Ocean/Water Town

This is a repost for Diablo's request. Some messages were edited out cause they didn't adress this particular topic(Ocean/cove).

A Great New Town idea.  Posted 10-5-2000 01:55

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think a great new town would be the cove. I used some of my own ideas, and some from other posts to produce this complete and detailed look at a new castle. The town would be called the Cove. It would be located in the water. The hero types would be mermen and mermaids. Mermen would be the might heroes with attack 2, defense 0, power 0, knowledge, 0. The mermaid would be the magic hero with attack 0, defense 3, power 2, knowledge, 1. All heroes would have basic navigation.
The first level creature would be crabs, and lobsters.
The second level creature would be eels, and electric eels. Electric eels can attack 2 creatures at once, at half damage each, if adjacent.
The third level creature would be swordfish and the swordfish warrior.
The fourth level creature would sharks and great whites.
The fifth level would be trident soldiers and neptunians, who are ranged attackers.
The sixth level would be ice archers, and ice magi.
These are ranged attackers, and ice magi can attack all enemy creatures at once at lesser damage.
The seventh level creatures are pyhtons and sea serpents. The sea serpents would have 15 Att 50 Def 300 Health Dam 35-40. Speed 14 Extra Fast.
Tell me what you think!

Hi, I've also thought about a water town. Here are my suggestions to your ideas:
* why do mermen have 2 skill points while mermaids have 6, is this a typo?
* how would fish-creatures fight on land? ))
* ice archers and ice mage are a bit too similar to ice elemental in Armageddon's blade.

A water town would be the only town getting some stat advantages in sea battles. Maybe somehow they could travel unseen underwater?

Then there is the idea for sky-town, or cloud-town where heroes can do some flying. It would have lots of flies and lots of lightning.

Just some ideas,

Valera.

I think the idea is wonderfull! Just a few changes then it would be perfect! The new IV is suppose to be like Mist. I have the game HOMMII and I clicked the glowing door. Well then it showed alot of pictures of HOMM2. I don't know. They must be working on it for along time.

That's an INCREDIBLE idea! Wow, you're really creative! It would be neat if it looked like a little knot of coral on the outside, and then had shells and seaweed and caves and things like that on the inside.

using a water town  Posted 11-15-2000 20:32

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I like those ideas alot, but I would say that water isnt used very much on most maps... and if there was a water town I would hope that it would be easier to use water. In fact I don't see why it should take a days movement to get in and out of boats and that would make water a much easier part of heroes to use.

I actually would like to see the Conflux Town split into the 4 individual elements.

On a similar topic, I'd like to see the Elementals all become much more powerful creatures, all at lvl 6 or the equivalent.

Ok, but how do battle scenes work with sharks? Are they walking on two legs to fight giants or are they swimming? Or do they just fight amongst themselves? You can't just have a sea town unless the whole homm4 is an ocean. Or are these creatures only allowed on the water? That seems kind of unfair to whoever plays that town though...

And it should be sea serpents upgraded to krakens if there was such a thing as a cove.

Waterworld  Posted 3-13-2001 04:52

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm not crazy about an air town, but I had thought of a water town a while ago. It included a kraken as the toughest creature. It could be based on the monster from the old movie "Clash of the Titans" or a giant octopus type creature. There should be a mid level "Creature from the Black Lagoon" type monster.

Their attack strength, speed, and travel distance could all have bonuses in water.

What about this idea its more realistick  Posted 3-13-2001 11:59

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
i like the idea whit water creatures, but then the whole map have to be an occean map craps and all that would dry in the desert. but what about a Town ner the water like a pirat town where you could build Seadragons, neptunians, waterwizards, and all those creatures who has the ability to act on land. then all the pirat heroes would each start whit expert navigation. but an shark or a swordfish fighting in the forest that seems to cartoonish, like a little childs fantasi.

SOLUTION!  Posted 3-13-2001 19:58

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Water units should be neutral units belonging to the water group found at sea (must be shooters or flyers, think why), and only water elementals should be able to go on board (water made liquid human formed elementals which move by transforming into a puddle and "flowing"). There should be an Earth, Fire and Air groups of neutral units, each one with 6 or 7 monsters.

hmmm...  Posted 3-14-2001 03:31

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
i don't know, maby they could do some kind of a flood thing, haveing alot of the map covered by water that they can walk through, like a flooded grass land, or maby have the marsh be flooded out, but there HAS to be dry land, some say all flyers and shooters, but for flyers, thats not realy the water way, maby they could do a air castle, with water like creatures, (ie flying sting rays) making it a air / water castle, hm... keep guessing, there is a way for anything to happen

Water walkers  Posted 3-21-2001 22:01

I thought of an oceanic town way back when but didn't expand on it since it would be so hard to realistically balance the movement for this town. Hopefully with these new ideas on movement we can create something that is reasonable and feasable. Anyways, here's my take:

1) Ocean Heroes/Creatures(swimmers (and flyers perhaps)) can travel in water without the use of a boat. Can still use boats for acquisition of non swimming creatures.

