The best units in this game are without doubt sprites. On random maps choosing conflux and upgrading pixies early will give you a decisive advantage. They are very fast (9-10) and no retaliate. With high morale its even possible to take first week (on 200%) lots of shooters.

I agree, Salamader, but how about a long, or even a medium game, when pixies don't have the first move anymore, and they are slaughtered by hundreds?

Man, I was speaking about best unit in the game regarding pixies level, of course. We know archangel is great  , but pixies, regarding their number and cost, are the best monster to start a game, from far.

favorite town
my favorite town is inferno, i used to hate it but now i love it. great overall speed early in the game with efreets by day 3 usually.
Pit lords are awesome with there ability to raise dead as demons, nothing like leading you 100 imps to slaughter only to be raised as 20 demons. It takes some skill to use the ability properly.
Inferno often gets armeggedon, the best spell in the game if you have a good number of efreets.
THe arch devil is nice and fast and with no retaliate, even better.
THe cerebri with no retaliate at level 3 monster is great, plus the 2 troop attack is nice when used.
the inferno heroes are not the best but there are some good ones.

1. Necropolis (only on L/XL maps) - lots of skele, enough vamps, more towns increase necromancy very well. Fav heroes - Thant (actually not so much), And the other one who is giving $350 each day.
2. Fortress - the best defense - basilisks, gorgons, hydras are good defenders - even if you don't have hero garnisoned. Of course here - Tazar. I need that defense because i use FLIES&WYVERNS to attack, and Tazar on level 20+ makes great defense (30%!!)
3. Stronghold (only for Small/Medium maps) - really good start - but you have to find another town soon with Craig Hack (i'm always playin' with it when i'm with barbs).
4. Rampart (for large maps - to have extra one or two of them) - because of... TREASURE!!! - money are the most important thing at the endshpiel of a LARGE/XL map. Having two or more ramparts changes a little bit your strategy - because you tend to buy creatures later - in order to have more money to get the better percentage at day 1.
5. Wizard - good for begining - to open the tower to see around - or if you took enemy's castle like this - to see what's around.
6. Inferno - good idea are the tunnels connecting different infernos - but didn't worked for me (too expensive).
7. Dungeon - great for making your mana - good to have one - or even not to have - just to take at day 1 to refill yourself - once you got the artifact which restores your mana - you don't really needs dungeon. Dragons are just not strong as they were in heroes2. And not having way to put some magic on them - really - no reason to play with them. Fav creature - EYES! (cheap, and strong)
8. Conflux - hmm... very very very... hmm.. i don't know
9. Castle - well, well - boring, but very strong (have to admit it). Best creatures - Marksmen&cavalry. Pikey's are good but often lose how to control them.

STRONGHOLD!
i tthink stronghold is a good town because of
behemoths and ceap goblins and it is strong against
attacks on the wall.
PS but it have a bad mage guild.

All towns are just as good, but i do have a favorit to play with
1. Castle
2. Rampart
The rest is equal to me. The only problem is Castle is superexpensive and therefor not always a good choice. Rampart still has a fort on the end of the week, that sux.

Not going really into this...
But...
I think it's very hard to say which towns are better than others but I would say that some towns like Castle, Tower and Dungeon are more flexible to play with and you can use them almost any map. But example Fortress is only good in some maps and Inferno in some occasions. If we take well balanced map all towns has pretty good chances but if we take hundred different kind of maps and players in "same level" I would bet money for castle, tower and dungeon that they win more than others.
But maybe it's more about opinion and how do you play with different towns than about which are really "the best towns". I won't even comment Conflux because it is really mixed up I thing all those creatures in different levels and Phoenixes that grow much faster than other 7th level units.
Somehow I have feeling that in HoMMIV towns are better balanced compared to others. Still this is only guessing, nothing else...

My favourite town would be either the Rampart or the Fortress.
Both have excellent creatures and are reasonable to purchase.
I would have picked the Castle but the cost of an angel or Arch-angel really cuts into your money.

Even though this post as old as hell, thought I'd give a list of towns in the order I like them favorite to least favorite
1.Fortress, Cuz the creatures are all sweet and have good status abilities
2. Like the creatures here too, especially Dragons and Medusas and Beholders.
3.Rampart
4.Tower
5.Stronghold
6.castle
7.Necropolis
8.Inferno

Wrong you may think me, but I did attack lots of ABs with lots of AAs......was devastating and didn't get the chance to resurrect. Thinking back, though, there may have been other extenuating circumstances - been a while since I played that game - we may have been battling on cursed ground or opponent had Recanters Cloak....both of which would have elminated the Archies resurrecting. No matter, played right, any town can potentially beat any other.

Rampart
My favorite is Rampart!
Great Creatures (unfortunately I don't like dwarves), rangers get the best skills, TRESURY and the good and peaceful atmosphere.
Beside that, I play with Fortress and Conflux...

favourite town
My personal favourite town is Fortress(obviously)
The creatures in that town are unique. They also look pretty cool.
Hydras and Mighty Gorgons together are a very good combination.

Titan_King, I agree with most of your comments, but just to disappoint you, that's Ozzy Osbourne's avatar.
Another eason why Fortress is my favourite town is because there are a great diversity of creatures: 1 shooter, 2 flyers and 4 walkers.

i have no favorite. But if i had to pick i would say conflux or castle. I just like the speed of both and growth of the phonxies.

rampart rule !
as people said before about rampart it is the best town and enjoyful to play. c.captain, fast s.pegasi, unicorn and gold dragon is great creature to play. the town also give good spell, gold and mine.
oh yeah, this is my first time here...... welcome to my self !
