I can understand how you have been treated as a new player to online heroes 3 (I think thats what your saying) when I 1st entered the zone I thought I already new everything there was to know about the game.

I too was given abuse in games but I chose to Ignore it and watched to see how & why they mocked me, I then decided I needed to change my gameplay and learnt from it, I found that people mock you because they feel you were not helping them in the way they would have wanted you too, like building capitol instead of creatures dwellings and so on.

Maybe I'm completely wrong here but this was my 1st experience of online gaming with heroes, ask JB he beat me up I was a poor newbie with no knowledge, hehehe

P.S Crazy_canuck, If you ever need a game gimme a shout, I'm even willing to teach you what I know, my zone handle is as below.

Well, I came to the zone to play. There may be cause for bragging rights after a game, but putting down strangers in a chat room? lol. As for tactics, the proof is in the pudding. I don't think there's any one way to play. Those that think so may be in for a surprise.

Anyway, if the question you're asking is: "is this kind of attitude conducive to a finding more players/having better games?" then should I have to watch my step and try to emulate other people to gain acceptance? It's an online community, so you'd think that tolerance would be the name of the game. I'm an old chess tournement-goer. We don't even say "check" because it could be taken as an insult. That's a far cry from the kind of thing I've heard and seen in the Zone. Besides, there's nothing better than beating an arrogant opponent when you do so with quiet grace

It just wont work out Tel because everyone has dif opinions about this situation.
Once you been playing for so long you are either catious are just want to keep your points & talk down on the noob & if you dont believe me talk to some of the chairmen here & they will side with me, even though I dont agree with them.

This I cannot agree on, in my opinion I think there IS only one way to play heroes, I have yet to be proven wrong on this, maybe there is still time Game ?

Hiya Aculias I'm not only talking about points, I'm talkin about people just being civil with each other.

Give newbies a chance, be they bad or great players, some are probably great players but people just don't give them a chance, I think that should be changed and if public opinion never changes then it will never hapen, after all it is only a game.

I do agree on your point about tournament players though, they do seem to be caucous, I remember when I was new in zone all those names that took advantage of my naivity, and when I learnt more about the game they didnt want to know me you know who you are.

well if u want to make this thread more exciting, u can make a shame file and "out" all the players that put s@#t on u

seriously tho I find about half the newbies very touchy. what ur suggesting is being polite to them, but not have to play them. i played one a few weeks ago who didnt move or buy any heroes in week 1, not even scout at all or tag mines. idea was he could save money and go out in week 2 with an army So if i dont wanna waste my time i will stick to who i know. However, i will help them find a game with another newbie if i know of any. Then i usually get the response, "are u scared of playing me?", "i havent played online much but i'm very good", "i can only get better by playing good players". Trouble is, none of those comments motivate me to play. I play for fun, and fun is the challenge. If for some reason i do play an unknown player, i often suggest they choose a town and hero they like and i will go random, but still not much fun.

Hiya Midni9ht It's not about making the thread more exiting...lol - I don't know if your joking or what here...lol - I personaly don't like the idea of a shame file, it would just be like the HOS of toh, people make mistakes and once realised they are sorry for it and people just call them names for the rest of their zone lives, then up pops a new name, so in my opinion bad idea (just my opinion, i know others prefer it).

On The Newbie Touchy thing: Yes I agree, they are very touchy but most mature (older) newbies are more willing to learn, trust me I have taught many and still do

I think the majority of the "touchy newbies" are young kids maybe a "little league" like the baseball thing is in order for them and they can all play together

No, but seriously I have had all those "Oh afraid to play me eh" things too, what I do is offer to teach them, I set up a game (allies) and begin to teach them, then i get comments like "hey! your cheating, how did you kill all those "blah" with just 1 dragon fly?" then I explain to them and they are quite taken about the speed thing, not even knowing about it.

So each thing they ask in game I help them basically, that way they also understand how time consuming heroes can be, with 5-10 fights (depending on situation) per turn, as soon as they begin to understand whats goin on they are hooked even on thier turns i advise them what to do and so on, If they like heroes they continue to learn, if they are the impatient ones then they last 2 days leave thinking they know everything either way I'm happy, I play for fun and its fun teaching

I was also making the suggestion too Tel.
You see there are many examples of the unfairness that is spread from this whole tourney & it is like a group thang.
& believe me from the exp i went to is the exploited group is the ones that will try to tear you apart if they dont like you.
Just unfortunate that most are too judgemental to people they dont even know.

If you dont know me, then you cant judge me

Hey You

The Zone's a great place.  Sure, there are some people who give noobs a hard time, but there are also a LOT of great people (like TEL) there, as well.

Basically, most of the noobs who go there and get flamed to death are usually talking a bunch of crap in the lobby or spamming their room number all over the chat or talking a bunch of crap like "Why won't you play me?  Afraid I'll kick your ass? etc etc etc"

The ones who go there with an open mind and don't act like morons are generally well accepted and don't have problems.

Come to the Zone, act like a decent person, and have fun

a wake up call foos

A significant portion of those who hang in the zone 24/7 are geeks and antisocials.  It is a far easier to rant out or feel superior in a room in which you dominate, no matter how insignifcant it is, and in which you do not have any consequences for your said actions.

However, when these people are met in person (real life), in some cases cant even speak with their heads up lol.

nope

Until very recently, I had the worst connection in all of HoMMdom, and I managed to play lots of games.

If I'm still online and I can't catch Zud for a game of H4, I'll come to the zone and we can have a friendly game

@Aculias Yeah unfortunately I have experienced this too, after time I just Ignored and didn't bother with that particular group, yes I'd say hello and be polite but thats as far as it went, hell yeah I've argued too but thats just my bad side, it comes out when I'm annoyed, I call it Oo_TheEvilTEL_oO.

Wherever there is tournaments there will exist these types of groups that are unfair, rude and incapable of friendship, sad but true.

Thats how most people are, they get big headed & it seems no matter how nice you are, you get treated like crap.
I remember I was one of the nicest guys for almost a yr until it just dont pay off because as Joel told me before I joined this tournament is a cutthroat & only the strong survive.
Then when you are nice you get tooken advantage of & then you go through as many crazy games as I have.
Including 20 times of drops & cheating & I rarely reported & if i have it was waited out & necer talked through or I just let it go.
Theres only so much a person can take & I dont blame you for only playing fun games Tel because I did that for a bit & it was really fun, no rush & you can talk any way you want & is just total fun not worrying if the other player is too competetive & start talking smack.

As the zone thang it dont matter if you are there 24/7 or you just got in yesterday it still wont change because you are already judged.
By how you are, the way you talk & if you dont have the same likes as the others it's like prejudice in real life.

When I first started (Season 2) the big names were JB239, Ves, Flamingo etc.... and those folks were kinda hard to talk to at first as well, but you talk to who you know. I have been on alot lately and I can tell ya, I have played or rather started and stopped and started and stopped and it really gets old. I don't think the people are rude I think they play who they know will stay. The TOH has fallen because the N00bs don't see the game as we saw it then and hopefully still see it.

My 2 cents worth

and Tel please dont make a song of this in French or other wise