2) Ocean Heroes/Swimmers have movement penalties for land(besides swamp perhaps) and cannot pass over desert.

3) A 2nd or 3rd lvl spell may be learned called 'summon rainstorm'(water spell) which would reduce the penalty for Ocean Heroes/swimmers on land and allow crossing of desert.
Basic- lasts 1 day, small movement increase.
Advanced- lasts 2 days, greater movement increase.
Expert- lasts 3 days, no movement penalties.

4) Oceanic creatures should be able to realistcally fight on land (ie has legs or wings). Some examples of these are:
-River Spirit/Dryad (swimmer and possible flyer)
-Mermen/Mermaid (swimmer, looks and moves similar to water elemental)
-Sea/Giant Snapping Turtle (swimmer, slow on land)
-Giant Squid/Kraken (swimmer, can scale castle walls)
-Harpies/Hags (flyer, of course this should be in the water town)
-Sea Snake/Serpent (swimmer)
-Water Dragon/Leviatha (swimmer)
-Crabs(swimmer)
-Lobsters(swimmer)
-Skate/Ray (swimmer and flyer, yeah i know they can't fly but maybe they're magical Skates/Rays)
-Plesiasaur (swimmer, similar to water dragon)
-Sea/Stinging Snail (slow, shoots?)
-Pirate (not a swimmer or flyer)
-Fire Newt/Salamandre (swimmer, breathes fire)

That's it so far, but i would really like to see more maps/creativity with water since it adds an interesting aspect of the game. I personally like going overseas and exploring other 'continents' etc.

Of course this water town will have an advantage/disadvantage in some maps but that is the way it is now anyways. More input is welcome.

Water town

Water town has so many aspects, but crab as a level 1 creature I think the dryads and mermaids would be better level 1 creatures, then work its way down sharks and killer whales etc all playing a part in it.  But how many towns are we going to end up having 10 or more??  I hope not.

The ones we currently have are enough just needs some massive overhauls in places.  with a total of 9.. 3 for each philo good, neutral and evil.  The one main difference i like to see is the change in alter of sacrifice with how it is used with each philo.

Water town - good - but isolated from the begining - how you gonna get your mines and stuff?

But it may happen by chance to be balanced with left of the game. Here you have lots of trees in water - which will be used for building the town (no castles/no rock). Water town must have free boats, or don't need BOAT at all - yep - this is sad fact - if this is a WATER TOWN - you don't need BOAT - then you'll probably need SPECIAL device to go on EARTH.

Hey, but if you don't need boat - cause your creatures - don't need boat. Like DO HORSE need ANOTHER horse - to walk on EARTH? I mean - they are well in the water and such... But if your LEADER took some army from the EARTH - blaah - well - easy one - they'll sink... except the flying ones, without feathers (Rocs). Fly Deadalus, fly - Icarus fell down - go on.

Ok - this should be in heroes - if you have only creatures that fly - you must fly - except CHICKEN like fly creatures - like you know... which one...

Forget about pirates, lets pirates live in Sid Meyer's Pirates and Pirates GOLD! (my second favourite game - or maybe the third second one).

Computer plays water town..

When thinking of this with a friend of mine.. we came to the solution, that A water town could be a computer player... that would function as a pirate.. Sending his troops on raids every now and then.. Capturing any mines and resources that come in their way..

.. After thinking some more on the idea.. we came to the conclusion that it probably wouldn't be such a good idea to add water town in the game.. As it would only be disturbing having a computer pirate raiding around the map..

This whole thing sound a little like the idea to add a new 3rd level... Which has been discussed.. and found a "not that good idea".. .

hmm ive already done a post on water towns and pirates but i cant find it. Oh well the main points were i think a pirate ocean island town should work as a computer controlled player to spice up the water.

