Molten Lava would be nice as a river across the battlefield.  Flying creatures would be safe but ground troops would be affected.

Nah. I didnt find it interesting. I didnt even get the point. In any case, it is irrelevant.

Weather is an arbitrary piece of realism, which would complicate both development and gameplay, when alternative improvements and innovations have far more potential to improve the game.
Now is this statement wrong, or do you just not like it?

NWC should abstain from ejaculating cool things and stick to making HoMM a highly thoughtful and enjoyable strategy game.

This is jst an added dimension to the game.  The complicated the game the better the strategic outcome as well as adding more interest to teh game.

In that case, I invite you to give Master of Orion 3 a try. You'll love it! It has lots of "dimensions" and is complicated as hell!

It seems to me like you are trying to disguise a sentiment as a thought.
BTW, there are SIX(6!!) errors in your two statements.

But in MOO3 the "dimensions" don't matter a damn, you build several big ships with big guns and go in and kill them.

I prefer the Heroes style as opposed to sci-fi style.

But thanks for the suggestionl.

So.. it seems that opinions about the weather are divided. I don`t think it`s such a bit issue though, if it`s well embodied in the gameplay it shouldn`t make the game too complex. Instead it will add to the ambience. It can be worked out how it can affect the army, movement and morale should be fine, but affecting fire and cold based spells and abilities is maybe too much. So i guess i`m pro weather.
Now insaneroach brought up a couple of important issues in the beginning of the thread and though i don`t agree with all his views, he made 2 strong points. First, I too believe that maps should be given more space as they`re indeed cluttered. It`s not solely up to the map makers, the terrain elements and structures don`t help in that direction. I like purposeful things, and buildings should be made like that. They should be built for a purpose. I don`t think there`s anything wrong with decoration though, as long as it`s contributing to the game atmosphere, but using it too much to make things cluttered is something I`m against. A nicely spread plain with little hills grass and trees can be beautiful enough on it`s own.
The other issue is that a game should be enjoyable without being too complex. Of course it should avoid repeating itself, but that doesn`t mean it needs to be very complex. Chess is a very good example. Think of the game disciples, it does repeat itself, ending up tedious. But i don`t think it`s because it`s simple, but because it forces you to do the same things over and over again. Now so might think that, for example, more buildings will add more variety. Hmm, maybe it works the other way round as this way you`ll have to build them all, over and over again. A simplistic rule would be to have more things to do a few times, and less things to do many times. So building is something you do often thus less structures might be better. On the other hand, hiring a hero is something you do less often so you might as well have more options when doing it, maybe even customising your hero before he`s put in charge of an army. Those are merely examples, my point is, to keep things simple (as simple as a turned based strategy game can be) while avoiding repeating tedious tasks. And give it much more space and scale. I have posted under the thread *a new beginning* maybe you want to check my thoughts about the map and battlefield screens. Anyway, i hope the outcome will be good as many of us need a new heroes game quite badly!

I agree with that. Tedious and repetitive things that dont require any real thought or consideration, must be eliminated.
Make the game both thoughtful and rewarding.

Tedious? I think not.

Complicated? Yes but that is to make the game more interesting.

If baldur's gate can have weather in the game then so should Heroes.

Bring the game more closer to reality and give it a greater felling of depth.

Even if it is for comestic purposes only.

I mean like animated weather effects on the Adventure Map and Combat Map.

Weather like

Rain,
Snow,
Winds
Storms With occasional flashes of Lighting across the map etc.

I know that mean more animation and probaly more resources from the computer system but i was just wondering.

Baldur's Gate 2 have some weather animation in the game and it was very nice and gave the game a sense of realism.

Anyone else think that too?

See HOMM is very unique.  Thats what i like about it.  Simple game, simple rules, great entertainment.  I like Heroes III more than 4.  Heroes 4 is too complex and has too many exceptions.  I would play Heroes III but I've beaten it so many times.  New add-ons like more spells, creatures and towns are great.  But think how complex weather or seasons would be.  The game also has plenty of realism, its a fanstasy game!  It doesn't need to completely real.

