Heroes V: HC Variation

The purpose of this thread is to summarise the best ideas of the Heroes Community, past and present, and to place them in this thread. There are two parts to this thread. The first, is to present what you think are the best ideas you have seen from the Heroes Community. This could be from about 1-10 proposals. I will demonstrate the most favourable method of conveyance.
Ideas Should Not Include:
Town Proposals – Too immense
Ideas from other forums
Ideas Should Include:
A link to the idea or where it was posted. (not necessary, but very helpful)
A small outline of the idea

The second part of the thread is a small questionnaire, similar to Djive’s, but shorter, and to do more with the broader elements of Heroes V, and also ideas concerning it.

------------
Part 1
------------
The following are my suggestions:

Will towns being placed atop hills or mountains affect the radius that the town provides?

I was hoping for this to occur in Heroes IV, because it would be more strategic to construct a town on top of a mountain so that you would have a better view of the land. The same goes for mines, lookouts, etc.

Heroes in Combat – Yes or No?

Quite a large debate, so all of my opinions won’t be posted here. I think there should just be duels – hero to hero. We saw this in Heroes IV in some campaigns such as the True Blade Campaign where it was 1 on 1. Now with the extended battlefield, it could be possible for the heroes to fight each other, and the creatures to fight each other. The heroes would have two responsibilities; they could cast spells, or fight the other hero. Defeating the other hero means the creatures lose all the bonuses the hero provides. So, the question is, help your own army, or deplete your opponent’s.

Art Style – Fantasy or Medieval?

From the most recent drawings and concept art shown, it is leaning towards the former, without any sign of medievalism in the few released so far. It is pretty clear that this is the art style that is intended throughout the entire game. It is, in my opinion, the worst art style to grace the Heroes Series, because it strays so far from the traditional Heroes I-III style. These were more medieval, and had likenesses to King’s Bounty. The Heroes V developed by NWC went back to these roots.

Diversify towns

The number of buildings able to be built in Heroes IV decreased significantly from Heroes V. While this is troubling, and I am hoping for it to be rectified, I would like to propose another idea: Seeing as Nasty isn’t active anymore, I would like to propose the idea on his behalf.
The idea was to have a town with two sectors, the inner and outer town. The inner town is where the hero, and the larger, stronger creatures dwelled, and this is where most of the important occurrences took place. The outer town was home to the weaker creatures, and was less heavily defended. In sieges, if the outer town fell, it didn’t mean the inner town did. The inner town had structures like the city hall, and if the inner town fell, the town truly was defeated. It provides a sense of a castle being a true castle, not just a single garrison, two garrisons also makes towns harder to capture. All credit to Nasty for the idea. http://www.heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?FID=5&TID=8496&pagenumber=5

Line of Sight

Another old discussion that has resurfaced. I was slightly disappointed with Heroes IV’s implementation of this feature, in that trees did not influence the Line of Sight. In my first battle, I hid my creatures behind some trees, only to discover that they could still get hit. I think it would be more logical if creatures hid behind trees or boulders, they would not affected by ranged attacks or spells which require LoS.

The Hero Experience Table

I thought that, toward the later levels, the gaining system became unbalanced. As another problem, after battle, even in WoW, the experience gained after battles were not shown. This was a definite negative. Also, it would be nice to see how much experience your hero needs to reach the next level without having to look at the table. This way, it would be easier to determine if it was a good time to go to the Tree of Knowledge or not.

Interactive Landscape

Inserting normal landscape features like a mountain, bog, warren, valley, and crag, and making them interactive. There are adventure map properties, combat map properties, and map editor properties. There are about 2 unique features for each of these parameters. The interactive landscapes will appear in combat, so if you are near a fort, then you will fight at a fort in combat.
http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?FID=5&TID=10496

Alignments and Spell Schools

Will the spells still be grouped with their alignments?
Will alignments still be present? In my opinion (I’ve stated this many times before) the close interrelation between castles in Heroes IV prevented any more from being added in the expansion. That and time constaints. If these two obstacles are overcome, it would be safe to say there are going to be new town/s in the expansion.

Battlefield Auxiliaries

The presence of war machines, first aid tents, ballistas, catapults, etc. eluded us in Heroes IV. While two returned as creatures many were missed. Even in Heroes I, there was a ‘hero tent’ so to speak, where the options became available. These sideline options aren’t available now, and the method of beating down a castle gate is now the new way. I would rather for the catapults to return as war machines, but still retain the element of knocking down the castle gate.

Improving Castle Looks

In Heroes IV, the symmetrical castles were a step back from the magnificent and varied castles of Heroes III and II. Though the Heroes I castles looked quite similar to each other, more was expected from Heroes IV. I would like to see the varied towns of Heroes II & III return, but also keep the terrain that the town was situated on. It looked a bit obscure having a Fortress town in the desert.
http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?FID=5&TID=5631

Advanced Hero Classes and Specialties

Specialties were absent from Heroes IV, and replaced by the beleaguered ‘Advanced Classes’ which were both criticised and praised. I for one would like to see the Hero Specialties return, just because they gave the hero a more real-life and unique feel, rather than being generic like in Heroes IV. Adding specialties would once again increase strategy from the beginning. Though I would also like Advanced Hero Classes to make the hero development process more varied. Also, I would like to call upon an idea by Darkspirit:
This theory deals with assigning specialties to entire classes. The stimulus behind this is that each race of creature/humans has their own characteristics, whether they be physical or mental. The idea tries to realise these characteristics and apply them as a bonus to a whole class.

