Sigh, the draw vs France wasn't so disappointing as it was the game. But Serbia should be able to defeat either Romania or Lithuania next month and qualify.
On a similar note, as far as I remember we haven't beaten a favorite since, well, ever. We've had lots of draws, but no win yet. Hopefully we won't put in a disappointing showing in South Africa like we did in World Cup 2006 or Euro 2000.
Interestingly, Croatia seems to be closer to play offs today despite 1:5 vs England, thanks to the fact that Ukraine didn't manage to beat Belarus.

Yep, yesterday Ukraine's match was too inexpressive. Though there is a small chance to beat England, cause England have already garanteed it's first place and have old offences on Croatia.
Interestingly in Group 1 - I think in the end the difference in goals will be count for Sweden and Portugal. 1:0 against Malta is too bad for Sweden.

Yes,I saw the match and it's pretty disappointing that Serbia didn't win although the French goalkeeper Lloris was sent off and France had to play with 10 men almost the entire match. But I still think Serbia will finish first in the group.

It's funny that Croatia was beaten 1:4 and 1:5 by England, but they still might go to the play-offs...

I ofc watched it. Horrible game by Poland. Many simple mistakes, no tactical plan at all, key players failed, the team lacked in speed horribly too. On a sidenote, our national coach lost the job after the match. Yeah, it was that bad.

Not really. Ukraine has 2 more games to play (vs England and @ Andorra), while Croatia only has 1 more (@ Kasachstan). So Croatia can't manage place 2 by themselves. If Ukraine wins both games, they will be placed on 2nd spot.

Let's see how the results from yesterday effect each team refering to their chances of getting qualified for WC Southafrica 2010
Group 1:
Hungary vs Portugal 0:1
Extremely important for Portugal. If they don't win, they won't participate in 2010. Portugal still has a chance, but they are 2 points behind Sweden. Both have 2 more games to play (not against each other). Denmark should be through on spot 1, so it's only about the play off spot between Portugal and Sweden.
Group 2:
Latvia vs Switzerland 2:2
If Latvia wins that game, 3 countries will have the same amount of points (Greece) and placed on spot 1 in the chart while 2 more matches to play for each of them! Big luck for Switzerland. Not only could they manage to score the second goal to reach a draw short to the end of the game, but Greece only had a draw vs Moldavia. So Switzerland seems to be through on spot 1, while Greece still has to fear Latvia. Their next game is against each other! Greece at home.
Group 3:
Northern Ireland vs Slovakia 0:2
no. 2 vs no.1 in that group. If Slovakia wins, they made it to south africa, if not, even Poland as 3rd in that group will still have a chance then. Slovakia seems to be through (5 points ahead by 2 more games to play) on spot 1. After the loss of Poland @ Slovenia (0-3), even Tchechia has a small chance for reaching 2nd spot in that group. Nortern Ireland seems to be out, because they have same points as Slovenia, but already 1 more game played.
Slovenia vs Poland 3:0
4th vs 3rd in that group. Both have same amount of points. The winner will still have a chance, while a draw will be "deadly" for both! Goodbye Poland
Group 4:
Wales vs Russia 1:3
Russia has to win that game to still have a chance for direct qualifikation by winning vs Germany in octobre. Germany won their game aswell (4:0 vs Azerbaidschan), so they are still 1 point ahead. The game in Russia in octobre will be the decesive match in that group.
Group 5:
Bosnia vs Turkey 1:1
If Bosnia won't lose, their participation in the play offs are quite sure. Turkey has to win to claim that 2nd spot themselves. First place is already reserved by Spain. Goodbye Turkey
Group 6:
Belarus vs Ukraine 0:0
If Ukraine wins and Croatia will (most likely) lose to England, they claim 2nd place (which will be qualifier for the play offs) and Croatia only 3rd. And Croatia has only 1 more game to play then, while Ukraine will have 2 more left. Ukraine is only 2 points behind Croatia (They lost 1:5 in England). The next game is vs England, who are already qualified, so maybe they won't send their best team! (Remember: Croatia kicked out England from the Qualifying for the Euro 2008 in Switzerland by winning IN England. So I don't think England would be very sad if Croatia won't make it this time.) If Ukraine manages to win, they reach spot 2 and Croatia is out!
Group 7:
Serbia vs France 1:1
If Serbia won't lose, their 1st spot will most likely be reserved, while France still can't be sure about 2nd spot and play offs, because: Serbia seems to be through, while France can still lose their spot vs Austria (not very likely, but who knows?)
Romania vs Austria 1:1
Romania's chances are very low to reach 2nd spot, while Austria will have a good chance to reach that spot IF France loses to Serbia! Romania is out, while Austria still has a small chance (If France won't be able to beat the Faroer Islands ).
Group 8:
Italy vs Bulgaria 2:0
If Italy won't lose, their first spot in that group is reserved. If Bulgaria wins, they still have a (low) chance to reach 2nd spot against Ireland. Bye bye Bulgaria
Group 9:
Scotland vs Netherlands 0:1
Netherlands have their first spot secured, while Scotland has to win to be sure to have enough points being one of the 8 best 2nd placed teams of all 9 groups, because 1 2nd placed team will NOT qualify for the play offs. Currently, this is Scotland. If they lose, even Norway will have a chance to claim 2nd spot with a win against Macedonia. But they would still have not enough points to reach the play offs. So only Scotland has a chance here... Norway won their game vs Macedonia 2:0 and claimed 2nd spot, but it seems very likely this won't be enough to claim one of the 8 best 2nd spots of the 9 groups.
The 8 best teams on second spot of each group will have a play off (2 games, home and on road), where the 4 winners will go to South Africa, while the losers stay at home.