I would also like to see pirates that raid your ship and if they win the battle they capture your items and hold your hero for ransom. You would be able to buy him back at at some pirate meeting place for a vast sum of money.

Pirates could be made up of a mixed group of creatures. I could see humans, orcs, trolls, dwarfs and elves units.

Pirates could also be able to come on land (a few squares only though) to raid the land and any castles near the coast. The pirate town would be guarded by a very fierce pirate leader.

If you destroy the pirates ocean island town you would not get the castle as it would be destroyed but loads of treasure and resources and all items that the pirates had captured. Of course pirates would not be in every game but could be added as a choice.

So what do you think?

Merman and merman could be both in it but with both different names.

Mermaid becomes Siren
Merman becomes Shalarin(Those green swamppeople from Darkstalkers with a big sail on their back)

Sea Demons are called Sahuagin BTW.

Water creatures that I love to sea?

Leviathan(Giant green Behemoth like creature.)
Morkoth(Half humans half octopus)
Wereshark(Like werewolf only then with sharks as animal)
Triton(good sea creatures that hold triton weapons)
Kelpie(Seaweed monsters that uses illusions to change landscapes and their own appearance)
Sirens + Shalarin ofcourse
And the sea demons called Sahuagin.

There are more creatures but most of them can't walk on land(Whale Leviathan and Kraken to call a few.)

I like this idea, generally

[if there's been another thread on this topic, I haven't seen it.  Sorry about any repeat ideas.]

1) Adventure Map movement:  A water-aligned town would not always have to start in the water.  Other towns don't always start on their home turf, why should this one?  If water continues to be the barrier-terrain it is now, the homeland of the aquatic town could be the current swamp or a new terrain like "wetlands," "floodplains," or something similar.

2) Units:  Since a fully developed town needs to function on all sorts of terrain, the developers would have to be careful to make all units amphibious rather than swimmers. There's no opportunity to use a swimming motion -- the battles are always either on land or on a boat, and the creatures use their battle-motion animations to get around the adventure map.  The most fish-like unit in H4, the sea monster, doesn't actually swim -- it moves rather like a seal or a sea lion.  The mermaids sit up on their tails and do a sort of wiggle-walk.  The developers could figure out other compromises for other aquatic critters.  Giant octopi or other tentacled monsters would be pretty easy to do with a crawling motion, using the tentacles to propel the body.  Finned fish-men, a la Creature-from-the-Black-Lagoon, would work.  They could introduce the seal-people of Celtic lore (selkies?).  Personally, I think crabs and/or lobsters would be hilarious 1st level units, if the animators get their locomotion right.  They're small, they are plausible fighters with their big claws, and they don't need awkward adjustments to move on land.  No, they don't fit in perfectly with the fanstasy theme, but neither do wolves or boars or a number of other creatures.

3) Heroes:  While the mermaid/mermen split is neat (and would make a great hero-species), it's also kinda non-PC.  The similar gender split in the H3 Fortress town heroes bugged me.  Instead, pirates could be introduced as a might hero class -- the series has permitted names to double as units and heroes before; i.e. "crusader" in H4.  Enchanters or another general magician label could work for magic, since that's what they did with Order and Chaos.  While Navigation would be a theme-consistent skill to grant Pirates, it's useless on some maps.  Something along the lines of Pathfinding would make the class more desireable in more situations.  The magic class's skill would of course be reliant on whatever the magic system is in H5.

4) Computer controlled "town" full of treasure?  Wouldn't this just be another utopia-like adventure object?  The only new feature would be the ability for creatures to emerge from the object and attack players without provocation (current neutral creatures do not snap up resources, so why should these?).  While this may be an interesting innovation, it strikes me as a feature entirely separate from the idea of a new town.  Such an object could be created using current creatures.

Just my 2 cents.

Ocean/water town seems interesting...

However, I would rather have this concept not as a town, but a dwelling where you fight a certain number of water creatures to recruit them.

The ocean town will be a dwelling that consists of pirates, mermaids, sea monsters and sea horses. You fight 200 pirates, 40 mermaids, 20 sea horses and 5 sea monsters. After you fight them, you can recruit these creatures whenever you wish, as long as it is under your control. You can recruit 20 pirates, 6 mermaids, 3 sea horses, and 1 sea monster.

Pirates, sea monsters and Mermaids are like Heroes 4, the Sea horse will cost 700 gold and have ranged attack and normal melee, Mermaids will cost 200 gold, while Sea monsters will cost 4500 gold + 3 gems.

How is that?