Specialist Heroes

‘Specialist Heroes’ will be based upon one primary skill, and can only learn the secondary skills within that skill. For example, a scout would have scouting as the primary skill, then would be able to learn pathfinding, seamanship, and stealth. The specialist hero cannot learn skills outside of the scouting primary skill. This may lead people to believe that it would be too easy to fully develop a specialist hero. This is not so, only some specialist heroes may partake in combat, but all experience gained must be done so from adventure map objects. The specialist heroes involved in combat must accompany the hero, therefore never receive the experience themselves. This makes the process quite balanced so that the specialist heroes do not in fact gain levels too quickly.
http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?FID=5&TID=9704
(I think this the better of my two ideas)

Special Days

Credit to Djive:
Special Days are events that happen every few days, ranging to about once per month and are a replacement for ‘The week of the -------.’ Instead of just enhancing creature growth, special days will be much more varied. Special Days cause different, random events that affect all players, an example is ‘market day’ where all players receive a bonus of resources and can trade with each other for one day. Another is ‘King’s Decree’ where you must seek, pursue, and defeat a captive who has escaped in order to attain an assigned bonus (like expert scouting).

If more members would like to provide ideas and an outline, I strongly encourage you to do so.

------------

Additionally, I will be selecting the best ideas from this thread and sending them to Ubisoft, likewise with the poll. So, if you would like your name on the credits of Heroes of Might and Magic V, you have to post your ideas, first. (If they are not yours, just credit that member).
Thank you for reading once again.

1. What do you prefer the towns to look like on the Adventure Map?

g. Whatever fits best with the graphic engine used. I'd hope for medium sized castles which can be attacked from several directions. Take AoW2 towns, and improve on them (like the buildings which are too dull looking). Defaults size is overall unimportant due to the capability to zoom in and zoom out. If Ubisoft doesn't use the same town model for town and map then a lot of the gain of using 3D for both is lost, which would be unfortunate.

2. Would you prefer Heroes V to be…
e) All.

3. Which new features do you prefer? (Select two)
a. Leaders
h. Specialist Heroes (the way they are in heroes 3).

Also: what is the b. number referring to? If it's 4 towns then almost everyone would check that option. If it's 12 towns then checking it would be made by much fewer people.
e. Diverse towns, means what?
g. When it comes to battlefield auxiliaries, I'd prefer side-kicks instead of the war-machines. But they would probably not be included in the term battle-field auxiliaries. And they are not strictly limited to only the battlefield either.
d. and f. are the same thing unless someone takes the effort to read through the text above.

4. Do you think 3D will enhance Heroes V?
g. Graphically, yes. Game play, no.

5. Which graphical update is the most important to you?
a. Zooming in/out
b. Rotation
c. 3D modelling
d. More Action in Towns
e. Greater Frame Rate

a. and b.
d. is compared to which release?
Also if there is risks for the animations to makes the game unresponsive or laggy in MP, then there must be the possibility to turn them off.

6. Which of these map editor options would you prefer?

Keep the Map Editor in about the same feature level as is in Heroes 4, and I think the game will be fine. b. would probably be the most useful of the listed suggestions.

7. Which of the Series’ Music did you like the most?
b.

8. What would you like the creatures to be based upon?

g. The same as Heroes have traditionally been based on. Resuse 90% of the most popular creature, then create 10% new ones. Then redistribute the creatures between the towns. In other words, keep the creature base. It's fine.

9. What are your opinions on sieges?
a. probably lies closest.

10. How would you like the Town to operate?

e. No opinion. Whatever fits the designers of the game best.

11. Is it beneficial for towns to be linked to spell schools?
b. No.

12. What are your thoughts on opposite and neighbouring alignments?(Select more than one if necessary)
g. This is not necessarily good or bad. It all depends on the effects they have when you play the game and this is implementation specific.

13. Which adventure map additions would you like to see? (Select two)
d. Flexible Layers, with settable parameters to give certain types of creatures/factions bonuses and or penalties.
f. Fog of War as an option, and possible to start with unfogged map.

14. Did you like the Hero Level-up System in Heroes IV?

I'm not how to answer this one... And how the options relate to my opinions.

1. The Hero XP level up table was reused from earlier games. I think this table is bad, and want near linear increase at high levels (20+), and map makers to place fewer Trees of Knowledge on Epic Maps
2. Basing XP gained on difficulty is bad. Player feels cheap when gaining less Xp for same effort.
3. No XP gained pop-up at end of battle is bad.

15. How do you feel about creatures wandering by themselves?
d. would probably be the closest.

16. What capacity would you like Heroes to be in Combat?

Of the listed alternatives I'd say c.

17. Were you pleased with the amount of creatures in Heroes IV?
c. 10 to 20 more creatures wouldn't have hurt the game.

18. Should there still be creature levels?

c. (unless some game mechanism requires them. Stealth does so in Heroes 4, but it's more or less the only one I can think of.)

19. What is most important to you in the Heroes series: Towns, Adventure Map, Combat Map, Creatures, Heroes, Spells, or Skills?

