HoMM2 strategy anyone?

This forum is for strategy and trivia. But not only Heroes3! This thread is for HoMM2 only, so don't post your tactics for H3. H1 is allowed, but Heroes of Might and Magic2 is supposed to be in here. Please post your ideas here.

Play the Warlock.

Recruit Ghosts if you can.

Never be the sorceress.

What?

Sorceress is cool!  Also very strong in the early game. You can take many castles fast. Of course later on I'd be warlock or wizard or necro. Also, Stronghold is very good, especially getting lots of cyclops fast then with those regnerating trolls in huge stacks... wipe out your enemies.

Genies and Ghosts, unfair strong units. Ghosts insane, start with 1 and soon you have 10,000. Genie's much better, but still not really fair. I used to like to take big group of paladins and the rest slots genies, genies go and take out half of enemy units, paladins finish off. The rest of my units stay and guard castles or take some other towns. I sort of liked the boars for old wizards castle also- I remember some very close games came down to a few boars leftover.  Titans were stronger in H2, along with all ranged really. Also Bone Dragons were pretty decent top level unit back then. Not the best, but still an obstacle.

If you are playing people via hotseat or the net, if you get sorceress you loose period.

Our heroes group always picks random castles to start and i do not believe the sorceress ever won, no matter which player had her.

Sometimes we would use her as the handicap if someone was having a winning streak.

Never use the sorceress, best all time HOMM2 strategy tip.

I disagree

I don't think sorceress is that bad. If you stick with her ,sure you will probably have trouble, but H2 towns are much easier to build up then in H3, any game of H2 I've ever had online I usually get 3-4 towns by week 2 and two of them totally built up. They key is use the initial fast speed and then switch to a dif town type. Of course it's easier to start with a good town I suppose to get alot of same units types, but the only town that expands as fast as sorceress early on is maybe barbarian in my opinion. Halfings die too quickly for wizards, warlock can't get enough gargolyes week 1 to really expands fast... necro might expand fast if it wanted, but better to go slow and get maximum skeletons.

Later on, if you have phoenix they are ok for inatiative, but really red tower is too expensive. I'd hardly ever build it.

I haven't played H2 online as much as I played H3, but of my maybe 20 games I was probably sorceress at least 4 or 5 of them. I only lost 2 games of the twenty so I know I won with sorceress at least a couple times. I did play the map Unicorns! alot though so perhaps with everyone starting as sorceress... anyway, I don't think sorceress has the staying power in the long game either, but really if you use it fast then abandon it- you can do very well. I think it's worse weakness are the druids and the phoenix. I admit I enjoy barbarian side the most in H2 however. I just don't like seeing sorceress get a terrible rep. I've heard other people say how bad it is too, but everything depends on strategy. Just like Fortress initially had a bad rep in H3, when people played it alot more they found some things to like. Of course H2 never had the mass multiplayer of H3, but some very constant leagues were around, and I think even still are. Last time I played H2 online was in 1998 though.

I don't think you won with the sorceress but inspite of the sorceress.  Try playing with town type purity and see if you can beat equal talent with sorceress.  The only way to win with sorceress is to change town affiliation to almost any other town.

Hay!

Didn't think I'd get six replies in one day! But there are a couple things wrong. You can't recruit ghosts. There is no stronghold. And now, some of my strategy:

On small maps, the barbarian and some times necromancer rule. Choose wizard and warlock only on huge maps. They're the most expensive and need time to build up. Phoenixes aren't that bad. They may be low on HP, but they're also cheap and ultra fast. If you want to make a hit and run, they'll be great! Suppose you have 30 spell power and chain lightening. Attack the enemy, cast the spell and - if the spell didn't killed enough opponent creatures - run or surrender! The choice is yours...

A few more things to remember

The computer will target your shooters without fail. Use this against it.

No matter how much you may like ALL the units in your town, you have to leave something behind. (Assuming all units are built) I suggest leaving behind, or not bothering to recruit unless suddenly needed in defense:
Castle: Peasants
Necro: Zombies
Barbarian: Goblins
Sorceress: Dwarves
Wizard: Golems
Warlock: Hydras (unless you have haste or teleport)

In general, these units just slow you down but make good defenders. Peasants are pretty much useless in your own army. Hydras, though powerful, are slow, and have the added advantage that a big stack in your castle usually scares the computer away.

Learn to recognize the artifacts. If you have a chance at the Battle Garb of Anduran, go for it!! Avoid the useless or cursed artifacts.

Watch your luck and morale carefully. You can get negative luck in HOMM2, and it can be a bad thing at the wrong time.

Here's more of my advice:

When you play necromancer (my favourite kind of hero), try getting expert necromancy real quick. If you have a lot of peasants in your army, attack ghosts (unless you won't be able to kill all the gosts plus those made of your peasants). Send the peasants for quick death, then destroy the ghosts before they kill anything else. Attacking weak wandering creatyres is also good, but I'll bet everyone here knows that .

