If you ask a Romanian who is the all-time best Romanian player, you'll generally get two answers: Hagi or Dobrin! If you ask an older person, you'll certainly hear Dobrin.
He is not as known as Hagi because he wasn't allowed to leave by the communist regime - Real Madrid wanted him and offered 2 million dollars for him. At that time, it was the biggest transfer fee in the history of football.
But that was 35-40 years ago. Dobrin is now remebered only by Romanians. He died in 2007.

Yes,if Dobrin could have played for Real Madrid and other big clubs,he certainly would have been better known by everyone now.I was very sad when I heard he died.Although I don't like FC Arges that much,I'm sorry they were relegated,I mean, they won the other matches fairly...

Yes of course...in Romania we call it "The Golden Generation"(Generatia de Aur).Sadly we lost in the quarterfinals of the 94' World Cup with Sweden, following the penalty shootout...it was Romania's biggest performance in a World Cup,but we could have played against Brazil in the semi-finals...oh well, that's football...Nowadays the best players are Adrian Mutu and Cristian Chivu, but they can't play forever, and I certainly hope new good players will arise...I'm wishing for another Golden Generation.

Ukraine was also a surprise in 2006.
Europa League starts this week. Among the most interesting fixtures we have (all these matches are pretty one-sided actually):
1. Steaua Bucharest vs. Ujpest Budapest
2. Tobol vs. Galatasary Istanbul
3. Aalborg BK vs. Slavija
4. Rosenborg Trondheim vs. Karabakh
5. FC Basel vs. Santa Colona
6. Anorthosis Famagusta vs. Petrovac
Let's play a betting game!
I say (agg. scores):
1. 6-1
2. 0-4
3. 4-1
4. 3-1
5. 9-0
6. 3-2

So, the Champions League play-offs were yesterday (and the day before). Here are my two cents:
Celtic - Arsenal 0-2
No comment. Arsenal are the better team, but it's a pity two of finest British clubs meet so early, and that one of them is going to Europa League.
Lyon - Anderlecht 5-1
An expected outcome. Lyon is a fine club, not an outstanding one, but they're above the average. And Anderlecht is a sub-mediocre team that lives in the past. Champion League speaking.
Timisoara - Sttutgart 0-2
Too bad my compatriots couldn't do much. Anyway, nobody expected them to qualify in the play-offs when they were drawed against UEFA Cup holders the previous round. They'll make some nice matches in the Europa League, I'm sure.
Levski - Debrecen 1-2
What the...? They can't defeat Schalke in the UEFA quarter-finals in 2006. They can't even make a draw against Chelsea, Barca and Werder in 2007. I understand. But after the Tampere episode, this. It's the most emarassing result, the most shocking one IMO? What happened tp Bulgarian soccer. And CSKA had some problems with Derry City.

Senegal were overrated, and Korea was helped by the judge.
The biggest surprise in the football of all the time (imo) is when Greece got the European cup.

I watched the match... well FC Levski is pretty weak now, they actually sux... They got to the third round only thanks to luck, at the first one they played with team from Andorra and on the second one with Baku (Azerbaijan). They were also pretty lucky to play with Debrecen (just look at the others, Celtic got Arsenal and Timisoara - Sttutgart ). Levski is in crisis as well as the other two big bulgarian teams - CSKA and Litex. Levski got hard time in wining the national cup... so it's not really a surprise... Last year they were beaten by BATE Borisov, and Zilina...
Still, who know they may beat Debrecen with 2-0 in Hungary (just LoL!)
BTW that Tampere United thing was a shame...
Still the bulgarian team with better euro matches is CSKA.

The only "help" Korea recieved was vs Italy in my eyes. But so was Bulgaria in the quarter final vs Germany 1994, because the goal made by Voeller (which would have been the 2-0) was clearly a regular goal. But things like that happen in football.

I have to agree here...no doubt. Close followed by the world cup win of germany 1954 vs the "undefeatable" hungarians.

People in Germany don't like that match, after it Lechkov was kicked out of Hamburger, because of his goal against Germany... Anyway I don't remember that much the game... maybe there was a mistake, but on the semi-finals there was clear help for Italy. So I was a bit happy to see how they fall against Korea in 2002

Don't put us in such a bad light here Vokial Letchkov stayed 2 more years (until 1996) in Hamburg before he went to Olympique Marseile
But the scenario you described happened exactly to the korean guy who shot the decesive goal vs Italy. He was playing in Italy that time. And he was fired there right after the tournament

I'm sure Serbia will go to the World Cup.I can't say the same thing about my country Romania...although we managed to get a draw with France on Saturday,we're still six points behind them.
I think that another interesting match is England vs Croatia.

Quote: Big night on Wednesday! Serbia is hoping for at least a draw vs France in Belgrade, which would take us to the World Cup. Any other interesting matches?
Group 1:
Hungary vs Portugal
Extremely important for Portugal. If they don't win, they won't participate in 2010.
Group 2:
Latvia vs Switzerland
If Latvia wins that game, 3 countries will have the same amount of points (Greece) and placed on spot 1 in the chart while 2 more matches to play for each of them!
Group 3:
Northern Ireland vs Slovakia
no. 2 vs no.1 in that group. If Slovakia wins, they made it to south africa, if not, even Poland as 3rd in that group will still have a chance then.
Slovenia vs Poland
4th vs 3rd in that group. Both have same amount of points. The winner will still have a chance, while a draw will be "deadly" for both!
Group 4:
Wales vs Russia
Russia has to win that game to still have a chance for direct qualifikation by winning vs Germany in octobre.
Group 5:
Bosnia vs Turkey
If Bosnia won't lose, their participation in the play offs are quite sure. Turkey has to win to claim that 2nd spot themselves. First place is already reserved by Spain.
Group 6:
Belarus vs Ukraine
If Ukraine wins and Croatia will (most likely) lose to England, they claim 2nd place (which will be qualifier for the play offs) and Croatia only 3rd. And Croatia has only 1 more game to play then, while Ukraine will have 2 more left
Group 7:
Serbia vs France
If Serbia won't lose, their 1st spot will most likely be reserved, while France still can't be sure about 2nd spot and play offs, because:
Romania vs Austria
Romania's chances are very low to reach 2nd spot, while Austria will have a good chance to reach that spot IF France loses to Serbia!
Group 8:
Italy vs Bulgaria
If Italy won't lose, their first spot in that group is reserved. If Bulgaria wins, they still have a (low) chance to reach 2nd spot against Ireland.
Group 9:
Scotland vs Netherlands
Netherlands have their first spot secured, while Scotland has to win to be sure to have enough points being one of the 8 best 2nd placed teams of all 9 groups, because 1 2nd placed team will NOT qualify for the play offs. Currently, this is Scotland. If they lose, even Norway will have a chance to claim 2nd spot with a win against Macedonia. But they would still have not enough points to reach the play offs. So only Scotland has a chance here...