I can't answer this one, since I don't see it as an option to take any of these away. There are many good ways of combining the above areas to make an enjoyable game.

20. How many towns do you want?

f. 8+

revived: was a while since it was on the first pages and perhaps more people want to post their opinions.

Hi there, interesting tread. I woud like to give you my opinions. Here goes...

1. What do you prefer the towns to look like on the Adventure Map?
I prefer the Heroes 3 Style, so it's a c here.

2. Would you prefer Heroes V to be…
Single player based. If we get too much multi, then the story and Ubisoft's involvement in the Campaign and SP maps will not be as good as I wish.

3. Which new features do you prefer? (Select two)
Heroes specialities, obvious, because it'sa plesure to level up your hero and to feel that you can actually choose the way he evolves (like in a RPG, for instance), and a diverse town build up. This seems logical to me, since H4 allmost lacked this feature.

4. Do you think 3D will enhance Heroes V?
Well, the grafix will look nicer, i presume, but hey, heroes was never apreciated for his grafix, but for his good gameplay. If introducing grafix will ruin this, then better without it.

5. Which graphical update is the most important to you?
Well, i allways thought that Heroes towns looked a little... dead, sort to speak. I thing they should enhance this feature a little bit, more animation, make it look alive! Some folk wandering arround the city would look cool, would give the impression that is being populated. And of course, when a hero will recruit all, then the little people there will dissapear. Interesting, no?

6. Which of these map editor options would you prefer?
For professional mapmakers, I think it would be a good Ideea for them to be able to control and change every little aspect of the map, so I vote d.

7. Which of the Series’ Music did you like the most?
I liked Heroes II's music the most. I sounded so childish, so nice... It was great. And quite relaxing, too.

8. What would you like the creatures to be based upon?
Pure mythology. Better yet, Tollkien mythology would suit heroes V nice...

9. What are your opinions on sieges in Heroes IV?
Sieges in H4 were a bit LAME. I miss the siege in H3, where being inside a castle really made a difference. So I say that Ubisoft should change that. Back to basics!!!

10. How would you like the Town to operate?
No need to discuss this aspect, it's a matter of detail. I think that City Hall should produce gold (like it allways did) and castle should provide defences. And bring back the Towers, please!

11. Is it beneficial for towns to be linked to their own spell schools(H4)?
It complicates things. Too much birocracy. Give power to the people, the same rights for all to have acces to spells!!!

12. What are your thoughts on opposite and neighbouring alignments?(Select more than one if necessary)
Good ideea. More strategy when picking what kind of units one has in his/hers army. I mean, it is odd to see an angel and a devil fighting together for the same cause, there should be restrictions here regarding combining units.

13. Which adventure map additions would you like to see? (Select two)
Town structures, mostly. It would easte the hero's job and create more objects on a map that must be controlled. They will also boost the army's numbers when needed. Another one, I would choose some interactive landscape, like in Wog.

14. Did you like the Hero Level-up System in Heroes IV?
Yes, I did. The only problem was that in a solo scenario you couldn't reach the higher scools of magic due to the vast need of experience. But I liked It, so I think it should be kept, maybe even diversify it a bit.

15. How do you feel about creatures wandering by themselves?
No way, Hose. That is a hero's job, to go and wander arround. Keep the caravans if you must, but take out those pesky Imps that were dancing arround my newly aquirred town!

16. What capacity would you like Heroes to be in Combat?
Like in heroes III. I know this subject has been discussed over and over again, but I say that the hero belongs in the back of an army, casting spells. And his stats should increase the army's stats, like in H3.

17. Were you pleased with the amount and variety of creatures in Heroes IV?
That was not a variety. Too few creatures to aquire. I think that 4 is not a sufficient level for the highest creature, let alone the number of units that you can recruit from a town type. So...

18. Should there still be creature levels?
Yes, why not? That was nice. It kinda grouped them by value

19. What is most important to you in the Heroes series...
First of all, gameplay. I like a game that keeps me in front of my computer for more than 10 hours. Then, the creatures. The more the merrier. Then the town types, the heroes... And so on.

20. How many towns do you want?
MANY. As many as they can. The only problem, as I said in another topic, is that it will take long for them to ballance the units, to create them, to design them... Anyway, more than in H4, that's sure...

Well, that's it. Hope it helps you guys

10. How would you like the Town to operate?

c.
They provide more morale penalties/bonuses realistically

13. Which adventure map additions would you like to see? (Select two)
a.
Mini Towns (Hamlets, Villages, etc.)
g.
Interactive map, so we could order the mines to carry its resources to the town you want. On this way it's interesting to give the chance to raid resources in the sieges, or take them all if you capture the town. So, if we have a determined skill we could see the wealth of each town.

14. Did you like the Hero Level-up System in Heroes IV?
a.
No

15. How do you feel about creatures wandering by themselves?
a.
Don’t like it at all

16. What capacity would you like Heroes to be in Combat?
f.
Heroes in combat, but inside a group of creatures. On this way we have more heroes (this is good, isn't it?) and it isn't difficult to add the option about duels, or giving the chances of different ways of attack, for example, capture the hero, kill them all! or defend the captain.