Couple Weather ideas..

Clouds: No effect, but can grow to rain or snow

Rain: Cut movement(both combat and adventure) by 1/4, 1/3 for flyers. Cut visibility by 1/3. Fire spells function poorly. Fire Creatures(elementals, efreet) have some penalty

Rainstorm: Cut movement(both combat and adventure) by 1/3, 1/2 for flyers Cut visibility by 1/2. Fire spells do not work. Fire Creatures(elementals, efreet) have some penalty

Thunderstorm: Cut movement by 2/3, flyers by 3/4, in combat, flyers and tall creatures have a small chance to be struck by lighting. Bolts would strike the battlefield randomly for effect, but only tall and flyers would be affected. Visibility is 1 cell. Fire spells do not work. Fire Creatures(elementals, efreet) have some penalty. Lighting spells are more effective. Depending on type of creatures, may experience death from exposure(on adventure map). In water, cannot land, small creatures may be thrown overboard, no combat possible, move randomly at 50% movement

Mist: Cut visibility by 1/3

Fog: Cut visibility by 1/2

Split-pea soup fog: Visibility is 1 cell

Snow: Cut movement(both combat and adventure) by 1/4, 1/3 for flyers. Cut visibility by 1/3. Fire spells function poorly. Fire Creatures(elementals, efreet) have some penalty

Snowstorm: Cut movement(both combat and adventure) by 1/3, 1/2 for flyers Cut visibility by 1/2. Fire spells do not work. Fire Creatures(elementals, efreet) have some penalty

Blizzard: Cut movement by 2/3, flyers by 3/4 Fire spells do not work. Fire Creatures(elementals, efreet) have some penalty. Ice spells recieve a bonus. Depending on type of creatures, may experience death from exposure(on adventure map). Visibility is 1 cell

Tremor: Cut land movement by 1/3

Quake: Cut land movement by 1/2, If this happens in town, repairs are necessary. Small land creatures have a chance to die. in combat, may deform terrain

Earth Shattering: Land units are immobile, All land units have a chance to die. Ground combat immpossible. Repairs necessary in a town.

Rough seas: Reduce oversea movement by 1/3, in combat ground units crossing to another ship may be thrown overboard.

Gale: Reduce oversea movement by 2/3, cannot land, small creatures may be thrown overboard, no combat possible, Cut visibility by 2/3

Hurricane: Randomly move at 150% rate, cannot land, all creatures have a chance to be thrown overboard, no combat possible. Small chance for ship to be destroyed. Visibility is 1 cell

Calm eruption: Lava will appear around volcano

Violent eruption: Reduces visibility in huge area by 1/2 (ash cloud). in smaller area, creatures may die from poisonous gases. Lava will appear around volcano very rapidly

These weather effects are controlled by the mapmaker, who can set zones where weather will appear at what chance and what type. The mapmaker can also set weather effects that will happen via event

REALLY good ideas. ^.^ extremely well thought out, and very logical at the same time, though I must say that it seems as though the Fire creatures have very little chance of surviving in this. that one part doesn't seem very logical to me.

personally, I LIKE the idea of weather, especially if storms moved across the map. it could make it more strategic, because you would have to pay closer attention to the weather and act accordingly. for example, if you saw a storm forming off in the east, you would have to make sure not to let it hit you, and carefully watch where it was heading so that you didn't get caught in it. and weather is unpredictable, is it not? imagine what it would be like if the storm suddenly changed directions, heading straight towards you when you thought it would be going in the opposite direction?

Since from my understanding the game is going to be 3D, I would be very surprised if they DIDN'T put weather in there. Most 3D games have weather effects because they're so easy to add and they definitely enhance the atmosphere.

As to whether or not it should effect gameplay, it would be a good idea if they followed the footsteps of most other modern developer and made it visual only.

Should it be localized or global? Doesn't really matter.