Hmm, h2, long time no play.
Though the memory is still sweet.

You CAN recruit ghost in some maps in a structure called...
Damn, just forget the name....
But ghost is way TOO unbalancing and will totally ruin the game.

Sorceress town is not bad. Yep, it is not a town you can hold to the end. (Well, I never play ˇ§pure townˇ¨. I make use of good units from different towns)
But it is a good ˇ§starting townˇ¨.
Sorceress heroes are quite......hmm....good looking but not very useful.

But the line-up is quite cool. With two very fast shooters you can get quite early, the early game wonˇ¦t be too difficult. You can't wait in h2 anyway and your shooters would got attacked soon. So attack with your shooters before being attacked is a good idea.

But my all time favourite in h2 goes to barbarian town. Excellent starting heroes due to the given path-finding speciality and highest chance to get logistic + terrain advantage = quick exploration. Try to get troll bridge in week 1. Upgrade to war trolls early week 2 and go out for hunting....And in h2, barbarian can also build lv 5 mage guides !

In large/extra large maps with towns well separated with each others, I would go for necro./wizard/warlock coz skele horde/titan/dragon are deadly in late game. In full line-up, these towns would rule.

Yeah

Barbarians my fav town also- mostly cause of wolves, war trolls, and cyclops. The level 5 mage guild was normal for H2 though every town had it.

Ghosts can be recruited from barrows I think? Been awhile since I played it, but there were some maps I recall that you could win in less than 1 week if it was capture a certain town scenario. You could go thru portal stones, get ghosts, then chain to the hero you had going towards victory town since day 1... highest possible score every time. Ghosts and Genies both unbalancing in it, but ghosts only came with the expansion, the price of loyalty. Much better expansion to me than the ones for H3.

I wouldn't leave Golems behind, I find them to be one of Wizards most powerful units. Especially the iron golems, I would get them as fast as I could and with those, boars and archmagi would make fast expansion army. Warlock had the most trouble expanding cause until he could get minataurs it was hard. Those centaurs really weak, but then there were alot of centaur caves and halfing holes on every map.

Knight and warlock be the best
play with none of the rest

recruit ghost and other ones
use them as normal ones

use both strenght and brains
and combine them to be the best.

So as not to re-invent the wheel...

Try checking through the HOMM 2 strategies and tips at the Astral Wizard site (www.astralwizard.com). Since you inspired me to dust off the old Heroes 2 cd, I've been back a time or two to refresh my memory.

Always happy to help out a fellow dwarf.

Been playing H2 alot lately

Some of the things I remembered where about inatiative, since there is no wait button in H2, it's much harder to fight a battle with 0 losses, but if you order your troops from top to bottom correctly and also use haste or slow with good proficiency you can still do it. Best is to kill opponent flying units then fast units first if you can, then either kill most powerful stack or the stacks in order of speed. Enemy almost always goes after rangd so you can win many battles with loss of only 4 units by just putting 4 joined halfings split and have one very powerful stack.

hydras

hmmm... you guys seem to be underestimating hydras.  ive won many a game with a 20 hydra army w/nothing else in it.
just have a warlock w/a spell power around 10 (which isnt too hard to do) then the enemy stupidly surrounds the hydras, and then bam! the hydras kill everyone and if you are aginst shooters, just lightning bolt them, lol.

For  warlock try 2 get the heroes Kastore ( because he gets alot of spell power ) Arie ( is good 2 ) and try 2 get dragons and armageddon then u will win for sure
For Barbarian try 2 get the heroes Jojosh ( can get alot of attack and spell power ) spell power is rare in the   barbarians heroes Crack Hack ( i find him good thats all ) Thundax ( can get lot of spell power and knowlege and a good change for wisdom )
trolls r great because they can regenrate
For Necromancer uhmm... the best heroes hmmm... Sandro ( becuase he looks cool )
and the bone dragons r easy 2 get and the vampire lords r great
For Knight hmm.. dont like them very much but if u gonna play with them chose the map Good V.S. Evil( but u need 2 win the game very fast becuase in the later game the warlock will be a little annoying and try 2 help your ally's )
For Sorceres hmm.. dont know really good heroes but in the beginning they r good 2 start with because their creatures r very fast
For Wizard that guy with that green head is good and wizard can get a libary and agains slow creatures they can win easy
And sometimes there r dragons like green, red, black dragons guarding something and they r a horde or something try 2 buy genies because they can half a enemt's creature then if u have some genies try 2 put 1 CHAMPION ( or 1 phoenix buts rather expensive ) in your heroe then 1 genie ( or maybe more if u have mass haste ) then fight the dragons if and cast hast on your genie 2 try 2 half the dragons ( u only have 2 use hast or mass haste if they r balck dragons ) ok thats all for now maybe i know something more later