17. Were you pleased with the amount and variety of creatures in Heroes IV?
c.
No – Too little

18. Should there still be creature levels?
d.
Only for some creatues, oftenly for weaker units.

Combat map and castles sieges.

It should not be neglected, after all that's where most of the time is being actually spent (there are also thousands outside this forum that never played multi). For one thing, multi requires at least two people to have a large chunk of time available simultaneously, and that's in fact damn hard to achieve.

d. Hero Specialties

4. Do you think 3D will enhance Heroes V's gameplay?
a. No
It might not ruin the gameplay, but it will totally hurt the look and feel of the game. Begone, ugly Warcraft 3 style blocky 3D graphics! Come back, Heroes II style medievial look vibrant with character that can never be reproduced in 3D.

Part 1: Idea Proposals

-Artifacts: I’d like to see artifacts (worn by the hero) that would give a single type of creature (if it’s in the army) some big advantages. E.g. Vampire Cowl gives +50% damage, +5 attack and defense and +10 health to Vampires (if any, otherwise it’s useless).
Also artifacts that are buried and can be found by visiting a single obelisk or two would be a good innovation.
Artifacts connected with some alignment (Sword of Hellfire is connected with Inferno) should give some minor bonus to creatures/hero from that alignment (if not from the corresponding alignment, it gives just the regular advantage.

-Adventure Map: I think the structures in Heroes4 were too Barbie-world. I think they should be smaller, also. Unlike the natural objects (mountain, woods not trees) which should be bigger.
Day/night changes: It would be good if there’s an option at the beginning of the game to choose whether to play by day or night. Day/night changes should occur while the enemy is on the move. E.g. you choose to play by night. You end your turn. The computer moves. If he moves by night, it’s still night, otherwise the sun rises and sets just before your turn comes.

-Town Alignments: I’ve got a proposal about the town alignments in the following thread http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?FID=5&TID=11014&pagenumber=1. The towns are tightly connected with each other, but that doesn’t lock the game for adding more towns (read the debate with Hydra. Speaking of which, it hasn’t ended yet. Hydra, I’m expecting a reply from you.) In short: 8-12 towns arranged in Good/Evil, Order/Chaos and Neutral alignment, which are intersecting with each other.
Magic schools are not tightly connected with towns, but they are not available to everyone also. A quarter of each of the 8 magic schools is shared with other magic schools (see the thread, again).
I also proposed a new system of morale, where an individual creature morale rather than a group army morale will be calculated.

Part 2: Poll

1. g. Other. Please specify :Well, a “biggish” town with a castle and few buildings (like the Necropolis town pic I saw somewhere, but don’t know what style it is)

2. e. All (but most of all Single Player)

3. d. Hero Specialties
e. Diverse Towns - More options in town build-up

4. a. No

5. a. Zooming in/out
b. Rotation

6. b. Random Map Generator – In first expansion

7. c. Heroes III

8. Mostly mythology, some creatures from M & M

9. a. They need to be totally altered

10. a. Castle = Defence, City Hall = Gold

11. e. Other: It is beneficial, but allow some freedom also.

12. c. They provide more morale penalties/bonuses realistically
d. They make the game more unique
e. They enhance strategy between towns

13. c. Interactive Landscape

14. c. Unsure
e. No, basing progression on difficulty is unfavourable

15. a. Don’t like it at all

16. e. Have hero duels (but if the hero fights without the army. The point is, I’d like to see my hero, but not in battles, where he is vulnerable)

17. c. No – Too little
d. No – not enough variety
e. No – Too unoriginal

18. a. Yes

19. a. Towns
d. Creatures

20. i. 9 – 11 (maybe 12, also)

My Responses

Special thanks to Svarog who proposed his ideas for Part 1 of this thread, no-one else has done this so far, but thankyou very much for the poll responses.

1. What do you prefer the towns to look like on the Adventure Map?
e. NWC Heroes V style, huge, varied, some structures

I think this town style epitomised the nature and art of the Heroes Series. It would have been interesting to see the other towns NWC had created, as they would have given a furhter outlook into the style of Heroes V.

2. Would you prefer Heroes V to be…
c. Single Player Based

I believe this is the most played section of the game. The storyline revolves around the single player, and I doubt anyone would play online straight away before having tried single player.

3. Which new features do you prefer? (Select two)
d. Hero Specialties
f. Specialist Heroes

While the other suggestions are definitely needed (I would like almost all of them) these two are the most prominent in my mind. Hero Specialties were sorely missed, and I would like a handful of new ideas to be implemented.

4. Do you think 3D will enhance Heroes V's gameplay?
c. It isn’t necessary, but it could be better for the game

It is true that 3D doesn't improve gameplay. It only improves graphics, seeing as there are no previous elements of the series that relied on 3D rendering to function. While the game could look better, I doubt any bearing it would have on the gameplay of Heroes V.

5. Which graphical update is the most important to you?
b. Rotation

It would be an interesting feature to have, because all items on the adventure map could be seen clearly. Also, the objects blocking the view of an item would not have to become semi-transparent as in Heroes IV.

6. Which of these map editor options would you prefer?
d. Able to edit every aspect of the map editor (What heroes appear in Taverns, etc.)

Though the other features are certainly wanted, I would prefer this option, because I am more of a 'customisational' person, and would rather make my own specific maps than have the game create it for me.

