Russ--

It's party 24 hrs a day and they drive around in red and blue painted cars, honking to each other.

They also use water guns to soak the children at junior high!

OK, I take it upon me to explain this distinctively Norwegian phenomenon.

When norwegian kids have gone to school for 12 years (equivalent to the american high school, I believe), it has become tradition that late april - early may, the graduates become what is called RUSS. One russ, many russ.

The origin of this tradition dates back to the union days when Norway was subjected to Danish rule. At that time, there was no university in Norway, so Norwegians who wanted a higher education had to enroll overseas, most commonly the university of Copenhagen. To make sure the students had the necessary common knowledge, they had to pass a test, namely examen artium.

The word RUSS stems from the latin expression Cornua Depositorus, meaning to put away the horns. When the examination results were announced, all the candidates wore a "horn" which were removed if they had passed the test. So RUS, the last syllable, became the short term, and an S was added in a Norwegianization. And as this tradition slowly withered away in Denmark, the Norwegians kept it up when universities were founded in Norway.

However, it was not until 1905, a year after the arrival of german students wearing red hats, that this tradition began.

So a mixture of danish and german student traditions gave birth to a phenomenon that is, by most norwegians, regarded with as much expectation and held in as high esteem as I believe senior prom is in USA.

Now for the modern celebration:
As so many things, this tradition has also succumbed to the values of capitalism, and is today a veritable money-spinner for certain participants.

To be a "real" russ these days, you have to chuck out a good deal of money:

The hat
The one thing you HAVE to have to be a russ. As mentioned, introduced by german students. Nowadays, it's a red hat with a black brim. Attached to the top of the hat is long fabric string you can tie symbols of different completed dares and challenges.

Examples of these are; you get a beer cap tied to your hat if you can drink a case of beer within a given time, a pine cone for having sex with someone in the woods, pink feather for making out with one of the same sex, black feather for beating up someone with a pink feather and so on.

Then, on may 16th (correct me if I'm wrong here, fellow countrymen), the day before our independence day, there's a ceremony where each russ is baptized, that is, given an (intended) funny name, which is then written in white letters on the black brim.

Lastly, you get to wear your hat on the 17th of may, our independence day. It's tradition for the russ to partake in the various parades on this day in a more or less detrimental manner.

Travel in Style
As there are several arrangments during the russetid (the span of time in which you are a russ) in outskirts of town if not in other cities altogether, it has become custom for people to club together and buy large (or smaller, depending on how many you are) buses.

These are then painted red and usually decorated with a large piece pertaining to the name of the bus (which should be something referring to sex or drinking, or preferably both, and contain a really lousy pun), the names of all the people on the bus and ads for sponsors you've managed to get to support you financially.

The interior of these buses are also regulary completely reconstructed, often to include things like couches, a tv, fridge and a bar.

But that's not all. Most "bus-builders" will also invest in a sound and light system of epic proportions, often with giant speakers on the roof of the bus. These then serve as boomblasters and disco lighting at the grand outdoor dancing/drinking/fournicating/puking (in no particular order) arrangements, where the biggest buses will line up in several circles, link their sound systems and blast music and disco lighting through the night.

But no bus is complete without a driver. Most crews will pay a non-russ to be their busdriver for the russetid, so noone will have to stay sober to drive the bus back and forth.

Some of these buses have a budget of well over 100,000£.

The clothes make the man
As mentioned, it started with the red hats. Now, it's big business. Many russ will buy entire wardrobes which can almost only be used during the russetid and never again. In addition, several variants have appeared over the years. If you've completed economic high school, you'll be a blue russ, if you've gone general studies, you'll be red russ (the original) and in later years there have also been incidents of white, black and orange russ.

Most important (in addition to the hats, off course), is the russedress (dress means suit in norwegian, by the way). Nowadays these come in all shapes and sizes, the most common one being the coverall with a zipper up front. You can also have carpenter's overalls, separate pants and jacket and you name it. Then you buy lots of letters and imagery to iron on to your suit (typically your name, the name of your school, RUSS 2003 and perhaps the name of your bus). The rest of the space of the suit will be filled with written greetings, jokes, drawings etc. from fellow students, so in the end, you should look like a complete mess.

Then you need a sweater (minimum one). This year, they'll probably have the RUSS 2003 logo either on the chest or the back, and the name of the school on the other side. If you want the college model, the hooded or the one with the zipper is up to you (you could get all three, of course). If you're on a bus, you'll probably need a bus sweater too.

Identify yourself
Now, what would be the use of investing in all these things if noone ever knew who you were? To prevent this from happening, you aquire russekort (russ "id" cards). With a picture (real, or not), a name (real, or not), an adress (real, or... you get it), a phone number, and a cheap joke, order a couple of hundred, swap'em with your friends and give to collectors (small kids are mad about these things, and will often perform various tricks to "earn" different cards).

Then there's accessories. Whistles, bamboo sticks, and many other useless, insignificant things.

Now you have everything you need to start being a russ. Being a russ is mostly drinking stupendous amounts of alcoholic beverages, engaging in as much unprotected an casual sex as possible, dancing, fighting, puking celebrate in other ways you see fit.

Not very different from how we normally behave, in other words.
