Non-linear campaigns Posted 1-3-2001 09:17
There's a thing I appreciated very much in HOMM2 and has disappeared in the HOMM3 release: the non-linear campaigns. In The Succession Wars, you were always offered to betray your lord, both in Roland and Archibald campaigns. There also was some "optional" scenarios you could play during the campaign. Playing them cost you some more time and lowered the final score, but you could gain some benefits like "Dwarven Alliance", "Ogre Alliance" or "Dragon Alliance". These creatures joined you for free in all the remaining scenarios.
This was only an example. What I'd like in HOMM4 is a more elaborated campaign system, that will let you choose between different ways in certain points and maybe with various final scenarios. I disliked to play Sandro or Xeron in the SOD and AB campaigns knowing that I will have to defeat them to finish the campaign.
Why can't these guys win? They can't create marvellous troops like the unbalanced sharpshooters or enchanters, but they may have a chance.
What do you think? Don't you miss the versatile HOMM2 campaign style?

100% correct.
I never played h2 but I did think it was kinda stupid after I finished the campaign and there was only 1 way to do it and the good guys always won.
I would love to see more options in the campaigns

I'd definitely enjoy branching campaigns more. It'd be one more thing that made HoMM one of the better fantasy strategy games out there. I had high hopes for the Mutare campaign from Arm's Blade which contained access to the bonus area in one map because of actions in the previous, but it came as a disappointment to find out what was actually there.

As with any game, the scenario and campaign editor should be packaged with the product, and should allow the consumer the ability to recreate any effect that's available in the packaged product. Incidentally, I've always given 3do a top ranking for it's map builder in my reviews. It's very flexible and powerful, and is the most user friendly I've seen. The campaign editor is nearly as good. In this instance, it's not the quality that's the problem, just the options available.

I agree completely
I definitely agree with both of you. The campaigns should have optional "branches" and they should be longer than only a few maps a piece. I liked the length of the HOMM2 campaigns because it meant that it was more of an epic storyline to go through.

I Agree the campaigns in heroes 3 are pretty boring and more frustrating than challenging. Where as the campains in heroes 2 were engaging and some genuinly challeging (remember Achibalds country lords campaign), they should definatly have the campaigns like in heroes 4 more like those in heroes 2.

Yeah, those three-scnario campaigns sucked. L0ong campangs will RULE, and they apparently will be in. I'm swinging back to thinking that HOMM4 will be good.

Its always more fun if you have more options then just "Kill <bad guy>" and then its complted, was there in HOMM2 something like, "Kill <bad guy>, but you may also ally and overthrow your leader" sort of thing?