7. Which of the Series’ Music did you like the most?
b. Heroes II

Simplistic, Ambient, Melancholic. (Not melancholy)

8. What would you like the creatures to be based upon?
g. Other, please specify.

Mostly mythology, some unique creation, some creatures from Might and Magic.

9. What are your opinions on sieges?
d. There need to be more options

While my opinion is somewhat of a composite of a. and d. I think the latter suits my opinion the best. It doesn't need to be completely altered, but the sieges need to be more involved.

10. How would you like the Town to operate?
c. Castle = Defence, and Gold, City Hall = Nonexistent, Other Structures = Gold

This is similar to the way it was in Heroes II. I don't believe it one structure providing all the income, and this is the more original way of town build-up. The Castle's importance is rightfully augmented this way, while the gold income wouldn't be huge, maybe 500, it would still be sought after.

11. Is it beneficial for towns to be linked to spell schools(H4)?
c. Undecided

I am really unsure on this. While it is better for the town's gameplay and uniqueness, it is too restricting and requires an unchanged system. This means no towns can be added.

12. What are your thoughts on opposite and neighbouring alignments?(Select more than one if necessary)
c. They provide more morale penalties/bonuses realistically
e. They enhance strategy between towns

Both of these are true, in my opinion. It was a good change for Heroes IV. Although, a. is also true.

13. Which adventure map additions would you like to see? (Select two)
a. Mini Towns (Hamlets, Villages, etc.)
c. Interactive Landscape

These are my two favourite ideas for the Adventure map, and I believe both can be extremely useful. There need to be mini-towns, because the towns are the only place where kingdom building is possible. Also, the landscape is too static, and Interactive Landscape is IMO the best way to alleviate this.

14. Did you like the Hero Level-up System in Heroes IV?
d. No, it took too long to reach higher levels

This is verified if you look at the Hero Experience chart. It can be found here. If you notice, the experience require starts to increase immensly around level 17. This is not healthy, in my opinion, and stopped players from reaching levels like 40 instead of 30.

15. How do you feel about creatures wandering by themselves?
d. It lessens the demand for heroes

This is a bad thing, for me, I think heroes should be the only units to possess this capability. They need to be more prominent on the adventure map, like in Heroes I-III.

16. What capacity would you like Heroes to be in Combat?
e. Have hero duels

This would be the easiest way to involve heroes in combat without having to balance the hero levels with the number of creatures a town wold have on any given day.

17. Were you pleased with the amount and variety of creatures in Heroes IV?
c. No – Too little

For me, it just came down to the lack of creatures. While they were very unique (no upgrades) there were just too few of them. I am aiming for around 120 creatures for Heroes V.

18. Should there still be creature levels?
a. Yes

It makes the game more structured, and allows for strategic decisions, like choosing between creatures, and also for diversifying creature upgrade systems, which may not be feasible without levels. Also, having levels ensures a fairly equal playing field for towns, and additionally, gives a clear indication of the creatures' strength.

19. What is most important to you in the Heroes series: Towns, Adventure Map, Combat Map, Creatures, Heroes, Spells, or Skills?
a. Towns
b. Adventure Map
c. Combat Map
e. Heroes

I think these four are the most important in the series, due to the fact that they are probably the more integral part of the series.

20. How many towns do you want?
f. 8+

Anything below 8 is too little, but the highest amount of towns I'd like to see is 12, I think 10 would be perfect for me.

Finally, some replies concerning some problems or questions posters have had:

Djive

'5. Which graphical update is the most important to you?...
d. More action in towns..'
"d. is compared to which release?"

To every release. Seeing as all of them had pretty much the same amount of movement in the towns, the question is broad enough to encompass every series. While there are slight fluctuations, people would know if they would like more or not.

CB_Duke

"->> what about H3 level-up system?"

I thought it would be best to stick with the newest system, and that is Heroes IV. The reason being, it is the latest work done by NWC.

"PS: show us style how we have to vote. my method may be not perfect."

The first time you posted your reply, it was not perfect, but I see that you have corrected it, and now it is perfect.

Doomnezeu

You may actually want to write the letter you chose. Thanks for justifying your decision, though.

I can tell by your responses that you loved Heroes IV!

"(read the debate with Hydra. Speaking of which, it hasn’t ended yet. Hydra, I’m expecting a reply from you.)"

Yes, I was meaning to reply, but I have started school again, so I have been quite busy. I will try to reply as soon as possible. (I'm sorry that no-one else has discussed your (actual) town system). Though I have seen the increased use of the word 'Revolutionary' since your thread was started.

"1. g. Other. Please specify :Well, a “biggish” town with a castle and few buildings (like the Necropolis town pic I saw somewhere, but don’t know what style it is)"

That would be NWC Heroes V style, so I will take your answer as 'e.' not 'g.'

Once again, thanks to everyone that replied on this thread, I will be creating a summary of the results shortly. Look for that on the bottom of my initial post.

At first, cheers to ThE_HyDrA for making another good thread

And second: I don’t like to participate in polls. I could only explain one or another opinion about the questions made by ThE_HyDrA. So I won’t write the answer to choose, only opinion about questions.

