Heroes 3 Complete and XP

I searched every topic I could find over the last year for this and couldn't find help for my particular problem.

I am running windows XP and got Heroes 3 Complete to install without a hitch.  However, it will not play.

When I attempt to run the executeable, it opens the loading game screen and then brings up the Microsoft message saying "Heroes has encountered a problem and must shut down" with the send/don't send option. I've tried in other compatability modes to no avail.

I have a purchased copy.  Non-pirated. Not burned. Not cracked.

I have found no available windows patches in my searching.

If anyone could direct me to fix this issue, I would be most appreciative.

If I overlooked something obvious, I apologize for beating a dead horse.

=x

I appreciate your taking time to reply. =)

However, the first thread doesn't really seem to apply, since I can get the game installed just fine.

The second link is a patch of homm3.  But, is that for Heroes of might and magic complete?  I have seen no patches anywhere for the complete version.

Anyone?

i believe there must be some compatibility problems with your system.

hit ctrl alt del (go into taskmanager) turn off all non-essential programs.

install the software

run it.

something is running in the backround causing the problems, simply a matter of figureing out what it is.

ahhh

ahh... okay, I will give that a try tonight.  There's a bunch of stuff running... no spyware but a bunch of Nvidia associations and so on.

Maybe that will help.

sigh

No, none of this works for XP.

Does anyone know how I might play Heroes 3 Complete under XP?

I followed the suggested steps and it changed nothing.

Does it matter that I have DX9?

So frustrating =(

Well I'm kinda new to the series.  I bought everything at once and I'm still learning the installation and running quirks of each game.

I bought HoMM Platinum, which includes H3 Complete.  I have WinXP and DX9.  The game installs and runs fine.

I can tell you that changing the compatibility mode is not necessary, and that there are no patches.  You should have version 4.0.  Ignore any 4.0.1 patch you find.  That's for the Mac.

You might try running DXDIAG and disabling hardware accelleration in the Sound tab.  Or, if it's already disabled, enable it.  Some of the MM games need a certain setting and I can't remember offhand if it makes a difference with Complete.

Maybe run Windows Update? A virus scanner? SpyBot?  Disable your firewall?  That last one may sound weird but some games insisted on internet access before they'd run the first time.

If none of that works, well...  I had a few programs suddenly generate those "Encountered A Problem" boxes after working fine for months.  I decided that WinXP needs to be reinstalled every 6 months just like all the other Windows versions.  Drastic, I know, but it worked..

Good luck.

hmm

I am putting in the play disc.  You cannot run the game from the install disc.

I have turned the sound accelleration all the way down.

I've tried running in normal XP mode.

I've tried all the other modes.

I've tried changing my color scheme to 16 bit... 800x600, 256 colors... many things.

I have scanned my system thoroughly for spyware/viruses.

I do not play from behind a firewall.

I do not have norton's or any other such thing running in the background.

I went to run/msconfig and shut down everything non-essential.

Help! =*(

Time for something drastic!

I don't think there's much more help we can give.  The suggestions work for us, so it should have worked for you.  It's gotta be either a problem with your install, or a problem with your OS.

Uninstall H3 Complete.  Run Regedit.  Search for and delete all entries for "3DO" and "Heroes".  This will break any other 3DO games you have installed.  Run Windows Update.  Then reinstall Complete and hope it works.

If it still crashes, I think there's only one option left.  Back up important data, format the HD, and reinstall XP.

Ooh, wait, I just thought of something:  Update your sound, video, and display drivers directly from their websites.  Maybe you'll get lucky.

My opinion :

You have to have the original or cracked two cd's of Heroes Complete ...

You don't have to have conflicts between devices ...

Sometimes crashes on WinXP Home ...

I suggest you erase your hard-drive ... reinstall all ...

I read the posts again and i reached this conclusion ....

It's Microsoft's fault ... so ... you must have Windows XP Professional , get a tweaker and disable the error sending ...
Check your processor and motherboard temperature ...
Use a memory testing utility ... maybe you have errors ...
Check your CODECS !!! There may be a codec /some codecs that don't allow you to play the into movie ...

Hope it works !!

Appreciate

I appreciate the feedback.  However, I'm not sure exactly what to do with it.

I have a purchased copy of heroes.  The temp is fine across the system.

I have run windows update a number of times.  No updates for my sound card are available.  I have a sound blaster audigy.

I will re-check to see if there are updates for my 5900 FX video card.

How do I disable error sending?  And how would that stop the program crashing?

I LOVE this game.  After heroes 2 it's my favorite ever.  I ask a little patience from the community until I get it working.  Anyone that can think of anything, or knows a resource I might tap into to fix this will be my hero....  of might and magic.. /duck

what part of the world do you live in.. maybe I can help you via, MSN or IRC.

re-install your sound drivers, but it seems weird only H3c doesnt work.

a format/reinstall would most likely solve the problem I would probably do that.. but if you are not keen on reinstalling everything, and losing all your save games/pictures/video (you will forget to back up something)

I would try a few other things first.

Bring your CD's to a friends house, try it on a different PC if it crashes you may have a bugged version of the CD, then return it.

if it works, then there is something wrong with your PC.

remember when installing new drivers, disable the internet, remove the current drivers (right click my computer... properties... drivers (second tab middle button) then find the drivers, check there location in the pc, write down the files somewhere, then hit remove device. use find to find the drivers on your system, Delete them (so windows doesnt re-use them) and then run the driver install program)

if you left the internet on windows has a tendancy of downloading what it thinks is right (which is usualy wrong)

I wont be home tonight, but if you want to talk via MSN contact me @ alpha-draco@shaw.ca

I live in Central Standard Time -6:00

thanks

Thanks for the reply.

I tried to run it on a Win 98 system and it runs just fine.  The problem isn't the discs.  I just can't get it to run in any other compatability mode.

I'm a bit hesitant to mess with the sound drivers since EVERYTHING else works.  Without exception.

I'm wondering if it's the fact that I have a dvd drive.  But, that's difficult to believe since it runs all my other CDROM games without a hitch (although might and magic 6 has no music =(  .

And I live in Michigan.  So frustrating =x

ill be home tonight if you wanna gimme a shout, we can work this through (im gonna be bored anyhoo my gf is outa town)

i take it you dont have a cd rom drive in your system as well? or another DVD drive on a different system you could try it out on?
