well stiven, why not go make urself some new "nice" threads with some of your very own "quality" posts in them and replace the threads about fish and teeth with some your very own "nice","creative","quality" threads

thats just the thing, if i dont have anything useful to start a thread about...i dont.

I dont have the need to make a thread if i got an ache in a tooth and wants someone to agree with me.

I dont have the need to start a thread about a topic thats has been discussed 10 times before.

If i come up with an idea about a topic that i reckognize needs to be discussed, or an idea about a topic that i think will contribute to this community...then i post it.

As you might have seen ive only made two threads (well three actually but one sucked so i deleted it ). And those two threads has a valid point in them.

As for example my football thread (as lord_echo mentioned), i dont think many threads has gotten so much attention on such short notice. It also has enough number of posts to be at the top 10 on this board. And its had a number of sequels... from football about champions league, american football... and about TOH at myths section.

Thats IMO a good idea, as for my other thread it discusses the upcoming (at that time) TOH season. Which also had a purpose since there wasnt a thread like that before.

But everything isnt just about being the actual thread starter either, even if im not the actual starter of a thread i can spark it enough to get people involved.

And if you knew your history slix tosser you would recognize this.

So learn your lesson: dont start throwing out accusations without atleast know what youre talking about

Nice to feel so popular

Well... I have a lot of commitments IRL now..

I am head cheerleader of my university squad and, well, some bad stuff has happened too, which also leaves me little time to log on.

I guess I just got kinda bored once everything had been said and done and dusted and all I was doing was tossing ( @Stiven).  Even tossing can get kinda dull!!

Also i mod at two other forums which are still a little... fresher(?) and obviously those were my priorities.

I'll try and drop by a little during summer break though, darlings xx

PS yeah, I'm still gorgeous

silx, if you dont like my posts...dont read em. Simple as that

I say something when i think its needed to be said. And i toss something when i think its needed to be tossed.

For the record though i know that my posts are appreciated by other people aswell, which i concider a bonus.

What history to know? lol
The history of disney... what do you think?

Off course i refer to the history of this place. Afterall, this place is what we are talking about isnt it? lol

And please show me were you said i was creative in the first post, what you said was basically "why are you complaining while youre not doing something to make it better yerself".

Which you have a point in btw, but ive contributed with so many ideas and ways to improve this place but when almost all of em is falling on def ears you kinda lose the will to keep doing it. Which was the reason why i refered you to the history of this place.

To me its just funny to see a n00b like you come here and make accusations about what other people has contributed to this place

Learn your history (and yes, im refering to HC this time too) and then we will discuss ok?

Personally I arrived at HC after many of the "great" members like Shae (sp?) had left, or towards the end of others time here like Milena and Cat. So no doubt this leaves me open to the accusation of not knowing all the history of the forum, but I will nonetheless add my own thoughts on the matter from my perspective. All below is opinion and not to be taken too seriously. Last thing I want to do is start another 3 page discusion on whether I'm right or not. This is my opinion, you can like it or not

I have read many of the threads from the distant past, and yes there were some great threads, most of which in some form or another have survived to the present day such as the football thread, the shop etc. But also amongst those early days there has been flame wars, (not going into whom or why, I wasn't there and therefore I don't care frankly) A fair share of poor threads, or ones not taken up by members for whatever reason. There was probably more good than bad from what I have read, but that's just my perspective.

But there has, in my time also been a number of what I consider good threads started also, like the Iraq thread, the discussions on religion and alternative history, or the Osama Bin Laden threads. Of course these don't appeal to everyone here, they're just my personal taste. It depends a lot on what people come here for. Some largely come for the online gaming aspect, others for the community, some for serious debates etc. Personally I don't play Heroes in any form much anymore and never really played it at all online (so sue me ) so the other aspects, namely the community and serious discussions are what matters to me.

Whilst accpepting that a large number of the most popular threads are older, established threads, there also has to be a recognition of the fact that these threads continue as they are today because even without the "great" members of the past, the contributions of the present members have kept the threads alive, have made them remain popular long after their founders have left the forum. The popularity of such threads today is also a testament not only to their creator, but also to those taking part all the way through.

And whilst being aware that many popular threads are either copied older threads, or older threads, I don't see this as being a huge problem. They've had time to develop their popularity, and at the end of the day why throw away popular threads for newer ones? Newer threads are sometimes damaged here through "tossing" or spam as it's called more commonly on other forums. Some would claim this helps keep the thread active, I would say it forces people to have to read through irrelevant posts to get to on topic stuff, that's just me though. I do know from personal experience that sometimes newer members feel less keen to create threads when most newbie threads can be open for criticism from reply one if it has been discussed even once before. This can lead to less will to create new threads if the result is simply a rebuttal.