NOTE: I read the first edition (before HyDrA edited it) of this post, so some of my explanations are a bit illogical. I corrected some of them, so maybe it will be good. Still, I won’t write a’s b’s c’s d’s or e’s, like I said before. Only explanations.

1.

I would like to have an absolute mix. Mid-sized towns with only castle, few buildings and a wall shown. The walls and castle should heighten every time fort is upgraded. Same thing with buildings. They should appear as little houses. When upgraded, they should look X2 sized. For ex.: dwelling has an upgrade: little cube-formed house with one floor. When upgraded it should be medium cube-formed house with two floors.

2.

Eveything should be in one. You could play on LAN or on Net with players all over the world. Single player based things have to appear in H5, because heroes would be a complete noncence without any campaigns (only scenarios, no!!!)

3.

If I could I would choose almost all of them, because those things are needed very much and I think they should be involved into H5. I marked G and E, because there is many discussions about involving towns into game. I would like that all the towns should be unique. For Example: one town should have 7 levels of creatures and 3 levels of magic while the other one should have 6 levs of creatures and 5 levs of magic. I think H4 idea of 6 towns is too few. I think more towns - from 7-10 - should do the work. More unique towns, more strategies to use.

4.

Yes, 3D graphics should be involved in H5. It would very interesting and new thing in homm series. It would be like a total revolution, if the graphics are going to be upgraded from 2D to 3D. In some parts I think I would prefer 2D. Many people liked battlefield in 2d graphics. I liked that too, but in H3 creatures were too large. They should be made smaller alike the battlefield. Then I think 2D should be the best.

5.

For this one, I would choose all of them too, because they're one of the most needed things here. I chose D, because I liked H3 in-town graphics. I liked how the water moved, lighthouses lit the ground. I think that is very good thing to catch with eye. It would be nice, if we could see a sunset or a sunrise somewhere far from the castle when in the town menu.

6.

This option affects all of the listed above. Random generators are really needed in H5 and many of us surely need it. Scripting is also needed. If you wanna have new options, you must have it. Enhanced Map Editor should do the whole job: what heroes appear in taverns, percentage edit (interactive landscape), etc.

7.

I want smth new. I liked the opera music from H2-H3 best. I hated that silly H4 music, with words and silly music. I want to have smth new. More elven songs, songs from LotR could do the job too, some songs from operas, ballets or even some folklore can be involved. One thing mustn't appear: all those rap, pop and other songs aligned with our times.

8.

Everything in one. I would like to have many mythology creatures, many unique creatures, many newly created ones. Creatures should be based on everything: folklore, myths, history. It is one of the main requirements that I have decided that I want.

9.

Everything has to be changed. If new 3D graphics are involved, then UbiSoft should make sieges more unique, well-organized and more interesting. Every time, you have to feel the need to play this game. Also, I think in battlefield new options should appear: after viewing DK2: in dungeon keeper 2 you could obsess a creature (first person). I think if you want you could obsess a creature (third person), but still see the whole battlefield: how much you can move,  what creatures are in front, aside, what obstacles there are. I can't explain it in words, because my mind's kind o' messed up, but I hope you understand my will.

10.

City hall should give gold and some other resources (act as a resource silo, which has been taked n from H4). Defence towers should be like arrow towers in battlefield. Castle should provide stronger walls, gates, moats and a deadfall (like in h3). Also, there should be that thing called melee tower. You could put one creature in it. Other units that attack this unit, would do less 50% damage  to the unit that's in it. While that unit would do 50% more damage(only melee creatures, not ranged) could be put there).

11.

Yes, of course. Every town should have unique magic, unique quantity of levels, unique buildings that should give better effect to spells while the hero is in town, etc.

12.

This option should only appear in campaigns. I think that towns should be aligned to each other. For ex.: some should be evil, some should be good.  I don't have much to say here,

13.

I think these are the main. There were many discussions about interactive landscape. One of the main ones were created by the same creator (HyDrA ) where he explained about the effects of the landscape. Particularly, ideas were awesome. Bog, mirages and forests, everything in one. I think this was one of the best ideas that could appear in the approaching H5 version. Second thing I chose were buildings that particularly originated in towns, but placed on the map. This thing should be brought back from good ol’ WoG to H5. I think that buildings on the map should have the maximum effect.

14.

I’m unsure about this, because I haven’t been playing H4 for so long. I hated it because there was so hard to achieve higher levels when you had two heroes in the army, but I loved it because it was so easy to achieve high levels when I have only one hero. I’m pretty sure I would like UbiSoft could change it with new ones.

15.

I didn’t like it at all. It was nonsense to see those creatures wandering around, doing nothing. I think only that stationary option could be left in H5. Wandering creatures should be banished. But… UbiSoft could return that WoG freelancer option: you could hire a stack of freelancers which would walk over the lands for a week and kill all the things they see. They couldn’t collect XP or artifacts or be placed to fight with the hero. They should be on the map, walk over the lands and kill every unit they see.

16.

Like H4. I liked it pretty much, because there was more and more strategies to use, more and more difficulties to kill enemy. I think more options have to be more and more options, only made by UbiSoft.

17.

Nothing to explain here...

18.

Yes. There should be new level system, though. My suggestion: 2 creatures per lev to choose from. Every creature should have 0-3 upgrades to choose from. For ex.: pikeman ----> lancer … or … pikeman ----> halberdier

19.

