How very very strange. I identify as a libertarian and conservative.. in fact when I hear liberal I think head-in-the-clouds or naive. This chart thinks I'm one of them?

You know what, it's probably because I don't have religious views, I actually care about the environment and I hate mega corporations. If I subtracted that out whats left would put me in the bottom right, I'm sure.

The other said a similar thing though

Maybe it's because I live in California and the liberals here are a such bunch of nut-case communists that I just can't identify.

Oh yeah, originally liberalism meant freedom of speech and voting rights for all and capitalism and all kinds of good stuff. Basically all the great political movements from the late 18th and 19th centuries. But of course once all the good things were put into the government, liberals had to find more and more things to put into the government.

Also there is a HUGE, just HUGE misunderstanding of Marxism. You have to understand the context that Marxism was developed in. At the time there was the Bourgeoisie who owned everything and made money because they had assests. You know the whole "it takes money to make money" thing? Basically in Russia at the time there were two classes of people:
The Bourgeoisie who were snowholes who did absolutely nothing to contribute to society but lived off of basically interest of their inherited assets (one of Karl Marx's big ideas was "unearned income" - money that you get from being rich like interest and rent, instead of from contributing to society)
And the Proletariat which was the working class who worked hard and had nothing.
So Karl Marx was like "snow this", instead of money being given to the rich while the poor get nothing, everyone should work and everyone should get a share of the wealth. The government should own all of the assets that give unearned income. In his context this was a great idea. If you read his works the concept of welfare just doesn't occur to him, that was so far removed from the economic system he lived in. He wasn't trying to build a welfare state, he was trying to shut one down in a sense. If anything I think Karl Marx might consider welfare unearned income and be against modern communism.

You are wrong in some areas. Marx (and Engels) saw Western Europe as the base for the socialistic and then communistic society because they require developed industrial base and advanced level of class awareness (and thus antagonism - the bourgeoisie exploits and oppresses the proletariat, thus the proletariat rises and destroys the bourgeoisie which has become reactionary and obstructive to the social progress). At that time Russia was still semi-feudal, with very underdeveloped industry (actually there was no serious industry to speak of before Stalin's forced industrialization), the vast majority of the population still working as farmers who differ little from the recently abolished serfs. Before Marx's death there were maybe around a million people in Russia who could be called proletariat which was less than 1% of the entire population - compared to the proletarii in the industrialized European countries that's nothing. Russia was never meant to be the birthplace of Marxist-like societies, that role was for Britain, France, in some sense maybe Germany (but Marx himself always regarded it as more reactionary than the other European powers, not to mention that it was not united before Bismark). Fun fact is that both Marx and Engels regarded the US as one of the best examples of progressive society.

Also, the government and the state were not supposed to be anything more than tools which the proletariat would use in the early pre-communistic state of the new society to re-acquire what the capitalists have taken from them and redistribute it (more) evenly. At later stages the state was supposed to "die out" because it was expected to become obsolete as a social construct necessary to regulate the relations between the citizens - but this is getting into the wishful thinking areas of Marxism where no real scientific or philosophical justification is provided for such expectations.

Finally, as for the welfare, Marx considered it (in the very underdeveloped and mostly theoretical form that it had in XIX century) as a product of the "weak socialism", ultimately something that holds the revolution down by giving scraps to the masses to keep them content while in fact they are still exploited and oppressed. The modern welfare state in fact owes much to the Marxist ideologies and the fear of spreading the revolutionary movements across Europe, even though Marx himself might have not approved it indeed.

You're clearly more familiar with him than I. I never finished reading Marx's book and it was a long time ago. I had forgotten that the farmers weren't part of the proletariat, and I don't think I ever knew the state dying out part.

Been a little while since this was posted, and while not 900% accurate and beyond all reproach (I remember there being a 300 question version that was more in-depth) I feel like it's a bit more light-hearted than a lot of the topics we've had in here lately. Or at least, a bit more silly.

My results, to no one's surprise, are:

Solidly economically left-wing and socially libertarian. But not extremely so. Libertarian Socialist, rather than an Anarcho Communist. Unlike what some people would claim.

Didn’t we have a thread for this?

Pretty boringly in the centre economically although a bit more FREEEDOM than authority. A high variance depending on topic but generally libertarian.