But, the members that remain or have arrived since this "golden age" of HC each have their own ways of posting and adressing issues here. From the serious thread aspect, the arrival of people like Peacemaker and Khayman, Wolfman and Dargon (not sure how long the last 2 have been here sorry) have kept many of these discussions open and extremely valid when otherwise they would have died. They have interacted with longer term members like Bort or mods like Nidghrin and former mods like Romana to make for enlightening and interesting discussions IMO. As enlightening as the older posts from before I arrived.

But beyond that, the forum as it exists at present is no more than the sum abilities and opinions of it's members, guided by the Admin and Mods. It always was and always will be so. Because of this, if people feel that the forum is no longer how they would like it, or that people are not as..... entertaining as what once people were, well that's just bad luck I guess. The members make the forum what they wish of it (within the rules etc) and if they want to discuss things like toothache then that's their choice. I agree it's not MY choice, but I have the option to raise other subjects or ignore those in existence if I wish to.

No-one forces people to take part in threads, forums or the entire place. If we don't like the discussions we have 3 positive options:

A) Stay out of them
B) Try to encourage more constructive posting through examples
C) Create our own discussions

Now in saying that I know I will come into some flak from people. I am aware some members do try their best to do the above, and I am not accusing ANYONE of not doing so. All I'm saying is we can either sit around whining that the past was so brilliant, or we can go about or continue to go about making the present as brilliant. Or perhaps we could just simply accept that the past has gone, and people either don't want to discuss such matters anymore, or have different tastes in what they discuss. People here, and therefore the forum itself changes. We can either accept that and work with the situation as it is, or we can complain at how the old times were so much better.

I know which is more constructive........

Anyways that's all I wanted to say, not getting at anyone here or trying to say I'm perfect or do such constructive things. Just offering my view of the issue.

Good post PH, but IMO you seem to have missed the topic

What we are discussing here now is the quality of this forum now and how it was a year ago.

Off course its always nice to see your ideas on how to improve the current situation here but then please take it in another thread or start a new one. And if you do i will probably speak out my views there. (And who knows, but making such an inspirating thread you prolly even will get another cute little red star to your collection *hint* )

IMO Oldtimer and bort has a good point here, many members problably left disappointed of heroes4 and found other more interesting games instead.

But if you look purely at interesting threads the number a year ago was way higher than now. As i pointed out many of them are still alive today.

And you cant blame this solely on the fact that all members isnt as creative as they could be, because some people are more creative than others and will make more interesting threads. Thats just how it is.

@Catherine: You know ill go down tossing with you anytime baby

This bit says about the quality a year ago, discussing such things as longer term members, older posts and their quality:

Quote:

So no doubt this leaves me open to the accusation of not knowing all the history of the forum, but I will nonetheless add my own thoughts on the matter from my perspective. There was probably more good than bad from what I have read, but that's just my perspective.

And this bit about now, showing how i believe that there are recent interesting (to me granted) threads around and why some newer members sometimes feel less inclined to post:

Quote:

But there has, in my time also been a number of what I consider good threads started also, like the Iraq thread, the discussions on religion and alternative history, or the Osama Bin Laden threads. As enlightening as the older posts from before I arrived.

Sorry to repeat myself everyone, but I was discussing the quality of the forum then and now, as I have just shown. That's what? 2/3 of my post on topic, and 1/3 on the how we go about improving it..... I dunno about you, but I tend not to count out a post when the majority is on topic as opposed to off.

So no, I won't start another thread, because I was on topic in the first place for most of the post. And neither am I enticed by the idea of some dumb red star thanks.

You could of course argue there has been MORE interesting threads in the past, but we are after all discussing something entirely subjective. What I find interesting is not nessacarily what others would so it all really depends on the individual person. I personally don't much like either the football or shop thread as they aren't something I am interested in. Then again I wouldn't deny they are interesting to some people. The fact that popular threads are older ones though happens in forums all over the net. Ideas that prove popular are almost always going to have been posted before and it will get progressively harder to create new innovative threads. It's natural unfortunately and even if all of the older members returned you would still see repetition. You might get some newer innovative threads, but even so it would still be lesser than this "golden age"

hehe yes PH i know that the first 2 parts of your post was on topic, but since the last 4 parts wasnt since it discusses board improvements i suggested that you should make a seperate thread for that so the discussion here doesnt take that direction instead.