Nothing to say here, just that EVERYTHING IS IMPORTANT IN HOMM.

20.

Not sure. I would be satisfied with 8 towns with 6 six levels, but the more, the merrier.

Part 1
------------

i wouldn't claim many of those ideas to be mine.

medieval art style

medieval for sure, the question is the level of freakyness imho, not the style.
btw medieval style can look cartoony in it's own way.

level of woundedness

damage distribution between deaths and wounds. part of damage kills the first creatures in a stack and part of damage increases the average level of wounds in a stack (decreases max health of all creatures in a stack).

Heroes in Combat

medieval code of honor instead of generals on the battlefield (battlefield heroes and generals should imho be different, if we need the battlefield heroes at all).

experience effects and morale

the main effect of a general's experience level should be morale imho. and morale should have some sort of effect on how much damage the creatures do, in addition to the freeze effect.

reatliation

calculate damage as if there were many hits and retaliations. this is a compromise between simultaneous retaliation and the traditional one attack and one retaliation.

Diversify towns

upper and lower town idea by nasty is a nice idea for the atmosphere imho. also, i like the idea that the "lower town" creatures should live in the terrain around the upper town, e.g. dwarves might live in the nearby mines.

highest level divine creatures not commanded by general

imho devils, angels, titans, etc. should not act nor be recruited like the normal troops in an army. they might assist a battle if called upon, be controlled by ai, and be immortal. the battle is lost when mortal troops are dead.

creatures could be upgraded based on exp (damage) accumulated by a stack

services in war should give a higher rank of nobility, which imho might correspond to creature level or creature upgrade.

skills being offered

probability based on how the general behaves. maybe there could be a creature specialty skill.

terrain

passable forest, lower passable hills, higher impassable mountains, resulting in movement penalties, scouting range effects and line of sight effetcs. special terrain effects like some of those listed in http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?FID=5&TID=10496 as necessary (every terrain doesn't need a special effect imho).

alignments

let every alignment fight for their own truth, like in the famous mutare campaign in homm3. no need to make good and evil absolute imho.

siege

bring back catapults, let some creatures climb the walls -- make it a struggle to block creatures from getting into the castle. surrender or forced fight in the open field because of starvation if the enemy has blocked the gate for long enough.

combat options

get rid of the wait function, at least the way it is atm. add prudent attack function maybe.

imho the retal system in general should be discussed again, maybe there should be no retal, maybe retal should use up your turn. it's a can of worms sort of thing imho.

Part 2
------------

As aforementioned, Part 2 of the thread is a short poll about Heroes V. These questions are derived from miscellaneous questions in the ‘Questions to Ubisoft’ thread. I would like to modify these questions slightly and draw a response from the community. The poll will also be closely moderated. The responses will be summarised at the bottom of this post.

11. Is it beneficial for towns to be linked to their own spell schools(H4)?
c. Undecided

12. What are your thoughts on opposite and neighbouring alignments?(Select more than one if necessary)
g. Other, please elucidate -- they are nice and reasonable, but why do we have to put them into a pentagram?

13. Which adventure map additions would you like to see? (Select two)
g. Other, please specify -- upgradable tax-paying villages that you usually leave unupgraded.

14. Did you like the Hero Level-up System in Heroes IV?
d. No, it took too long to reach higher levels

15. How do you feel about creatures wandering by themselves?
f. Undecided

16. What capacity would you like Heroes to be in Combat?
d. Like Heroes I-III, but not influence the creatures’ attack/defence ratings

17. Were you pleased with the amount and variety of creatures in Heroes IV?
f. No – Other, please expand -- felt too minimalistic. like funky music when you expected a symphony.

18. Should there still be creature levels?
c. Ones that aren’t noticeable (Heroes II)
(huh, what's that about? have i missed some discussion?)(homm2 creature levels were unnoticeable?)

19. What is most important to you in the Heroes series...
d. Creatures

20. How many towns do you want?
h. 7 – 9

Will towns being placed atop hills or mountains affect the radius that the town provides?
I hope that town placement will play a major role in h5 defence and siege tactics. the terrain and weather should play their roles.

Heroes in Combat – Yes or No?
I would keep the hero out of battle, but an interesting option would be to throw him into battle if desired (he could ride out in front of his troops like Caesar, bringing a +5 to morale! )

Art Style – Fantasy or Medieval?
My option would be definitely medieval. The fantasy of the pictures released by Ubisoft is very uninspired in my opinion, especially the angel. I don't want to play a japanese cartoon.

Diversify towns
Diversification is essential if heroes is to return to the tradition established in the series. And there are lots of ideas in the community to make this happen. The two sections of the town can fit very well.

Line of Sight
Trees, hillocks, water streams and other features should become functional. Archery tactics can benefit hugely from those innovations.

The Hero Experience Table
The gaining of experience was indeed frustrating in h4, but the rest was ok, i think. The design was perhaps the most inspired art in the whole game.

Interactive Landscape
Completely agree. Sea shores and river banks is what I wish to see for a long time.

Alignments and Spell Schools
I think that grouping spells was interesting in h4 and added a tough of reality and differentiation needed. If they will take the time to design enough castles from the beginning, there will be no need for more of them in the later versions.

