I believe three towns are a little above the rest, Castle, Rampart and Dungeon. (Tower aswell but too expensive).

Which of these depends on the map. It can be difficult to find one of each resource in the first week, which stops you from building Evil Eye with Dungeon, which could be devastating. Also a gem shortage could stop you from building minotaurs.

Rampart needs a lot of wood for elves, but those elves are really fast, combined with strong dendroids and unicorns are lethal. Castle is the easiest from start, and has all creatures above average.

Necropolis has to weak first units, and no shooter until lvl 5.

Inferno almost the same, and hell hound cost a lot of wood.

Fortress and Strongholds lack of 4th and 5th magic tower makes them a lot weaker, plus monsters under average. The ONLY good thing is the building order, you can quickly get rocs/wyverns which is good for speedy maps.

Tower is, as I already said, too expensive, and takes too long to develope. But a built up tower(with titans) is probably the best town.

Conflux, too good for the price. Too easy to play with, quick phoenix which grows 4 every week and a lot of immunity (i.e. against lightning bolt). Air Element are extremly powerful in the beginning.

The best start heroes would be those with extra 350 gold per day, makes a big diffrence the first days.

My top 3 towns:

1. Stronghold:
Great heroes, easy to build up, very strong in combat, easy to clear the map.

2. Fortress:
Great heroes as well, nice creeping with flies and mighty moos.

3. Castle:
The Mullich lives here, enough said.

---

Worst Towns for me are:

1. Conflux:
I don't know why, I simply play bullsnow anytime I try

2.Tower:
It's all so expensive, the heroes suck

3. Dungeon:
I never get that pillar of eyes week 1.

It's hard to pick one. Other than Fortress, which is just bad. I say that as someone who was an early adopter of Fortress when the game first came out in 1999 simply because it was a totally new faction. I really tried hard to like them but their weak creatures, limited spell selection, and weak bonuses (movement over swamp? +defenses in town?) just didn't cut it. Also, some of their heroes seemed like they were had intentionally bad specialties just to add insult to injury, like one with a navigation specialty and one with Eagle Eye. Eagle Eye as a specialty? Really?

I guess I didn't really get into conflux either since elementals don't have a ton of personality.

Pretty much every other town had some kind of fun personality and enough features to stay competitive, and as someone who played the entire series since the original King's Bounty, I really appreciate personality and humor in the unit animations.

You don't have to pick the eagle eye specialist. Every castle has heroes with completely useless skills.

And most of the might heroes of fortress are really strong.
Their units too, like iE Mighty Gorgons with the strongest special in the game...