Actually Poland can still get to play-offs and World Cup Finals, but the scenario is extremely unlikely, and 2 wins may not be enough, some draws of other countries are also required.
But nobody believes in it after the catastrophe of yesterday.

The problem for Poland is, they need Slovenia to loose their last game vs San Marino, because they are 3 points ahead. (While Poland needs 2 wins from the last 2 games...@ Tchechia, and vs Slovakia)
But how the hell should that happen?
San marino hasn't won a single game in the qualifiers in the last 20 years. Their current score: 9 games, ZERO points, 1:44 goals

Romania didn't played very well, but I think they should have beaten Austria. We had quite a few goal-scoring opportunities, but when you do things like this... 0:45 video.
We are out, sadly. And to think we easily won our qualifying group for the EURO 2008, finishing with the fourth most points of all the teams.

This has got to be one of the worst qualification campaigns ever for Romania.Ok,two draws against France, not bad.But 0-3 at home with Lithuania? And we could only win against against Lithuania and Faroe...
I can't say I expected Romania to finish first, but I didn't think it would be this bad.

France isn't that strong lately.
About Bulgaria's lost, well it was over long ago. We can be better than Ireland, but our lazy players don't show it. And Italy is... Italy
Anyway, I was not thinking to post about the World cup qualifications, but for the Champions League and Europa League, how is your favourite team going? From the bulgarians Levski lost against Villarreal, nothing surprising here, they are going to lose all games till the end, I only fear that UEFA will forbid us to have 4 teams on qualification if they discredit like this again... CSKA got 1-1 with Fulham, and they could win the game... to bad they did not.

Romanian teams in the European Cups
Romanian League: Liga I
Number of teams sent in the European Cups: 6
The teams sent:
1. Unirea Urziceni (champions, UEFA Champions League group stages)
2. FC Timisoara (runner-ups, Champions League 3rd qualifying round)
3. Dinamo Bucharest (3rd place, Europa League play-offs)
4. CFR Cluj (4th place, Europa League play-offs)
5. FC Vaslui (5th place, Europa League 3rd qualifying round)
6. Steaua Bucharest (6st place; earned European Cups entry via Romanian Cup, 2nd qualifying round)
1. Unirea Urziceni
Finishing: 1st (Liga I Champions), quarter finalist (Romanian Cup)
Colors: White-blue
Nickname: Chelsea of Ialomita
Traditional Rival: N/A
Unirea Urziceni is an unknown team not only in Europe, but also in Romania. The shock champions of Liga I, they earned the first promotion in the first flight only 3 years ago (and then they were the last team to qualify, and in a season where more teams than usually promoted due to change of league format).
Urziceni are an underdog team, where the key players are fotballers thrown away by other clubs. No one gave them a chance at winning the league, not even remotely. But they won most of the matches with the weak teams and, while not shinning in the derbies against the heavy teams, they managed to take the leading seat only inches before the finish line. Unirea knew how to keep it.
Trivia:
*An interesting fact is that Unirea, despite being champions, comes from the littlest Romanian town with a team in Liga I. At 17.000, Urziceni is by far the least populated town in the history of the Champions League. The whole population of Urziceni can barely fill a tenth of Wembley. Burnley FC has 2 cities of Urziceni in it's stadium at each home game.
*Unirea Urziceni roughly translates in Needle United.
European run:
Unirea was drawn in a group with FC Seville, VfB Stuttgart and Glasgow Rangers. Try to imagine this as a Champions League group:
FC Seville
Glasgow Rangers
VfB Stuttgart
Needle United
There are stronger groups in the Europe League
Unirea lost their first match against Seville, 0-2 in Spain (yeah, a big surprise here).

Unirea is lucky, they're in a group without a very big team, like Barcelona,Real Madrid,Liverpool,Man.Utd,Bayern,AC Milan, etc.Beginner's luck,I guess.Although Sevilla and Stuttgart seem to be the stronger teams,I think that Rangers and Unirea also have their chance to qualify.

sorry for late reply... actually no, Poland doesn't need San Marino to defeat Slovenia But we won't win the eliminations ofc, still, we can qualify to play-offs from 2nd position if we win 2 matches AND certain countres draw or lose (but not San Marino). I'm not exactly familiar with the results that MUST happen if Poland wants to go through, but they are not very unrealistic.
Possibly, the most unrealistic part is... Poland winning the last two games Especially with a new coach and disorganized team after the departure of Beenhakker.