Battlefield Auxiliaries
The auxilliares especially in a siege could bring a lot of combat fun and god knows that there are plenty of elements that could be inserted here. Knocking down walls, escaladating the walls, ramming the gates, pouring down hot stuff from the ramparts, and many more.

Improving Castle Looks
I agree again, and this is a must for h5. I would risk to say that they should differentiate the races so much that the towns might not even have in common anything.

Advanced Hero Classes and Specialties
I think that specialities can be accompanied very nicely by advanced classes.

Specialist Heroes
I support this idea completely.

Special Days
Special days and other events are welcomed and I think Djive developed some time ago a whole topic concerning that.

------------
Part 2
------------

1. What do you prefer the towns to look like on the Adventure Map?
e. NWC Heroes V style, huge, varied, some structures

b. Weather Effects
f. Specialist Heroes
It is not fair to allow only 2 choices

5. Which graphical update is the most important to you?
d. More Action in Towns

6. Which of these map editor options would you prefer?
c. Greater Scripting options

7. Which of the Series’ Music did you like the most?
c. Heroes III

a. Yes

Heroes II and I were bloated... I see no need to see the dwellings. If necessary, it might look nice to see a few thatched dwellings, and I can see how a hilltop town can be made to look like Disney's Magical Kingdom, but just generally- simplicity is best.

HIV was ugly in so many ways that it sickens me to think about it.

NWC Heroes V art just looks altogether too large- what are we going to have to do- purchase 2560x1280 compatible screens?

2. Would you prefer Heroes V to be…
c. Single Player Based

I don't play multiplayer, but if it were included, hotseat would be a must.

Quote:

3. Which new features do you prefer? (Select two)
d. Hero Specialties
e. Diverse Towns - More options in town build-up

Hero Specialities, from H3 is a must.
Diverse Towns is also a must.

I have no idea what is meant by Leaders or Auziliaries or sidekicks or Diplomacy or Specialist Heroes and will look into them more.

Weather might be nice, as in effecting morale and bonuses, but I would rather have the other tow.

4. Do you think 3D will enhance Heroes V's gameplay?
a. No

All 3D does is ruin games and gameplay. The majority of 3D games look ugly- look at Neverwinter Nights- Ugly and clunky. 3D is a disgusting holdover from Consoles and is only useful for action games- it has no place in RTS or TBS.

Quote:

5. Which graphical update is the most important to you?
a. Zooming in/out

I don't think any of the options are that important. I would rather have a good game with a lot of unique units (like H3)... not like that piece of trash- H4.

Quote:

6. Which of these map editor options would you prefer?
d. Able to edit every aspect of the map editor (What heroes appear in Taverns, etc.)

The more basic ability-editing, the better. I make a point to buy games that let me mod them without having to learn C++ programming (**** you Neverwinter Nights!) or another new language.

Quote:

7. Which of the Series’ Music did you like the most?
f. I want something new

But H3's nice was good. Epic music that is more varied would be good. Having a few different types of music for each battle would be nice so that it doesn't get repetitive.

As it is, I play with the sound off because I can't stand the repetitiveness.

8. What would you like the creatures to be based upon?
g. Same as previous versions
h. Other, please specify

of the two, I'll probably answer H.

Basically, I want the creatures to be... well, creatures. I don't want 'constructed units' like that trashy "Venom Spawn" from H4 and I think that units such as "Evil Sorceress" both look and sound idiotic. Those are more suited for hero occupations.

H3's monsters are a good model... but I think that adding creatures like Boars that are well... 'common' takes away from the game. The more fantastic and rooted in FANTASY the creatures are, the better.

And frankly, I wouldn't mind if the game had even more dragons (1 dragon per town mayhaps? )

Quote:

9. What are your opinions on sieges in Heroes IV?
g. Other, please specify.

None. H3 was good enough.

10. How would you like the Town to operate?

as classic H3

to quote the venerable djive: This is not necessarily good or bad. It all depends on the effects they have when you play the game and this is implementation specific.

13. Which adventure map additions would you like to see? (Select two)
e. Town structures on the adventure map, eg. Fully-built Mage Guilds
f. Fog of War - Optional

Quote:

14. Did you like the Hero Level-up System in Heroes IV?
c. Unsure

Quote:

15. How do you feel about creatures wandering by themselves?
b. I love it

It has its good qualities and its bad. If it could be turned on/off, it would be great.

Quote:

16. What capacity would you like Heroes to be in Combat?
c. Like Heroes I-III
e. Have hero duels

Just to please the HIV crowd who like heroes on the battlefield, I suggest that heroes could, when going into battle, offer to duel the opposing hero... without any creatures... meanwhile, most battles would be fought in the traditional H3 way that makes more sense... becuase honestly, if 50 demons were attacking one person- they would usually die- and it's stupid and wasteful to have a weak character running around the board.

Quote:

17. Were you pleased with the amount and variety of creatures in Heroes IV?
c. No – Too little

Only H3 levels will do anything else is a downgrade.

Quote:

18. Should there still be creature levels?
a. Yes

Quote:

19. What is most important to you in the Heroes series...
d. Creatures

I like both creatures and heroes.

Quote:

20. How many towns do you want?
h. 7 – 9

I'm not certain that they can make a quality game with too much more or less than 7-9 towns...
