Return of the Random!

I tryed it out today - pretty cool.
Lots of settings to be played with. The first map I made came out very empty. But after a couple of trying I got some maps that looked like fun to play.

It says you need GS or WoW to use the map at first. But you can use the util to change it to original version. And then enjoy without the expansions.

Try it out for yourselves

Btw Ves you may need to put a random map slot in the map section.

Anyone getting new mini tourney ideas yet?

Once you guys have played a few randoms, and it seems stable and reliable, I will post a random map option on the winloss report.  I will then also make an announcement about its use for homm4 ToH gaming.  

This is really good stuff the will prolong the interest of homm4 gaming, but what is funny is how a non-3d0 programmer ends up making this random map generator, the programmers in 3do/nwc couldnt.

Quick Walkthrough

Ok, so I had a couple of people asking for help with this yesterday in Gamespy so here's a quick walkthrough.

After you've downloaded the Util you have to unzip it, so do that but make sure you remember where you put it.

1. Then go to the Windows Start menu and click Run.

2.  Browse until you get something like this; ""E:games/3DO/Heroes of Might and Magic IV/maps/Testmaps/H4UTIL.EXE"

3.  Bring up this:  "E:games/3DO/Heroes of Might and Magic IV/maps/TestmapsH4UTIL.EXE"  and then type in '-wr1'  after and hit enter.
So it would look like this:"E:games/3DO/Heroes of Might and Magic IV/maps/Testmaps/H4UTIL.EXE" -wr1
(Note:  THe number '1' means it will generate a small map.  2 = medium, 3 = large, 4 = XL.)

4.  Now the Random Map Generator should have popped up.  Fool around with the settings, and when you're ready hit the 'Generate' button.  A map named 'Random Map 1312431432.h4c' should be in the same directory that the Util is in.

5.  This new random map is a Gathering Storm map so you have to change its version, unless you're using GS.  

To do this you do it just like you made a map.  Go to run and type in this:  "E:games/3DO/Heroes of Might and Magic IV/maps/Testmaps/H4UTIL.EXE" -wv1 Random Map 1312431432.h4c.  (In this case wv1 stands for: write version h4 normal.  2 would be GS, and 3 is WOW.)

6.  Now go to your folder where the util is and look for a map named Random Map 13124314321.h4c.  (I actually rename all my randoms so I don't have to type in the long number.  RandomA, RB, etc.)

7.  Now you can play, and look at in the editor, the random map  with normal h4.  It takes a little practise with the settings before you'll get a decent map but it's kinda fun.  

If there are any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

cool, does it run on templates like H3 rmg? Does it have multiple zones where u can have different settings? Or is it just one zone with random stuff in it?

Ummm, I don't know.  Each map lists a seed it was based on, and the maps appear to have different zones.  But other than generating and trying a few out, I haven't looked at how it's really set up.  Maybe someone else knows more?

Very cool!  Now Slava needs to get paid some royalties or his idea bought graphicized and then sold as the new exapansion or something.  I would like to see some credit given by the company that benefits from his work a bit since they don't do the job that should be done themselves.

Actally Midnight your in control of the templates pretty much, you can measure the sizes of the maps & what kind of terran you want by meters.
You can choose from 4 extra random towns to 20 if you wish,You can make the map full of treasure by moving the metter all the way to 100 or only 10 etc, basically right click the meter you are using 7 it will show you how much will be added for example, how man towns will be added in your random map.
You click on the meter & right click it to show how many it shows, you can have either 3-5-25 etc excluding your already starting towns.

You always start with wood 7 ore sheds thats not a problem also Ves.
You can control almost everythang you want to add on the map.
Add some more mines so you can get a chance to get other precious mines.
I practiced about 3-4 dif randoms I generated in 2 player modes & we are never too close, always all mines somewhere you got to find them but are in you side of the territory.
It seems pretty even but one thang that can be tough are the so many Utopias there are.
One game I had 3 topes on my side & com had 2.
Last game i played I had about 7 topes on my half of the map & com only had 1.

Other wise like i said there are always the wood & ore mines, the players in 2 player modes are always seperable in most ways.
Alot of territory to explore blocked of by trees mountains etc but there are routes i never seen a blockage anywhere but there are ways around.
besides the so many topes I think the temps are ready to go in some tournies but lets get more votes & see what they think.

ok, sounds like there is 1 zone only, with the settings applying to the whole map. This will be fun for a while, but also limiting, cant make a "blockbuster" or "extreme" style map where u have treasure zones to break into etc. Or am I not understanding it properly?

Well you can edit it to give treasure zones!!!  oh wait... then it wouldnt be random... damn... heh

Ah I also failed to post that it is mostly an open map also, just hard to find your oponent at times.
That can be a downfall for closed maps players orless theres a way to prevent it lol?

this thing is pissing me off.  LOL   I can generate a map just fine, but as soon as i try to convert it to a -wv1 map, i get errors.

When does the user friendly version come out?  lol

hey mike,dont compare IIImaps to IV.
Maplearning is much different.. randomness is much more there to IVmaps, which make it harder to pattern em + ALL do random towns.

+ we got stinky camel shut in a cave,making us maps