A) Because its a good idea for a thread how things can get improved. Why not the quality here is as high as it could be and so on.
B) Because of this thread will go off topic (likes its doing now) when people discusses improvements here instead of the differences.

And since these are two big and interesting subjects i think its better to discuss em seperatly instead of mixing em together and make this thread a mess

so there, i think you had a good idea. Now please follow it up instead of not doing so because i say so

Paragraph 1: Intro (On Topic)
Paragraph 2: My take on the past (On Topic)
Paragraph 3: My opinion on some recent threads (On Topic)
Paragraph 4: A agreement to the idea that older threads are purely the work of their founders and therefore there are new members with interesting thoughts (On Topic)
Paragraph 5: Raising the idea that older being popular is not bad and saying the present day attitudes of some members leave newer members feeling unwelcome(On Topic and off topic slightly as if you want to be pedantic that could be taken as a suggestion not to do those things)
Paragraph 6: Again suggesting new members have interesting ideas for discussions and interesting comments to make from my perspective(On Topic)
Paragraph 7 onwards: Entirely about improvement ideas (off topic)

(And no, I won't get pedantic enough to count lines/words)

I don't personally WANT to discuss the improvement issue, I was merely mentioning them so the entire thread doesn't look like some doom and gloom issue about how the present day is awful compared to the past. I personally am not discussing them, you raised them, and I replied as I am doing now. If you will just let the issue lie here and like (strange notion) discuss the other parts I raised then maybe it might have stayed on topic rather than discussing off topic issues. Had we not began discussing the off topic detail it would not appear a mess........ Hell had I not posted it the same, so sue me

Oh and I can't be bothered with raising the issue somewhere else, do a cut and paste someone and take the QP if it's offered. I don't mind if it helps sort things out I don't have the time or the care to rush round trying to improve the whole when I only spend time in a small part.  Oh yeah and btw I won't bother posting again, because guess what? It's looking like another one of those 3 page discussions that I'm not getting into any more.

Toodle-pip any way, have fun making some other pedantic, off topic remark about me being pedantic and off topic

lol why do you always have to make our discussions a fight?

Just because we dont share the same view doesnt mean we have to fight about everything

yes, i mentioned that this thread was going off topic. And therefor i suggested an IMO good idea for you to take this good idea of yours and make a new thread of it since its worth being discussed.

It wasnt meant as an attack like you seem to take it lol

Also i think its a shame that you first says that everyone should try and do their best for this place and making an A-C list to follow. And then say yourself that you "don't have the time or the care to rush round trying to improve the whole when I only spend time in a small part".

Because i think your contributions to HC could be alot, so from HC´s behalf i think its sad that you view things like that.

and i hope this wasnt "pedantic", because i see no point in discussing the paragraphs nor disect it to that since its obvious we dont share the same opinion of em anyway

another one of those "inspiring" replys you was talking bout a little earlier,eh?okay, whatever.

look,I didn't actually accuse you of whining, you are already guilty of that, what I said was:show the n00bies what those
"nice" and "quality" threads should look like, that u were talking about, from what I read of your reply is that you don't
actually have anything "nice" to say either!so basically you lack the ability to make good threads yourself(besides the 2
that were "important" as you said) while you yourself are whining that no one else makes good threads!

and one more thing:the fact that you have been here longer than me doesn't actually make you a better person or anything!

the point of this topic was to ask what was the difference between this place right now and this place a year ago, hudsons post was actually pretty on-topic!

huh?

how is me suggesting to make a thread about ways to improve this place not an inspiring thing?

Do you ever know what you are talking about silx?

And for the third time then: If you wanna know what those nice quality threads look back in the history. (And yes, im still refering to this msg boards history... not mine nor disneys or anyone elses ). I wont revive every good thread for you, if you wanna learn this place then its up to you. Not someone else to act your mommy here and show you everything.

And if you think i lack the ability to make good threads than thats your opinion. To be honest i couldnt care less what some wanna feel important n00b judges me for

But youre right about one thing though: the point of this thread was about discussing the difference between this place right now and how it was a year ago, and parts of PH´s first post was on topic yes... but the 2nd part wasnt and thats what would have pulled it off topic.

But im not so sure if you know what on topic is since you have spent the last posts of yours attacking me and my contribution here.

And no, the fact that ive been here longer than you doesnt make me a better person than you. But it makes me more experienced and that ive learned more about this place.
simple as that.

EDIT: "nice" to see that you still havent given up on me romana
